Viral causes of sensorineural hearing loss.

Many viruses, even the common cold, are capable of producing sensorineural hearing loss. Treatment so far available is ineffective in correcting these losses. However, as the technology of vaccination advances, it is hoped that these can be prevented. Poliomyelitis and smallpox have been virtually eliminated from this country. Measles, rubella, and mumps are coming under control. Perhaps in the future we will be able to completely control influenza and the common cold and thus prevent many of the sensorineural hearing losses that we see today.

Symposium on sensorineural hearing loss in children: early detection and intervention. Histopathology of sensorineural hearing loss in children.

It is important to determine clinically the etiology of any sensorineural hearing loss in a child, if this is at all possible. With continued examination of the pathologic changes in the temporal bone, one can correlate the clinical and histopathologic findings. By use of this combined knowledge, one can diagnose and evaluate more thoroughly a child with such a hearing loss and also better counsel the child's parents.

[Inner Ear Hearing Loss Part II: Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, Therapeutic Options].

The great majority of hearing disorders generates from pathologies in the inner ear, mainly the outer hair cells, as mentioned in the first part of this review. Very often, however, hearing loss appears suddenly and even without external causes like noise exposure. This sudden hearing loss is mostly unilateral, recovers very often spontaneously and should be treated, if persisting. Only in this acute stage there are therapeutic options available. If the inner ear hearing loss is chronic there is no curative therapy, an effective management of the hearing disorder is only possible through rehab

Patients with non-idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss show hearing improvement more often than patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: To compare inpatient treated patients with idiopathic (ISSNHL) and non-idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (NISSNHL) regarding frequency, hearing loss, treatment and outcome. METHODS: All 574 inpatient patients (51% male, median age: 60 years) with ISSNHL and NISSNHL, who were treated in federal state Thuringia in 2011 and 2012, were included retrospectively. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: ISSNHL was diagnosed in 490 patients (85%), NISSNHL in 84 patients (15%). 49% of these cases had hearing loss due to acute otitis media, 37

Is pseudoexfoliation associated with sensorineural hearing loss?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the possible relation between pseudoexfoliation (PSX) and sensorineural hearing loss. METHODS: This study was carried out in Afyon Kocatepe University, Afyon, Turkey between July 2002 and June 2005. Sixty-three patients who were found to have ocular PSX on routine biomicroscopic examination, and 38 age-matched control subjects were evaluated for evidence of audiometric abnormality. The sum of pure-tone hearing threshold measured at 250-2000 Hz, 2000-6000 Hz, and 250-6000 Hz in each ear was compared with controls for the same frequencies. RESULTS: The mean age of the p

[Evaluation of sensorineural hearing loss in childhood].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical and audiological characteristics of sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) with pathological changes both in cochlea and retrocochlear in children and evaluate the relationship between SHL and the lesions in the central nervous system (CNS). METHODS: Three hundred and ten cases (500 ears) of SHL accepted between 1998 and 2000 were studied. The age of patients was ranged from 1 month to 6 years old. According to the evaluation of function of CNS by pediatric neurologist, all cases were divided into two groups: SHL with CNS disease and SHL without CNS disease. Some

Congenital and Neonatally Acquired Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Hearing loss is one of the most common congenital diagnoses, recognized in large part by a robust newborn hearing screening program. Ensuring appropriate follow-up of failed newborn hearing screening is crucial to avoid delay in initiation of treatment for hearing loss. The most common etiology for congenital hearing loss is genetic, but some cases can be acquired. Understanding of the etiology aids in counseling for the family and in direction of treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment results in dramatically improved speech and developmental outcomes for affected children. Treatment includi

Wernicke's Encephalopathy Presenting as Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive-type weight loss surgery that can result in nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency. Although Wernicke's encephalopathy is a known complication following bariatric surgery, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss is a rare presenting symptom of this condition. We present a case of a patient two months postoperative following a sleeve gastrectomy whose chief complaint was hearing loss. While initial laboratory evaluation of her complaint showed elevated inflammatory markers, prompting an autoimmune workup, ultimately the diagnosis of W

Improvement in sensorineural hearing loss during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss is known to occur in some pregnant women, but improvement in sensorineural thresholds has not been audiometrically characterized. Here, we describe a patient with a history of Ménière's disease and vestibular migraine who experienced temporary recovery of her hearing during pregnancy. METHODS: Audiograms were obtained from a 31-year-old female over the course of 2 successive pregnancies. RESULTS: Audiograms revealed a substantial improvement in hearing by the third trimester during each pregnancy, with a rapid return to baseline thresholds after delivery. CONCLUSION:

Methadone-induced bilateral severe sensorineural hearing loss.

Methadone, a long-acting opiate agonist, and naltrexone, an opiate receptor antagonist, are both commonly used to treat patients with morphine and heroin addiction. We present a rare case of methadone-induced persistent bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) after chronic naltrexone use and review opioid-induced hearing loss in the literature. Methadone-induced hearing loss has been described previously described in the literature with all reported cases recovering functional hearing. This is the first description of persistent bilateral severe SNHL following methadone ingestion. We propo

Sensorineural hearing loss in pediatric celiac patients.

OBJECTIVE: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory gluten-dependent intestinal disease affecting 0.5-1% of the general population worldwide. CD is underdiagnosed even with sophisticated health care; approximately 10% of people affected by CD are now diagnosed. The recognition of the atypical extra-intestinal manifestations, including neurological disorders increased the diagnosis of CD. At present, no data are available on the presence of sensorineural hearing loss in pediatric CD patients. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and severity of sensorineura

[Sensorineural hearing loss due to neonatal hyperbilirubinemia].

In this article, the sensorineural hearing loss is presented as a possible sequelae of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. In our program of early hipoacusia detection, 241 babies were examined from January 1996 until November 1999; 7 cases had a history of hyperbilirubinemia in the neonatal period and 2 of them were diagnosed of sensorineural hearing loss. We discuss how the bilirubin or any other associated factor might have been the cause and this could explain the selective affectation of some children.

[Sensorineural hearing loss associated to Kawasaki Disease].

OBJECTIVE: Kawasaki disease is a systemic idiopathic self-limited vasculitis of small and medium-sized vessels. Thirteen cases of sensorineural hearing loss during the evolution of this disease have been described in the literature. We describe a case of an infant with Kawasaki disease who developed sensorineural hearing loss during the acute phase. This case report shows a complication of Kawasaki disease, with few citations in literature, enhancing the importance of careful evaluation of these patients. DESCRIPTION: Nineteen-month-old-boy, formerly healthy, with persistent daily fever seven
