Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia is a disorder characterized by abnormalities of growth. Previous studies of this disorder have identified a significant incidence of associated hearing loss. Hearing loss has been reported to occur in 25 to 30% of affected patients. To date, all reports of associated hearing loss have indicated the presence of a sensorineural component. In this article, we report the case of a child who was diagnosed with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita and who was found to have a significant conductive hearing loss with a Carhart's notch, indicating the likely presence of s

Revision stapedectomy operations performed over a 13-year period (1977 to 1990) for a conductive hearing loss are reviewed in terms of intraoperative findings and hearing results. All operations were performed in a conventional manner without use of laser techniques. A management algorithm based on intraoperative findings is described. Results are compared with previously reported series. The 66 cases include 20 males and 46 females, ranging in age from 8 to 73 years. Mean time between original and revision stapedectomy was 12.5 years. Prostheses encountered at time of revision included wirelo

High frequency conductive hearing loss can result from partial obstruction of the external auditory canal, ear canal "collapse," or partial ossicular discontinuity. This report describes the evaluation and management of an unusual case of partial ossicular discontinuity with resultant high frequency conductive hearing loss.

This paper reviews the empirical evidence implicating conductive hearing impairment as a causal agent in learning disability, language dysfunction, and central auditory problems. From this review one can conclude that there are few, if any, valid data linking conductive hearing impairment to any of these problems. Suggestions for improving research in this area conclude the article.

Bone-conduction measurements are inaccurate and often troubled by masking problems. Determination of the temporal integration of acoustic energy by Brief Tone Audiometry permits an estimate of the cochlear threshold. In 71 patients with middle ear pathology, the conductive impairment was measured using both conventional audiometry and Brief Tone Audiometry. In 85% of the patients, the estimates coincided within 15 dB. Results from pre- and post-operative measurements are given, and it is demonstrated that Brief Tone Audiometry can be used as an alternative to bone-conduction audiometry to dete

BACKGROUND: Bone conduction hearing aids can be worn as noninvasive devices using a clip or soft band that exerts pressure on the skin, or they can be surgically implanted. ADHEAR (MED-EL GmbH, Innsbruck, Austria) is a novel noninvasive bone conduction hearing aid that is attached behind the ear using an adhesive adapter and does not exert pressure on the skin. ADHEAR is indicated for patients with conductive hearing loss and normal inner ear function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the achievable hearing improvement with ADHEAR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve subjects with normal heari

Middle ear vascular anomalies are an uncommon and frequently overlooked cause of conductive hearing loss (CHL). Their clinical presentation can mimic more prevalent conditions, making diagnosis and management challenging. Without appropriate imaging and evaluation, such cases may lead to unnecessary and potentially harmful interventions. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman with chronic right-sided CHL due to a vascular anomaly compressing the ossicles. This case underscores the critical role of high-resolution imaging in diagnosing rare etiologies of CHL and guiding safe, informed manage

INTRODUCTION: Conductive hearing loss (CHL) attenuates the ability to transmit air conducted sounds to the ear. In humans, severe hearing loss is often accompanied by alterations to other neural systems, such as the vestibular system; however, the inter-relations are not well understood. The overall goal of this study was to assess vestibular-related functioning proxies in a rat CHL model.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (N=134, 250g, 2months old) were used in a CHL model which produced a >20dB threshold shift induced by tympanic membrane puncture. Auditory brainstem response (ABRs) recordi

We present the case of a 5 year old female with a unilateral conductive hearing loss which had a relapsing and remitting course over a 3 year period. An initial noncontrast CT temporal bone study was unremarkable and a diagnosis of otitis media was made in the first instance. However, a second CT temporal bone study performed 3 years later demonstrated bilateral demineralisation of the ossicles and abnormal lucency affecting both the otic capsules. A diagnosis of otosyphilis was proposed on the basis of the imaging features and a prior medical history of previously treated congenital syphilis.

OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to investigate whether wideband tympanometry (WBT) can distinguish among various kinds of conductive hearing loss and provide additional information.
METHODS: We recruited normal subjects and patients with conductive hearing loss due to the following reasons: tympanic membrane perforation only, ossicular chain problem only, and one or other of those conditions combined with mastoid problems. Wideband absorbance at ambient pressure, peak pressure, resonance frequency, and averaged tympanogram data were measured by WBT and compared between the normal, tympanic me

INTRODUCTION: It has been demonstrated that long-term Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL) may influence the precise detection of the temporal features of acoustic signals or Auditory Temporal Processing (ATP). It can be argued that ATP may be the underlying component of many central auditory processing capabilities such as speech comprehension or sound localization. Little is known about the consequences of CHL on temporal aspects of central auditory processing.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess auditory temporal processing ability in individuals with chronic CHL.
METHODS: During this a

OBJECTIVES: Tympanic membrane perforations are common, but there have been few studies of the factors determining the extent of the resulting conductive hearing loss. The aims of this study were to determine whether the size of tympanic membrane perforation, pneumatization of middle ear & mastoid cavity, and location of perforation were correlated with air-bone gap (ABG) of patients.
METHODS: Forty-two patients who underwent tympanoplasty type I or myringoplasty were included and preoperative audiometry were analyzed. Digital image processing was applied in computed tomography for the estimat

The Vibrant Soundbridge is the world's most often implanted active middle ear implant or hearing aid. During the last few years, the device indications have expanded from sensorineural hearing loss to conductive and mixed hearing loss. Titanium couplers have led to improved contact of the floating mass transducer with the middle ear structures. The resulting hearing gain is satisfying for most patients, but so far, there is no clear audiologic advantage over conventional hearing aids. Currently, the indications are mainly related to intolerance of conventional hearing aids (eg, chronic otitis

The purpose of this article was to review the effectiveness of wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) and tympanometry in detecting conductive hearing loss (CHL). Eight studies were included that measured CHL through air-and bone-conducted thresholds in at least a portion of their participants. One study included infants, three studies included children, one study included older children and adults, and three studies included adults. WAI identified CHL well in all populations. In infants and children, WAI in several single-frequency bands identified CHL with equal accuracy to measures of middle ea

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to measure quality of life (QOL) and hearing-specific functional status before and after treatment of conductive hearing loss (CHL).
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A prospective, longitudinal, outcomes-based study was performed at an academic medical center.
RESULTS: Mean baseline QOL scores in CHL patients were comparable with those of the general population. Audiometric studies indicated significant improvements in hearing threshold in all treated patients. There was no significant improvement in mean global QOL scores after treatment of CHL, although there was little ro
