Effects of electrical stimulation on the acoustically evoked auditory-nerve response in guinea pigs with a high-frequency hearing loss.

Criteria for cochlear implantation keep expanding and people with substantial residual low-frequency hearing are considered candidates for implantation nowadays. Therefore, electro-acoustical stimulation in the same ear (EAS) is receiving increasing interest. We have investigated the effects of intracochlear electrical stimulation on acoustically evoked auditory-nerve activity, using a forward masking paradigm. The stimulation electrode was placed in the basal turn of the cochlea. Compound action potential (CAP) recordings were performed in guinea pigs with severe high-frequency hearing loss a

High-frequency conductive hearing loss as a diagnostic test for incomplete ossicular discontinuity in non-cholesteatomatous chronic suppurative otitis media.

Chronic suppurative otitis media, with or without cholesteatoma, may lead to erosion of the ossicles and discontinuity of the ossicular chain. In incomplete ossicular discontinuity (IOD), partial erosion of the ossicles occurs, but some sound transmission is noted throughout the ossicular chain. High-frequency conductive hearing loss (HfCHL) has been considered a hallmark of incomplete ossicular discontinuity. This study aims to evaluate the use of HfCHL as a preoperative predictor of IOD in patients with non-cholesteatomatous chronic suppurative otitis media. The HfCHL test was defined as the

Effect of high-frequency hearing loss on compound action potentials recorded from the intracranial portion of the human eighth nerve.

Compound action potentials (CAP) were recorded from the exposed intracranial portion of the eighth nerve to stimulation with click sounds in patients with sensorineural high-frequency hearing loss who underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) operations to treat trigeminal neuralgia (TN). In patients with normal hearing the CAP recorded in that way is characterized by a negative peak, preceded by a small positivity and followed by a positivity and sometimes a second negative peak. In patients with high-frequency hearing loss the CAP also usually had an initial sharp negative peak in response

Revealing the Effects of Tympanic Membrane Implant Mechanical Properties on High-Frequency Hearing Loss After Clinical Myringoplasty: A Finite Element Analysis.

Myringoplasty is most commonly used to treat tympanic membrane (TM) perforation. Clinical data have shown that unexplained high-frequency (above 3 kHz) hearing loss often occurs after myringoplasty. In this paper, a finite element (FE) model of the partial external and middle ear (ME) of the human ear, which considers the actual perforation and TM implants, is developed to reveal the mechanical mechanism of high-frequency hearing loss after implantation of temporalis fascia and cartilage commonly used in myringoplasty. The SFP displacement is proposed to evaluate the myringoplasty effect, whic
