IMPORTANCE: Spontaneous adverse reaction reports of sudden hearing loss have been observed, and a population-based cohort study conducted in Israel showed an increase in the incidence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) following vaccination with messenger RNA COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech). However, in this setting, the possibility of confounding remained.
OBJECTIVE: To assess a potential association between COVID-19 vaccinations and SSNHL.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This register-based country-wide retrospective cohort study of 5.5 million Finnish residents wa

OBJECTIVE: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is one of the few emergent otologic conditions. Although more than half of all patients would benefit from timely treatment, recurrence occasionally develops unexpectedly. The aim of our study is to evaluate the recurrence rate after SSNHL, and present the prognosis after first-episode and recurrent SSNHL.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted of the PubMed and Embase electronic databases.
RESULTS: Seven studies with a total of 3781 patients were included, and 96 patients experienced recurrence. The recurrence rate ranged between 1.4%

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric sudden sensorineural hearing loss (pSSNHL) is a rare phenomenon. There is currently no consensus on the role of imaging in the work-up for this patient population. We aim to evaluate the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) studies in determining the etiology of pSSNHL.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary Hospital and Ambulatory Otolaryngology Clinic.
PATIENTS: Patients ≤18 years of age with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and who had either MRI or CT imaging between January 2010 and M

Although sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) affects chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients more frequently than non-CKD patients, few reports have described SSNHL in dialysis patients. We aimed to review the characteristics of SSNHL in chronic dialysis patients and evaluate treatment responses to steroid therapy. We retrospectively reviewed the records of dialysis patients diagnosed with idiopathic SSNHL at Asan Medical Center between January 2000 and December 2014. Pure tone and speech audiometry analyzes were performed before and 2 weeks and 2 months after treatment onset to evaluate o

CONCLUSION: The results suggest that SOD1 rs4998557 could be associated with susceptibility to SSNHL in the Japanese population.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the gene association with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).
METHODS: A two-stage case control study was conducted to explore the relationship of the candidate genes to SSNHL. The 192 gene samples from SSNHL patients registered in the intractable inner ear disease gene bank were enrolled. As the candidate genes, 39 SNPs from 31 genes were selected for the first stage study. The second stage study examined whether the SOD1 gene polymorp

Acute vertigo with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rare clinical emergency. Here, we report the audio-vestibular test profiles of 27 subjects who presented with these symptoms. The vestibular test battery consisted of a three-dimensional video head impulse test (vHIT) of semicircular canal function and recording ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP, cVEMP) to test otolith dysfunction. Unlike vestibular neuritis, where the horizontal and anterior canals with utricular function are more frequently impaired, 74 % of subjects with vertigo and SSNHL demons

Auditory and vestibular function was examined in 29 patients with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss to identify characteristic vestibulocochlear lesion patterns. In 45%, a vestibular lesion was found, of which 53% had a combined impairment of the cochlea and the ipsilateral posterior semicircular canal, possibly reflecting vascular disease in the common cochlear artery.

This case report describes the audiologic and medical diagnostic evaluations, results, and treatment options in a patient with a classic presentation of immune-mediated sensorineural hearing loss, commonly called autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED). It reviews findings of the basic battery, immittance audiometry, transient otoacoustic emissions, and auditory brainstem response measures and medical findings over more than 2 years. AIED generally causes asymmetric bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with atypical configuration. Although hearing loss is generally fluctuant, the overall pattern i

By idiopathic sudden deafness is meant solely sudden sensory loss of hearing, the pathological-anatomical substrate of which is thought to be acute, vascular endolymphatic hydrops of unknown cause. Sudden deafness always affects one ear only, tinnitus and temporary vertigo may be accompanying symptoms. Sudden loss of hearing reflecting an inner ear involvement of general diseases must be distinguished from sudden deafness as defined above, as also from psychogenic deafness, central-neural deafness during the course of multiple sclerosis, sensory hearing loss in Cogan's disease or syphilis. We report 2 cases of Cogan's syndrome. One female patient had a typical interstitial keratitis and bilateral hearing impairment, the other had dramatically progressive deafness, combined with failure of the left vestibule and severe conjunctivitis resistant to treatment and otitis externa. The typical Cogan's syndrome with interstitial keratitis developed only a few weeks later. The disease is caused by an auto-immune response. The hearing impairment is mainly due to endolymphatic hydrops. Corticosteroids are the treatment of choice.

We examined the temporal bone pathologies in 12 ears with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and found that the lesions present in these specimens and in 10 others reported in the literature are similar to lesions occurring in known cases of viral cochleitis. These lesions are unlike those resulting from known vascular causes.

This review shows the importance of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) as a significant cause of hearing loss that often goes under-recognized, especially by primary care physicians. Contrasted with conductive hearing loss, SSNHL involves inner ear damage. This work reviewed the diagnostic methods and treatments of SSNHL in the U.S. and Canada, including treatment options. It is imperative that primary care physicians and providers be able to recognize this condition early so that treatment may be initiated without delay as hearing loss can become permanent if not managed immediately.

The present study describes an unusual case of bilateral sudden hearing loss associated with iron deficiency anemia. Although hematologic disorders such as anemia or leukemia have been reported to be associated with sudden hearing loss, bilateral sudden hearing loss, which was presented as the first manifestation of iron deficiency anemia, has not been reported. A 74-year-old man presented with simultaneous bilateral sudden hearing loss without vertigo. A complete blood count test revealed a hemoglobin level of 6.4 g/dL and a ferritin level of 14.5 mg/mL, indicating iron deficiency anemia. Pos

ERCC1-XPF heterodimer is a 5'-3' structure-specific endonuclease which is essential in multiple DNA repair pathways in mammalian cells. ERCC1-XPF (ERCC1-ERCC4) repairs cisplatin-DNA intrastrand adducts and interstrand crosslinks and its specific inhibition has been shown to enhance cisplatin cytotoxicity in cancer cells. In this study, we describe a high throughput screen (HTS) used to identify small molecules that inhibit the endonuclease activity of ERCC1-XPF. Primary screens identified two compounds that inhibit ERCC1-XPF activity in the nanomolar range. These compounds were validated in se
