HISN3 mediates adaptive response of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to excess nickel.

Investigation of genes for heavy metal [e.g. nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn)] absorption and detoxification in green algae is of great importance because some of the metals have become one of the major contaminants in the aquatic ecosystem. In plants, overload of heavy metals modifies many aspects of biological processes. However, the mechanisms by which heavy metals exert detrimental effects are not fully understood. The present study identified a biological role for HISN3 (the gene coding for phosphoribosylformimino-5-aminoimidazole carboxamide ribonucleotide isomerase) in regulating the response

Heavy metal concentrations in the small intestine of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) with and without Echinococcus multilocularis infection.

Heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) levels in red fox small intestine samples with or without Echinococcus multilocularis infection were studied. The red foxes were taken from the open countryside of northwest Bohemia (CR). Red foxes with E. multilocularis infection had lower levels of toxic metals (Cd, Pb); cadmium levels in infected foxes (0.0052 mg/kg) were twice as low as in uninfected foxes (0.0106 mg/kg). This was the same case for lead: 0.0288 mg/kg infected red foxes (inf.) and 0.0413 mg/kg uninfected (uninf.). Conversely, red foxes with E. multilocularis infection yielded

Pulmonary delivery of nanosized alendronate for decorporation of inhaled heavy metals: formulation development, characterization and gamma scintigraphic evaluation.

CONTEXT: Medical management of heavy metal toxicity including radioactive ones is the cause of concern because of their increased use in energy production, healthcare and mining. As inhalation is one of the primary routes for internalization, a formulation is needed to trap metal(s) at the portal of entry itself. OBJECTIVE: Objective was to formulate and characterize a nanonized dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulation of alendronate sodium as potential inhalable antidote for chelating metal toxicants. METHODS: In vitro binding studies of alendronate with respect to seven non-radioactive heavy m

ALUMINIUM PNEUMOCONIOSIS. I. IN VITRO COMPARISON OF STAMPED ALUMINIUM POWDERS CONTAINING DIFFERENT LUBRICATING AGENTS AND A GRANULAR ALUMINIUM POWDER.

The discrepancy in previous reports of the action of aluminium on the lung may be explained by differences between stamped and granular aluminium powders. A stamped powder of the variety causing pulmonary fibrosis showed a brisk reaction with water, but a granular powder was unreactive. This difference is primarily due to the granular particles being covered by inert aluminium oxide, the formation of which is partially prevented in the stamping process by stearine and mineral oil. The reactivity of the flake-like stamped particles is also dependent on their large surface area per unit volume.

[Change lipid peroxidation as a mechanism of renal disease under heavy metals].

Heavy metals are the most dangerous anthropogenic pollutants human environment. With an extensive range of pathological effects of heavy metals lead to the development of irreversible changes in the tissues of living organisms and systems. The main target organ destructive influence of metals are the kidneys, which is associated with the peculiarities of running these bodies physiological functions. There are many mechanisms allowing heavy metals to exercise their pathogenic effects on the body, the most significant of which is the mechanism of activation of free radical oxidation, due to the

Guillain-Barré-like syndrome in a child with lead poisoning.

Lead poisoning is a medical condition caused by increased levels of the heavy metal lead in the body, generally resulting from environmental exposure. Lead poisoning can cause a variety of symptoms which vary depending on the individual and the duration of lead exposure; lead poisoning is more noxious to children than adults, because it can damage the brain and nerve development of children. We report a case of lead poisoning in a 5-year-old girl caused by accidental ingestion of a metal ring. Simultaneously, the child showed anemia, encephalopathy, and peripheral neuropathy with albuminocytolo

Thallium poisoning from eating contaminated cake--Iraq, 2008.

Thallium is an odorless, tasteless, heavy metal formerly used in rodenticides and still used in some manufacturing processes (e.g., electronics, pharmaceuticals, and glass). Thallium also has been used for intentional poisonings. Acute thallium poisoning produces gastrointestinal symptoms and signs, such as vomiting and acute abdominal pain, in the first few hours after ingestion, and initially is indistinguishable from other causes of acute gastrointestinal toxicity. However, within several days of ingestion, acute thallium poisoning often produces neurologic symptoms, such as extreme pain an

Chronic Manganese Toxicity Associated with Voltage-Gated Potassium Channel Complex Antibodies in a Relapsing Neuropsychiatric Disorder.

Heavy metal poisoning is a rare but important cause of encephalopathy. Manganese (Mn) toxicity is especially rare in the modern world, and clinicians’ lack of recognition of its neuropsychiatric manifestations can lead to misdiagnosis and mismanagement. We describe the case of a man who presented with recurrent episodes of confusion, psychosis, dystonic limb movement and cognitive impairment and was initially diagnosed with anti-voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) complex limbic encephalitis in view of previous positive autoantibodies. His failure to respond to immunotherapy prompted

Heavy metals: toxicity and human health effects.

Heavy metals are naturally occurring components of the Earth's crust and persistent environmental pollutants. Human exposure to heavy metals occurs via various pathways, including inhalation of air/dust particles, ingesting contaminated water or soil, or through the food chain. Their bioaccumulation may lead to diverse toxic effects affecting different body tissues and organ systems. The toxicity of heavy metals depends on the properties of the given metal, dose, route, duration of exposure (acute or chronic), and  extent of bioaccumulation. The detrimental impacts of heavy metals on human hea

A prophylactic multi-strain probiotic treatment to reduce the absorption of toxic elements: In-vitro study and biomonitoring of breast milk and infant stools.

Potential exposure to toxic elements initially occurs during gestation and after birth via breast milk, which is the principal source of nutrients for infants during the first months of life. In this study, we evaluated whether maternal oral supplementation with a multi-strain probiotic product can protect infants from exposure to arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) via breast milk. In-vitro studies of the bacterial strains present in this probiotic product showed a high bacterial tolerance for As, Cd, Hg, and Pb, and good binding capacity for Cd, Hg, and Pb (72%, 81%, and

Adverse effect of heavy metals (As, Pb, Hg, and Cr) on health and their bioremediation strategies: a review.

Currently, heavy metal pollution becomes a severe problem whole over the world, and these toxic metals enter into the environment either by natural phenomena or due to extensive industrialization. The discharged effluents containing toxic heavy metals mixed with soil/water and change their natural composition. These heavy metals have adverse effects on living beings and cause damage to the vital body organs of animals as well as humans. The heavy metal pollution also inhibits the biodegradation of the chlorinated organic compounds (another type of environmental pollution) by interacting with m

A review on simultaneous heavy metal removal and organo-contaminants degradation by potential microbes: Current findings and future outlook.

Industrial processes result in the production of heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceuticals, micropollutants, and PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated substances). Heavy metals are currently a significant problem in drinking water and other natural water bodies, including soil, which has an adverse impact on the environment as a whole. The heavy metal is highly poisonous, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic to humans as well as other animals. Multiple polluted sites, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, have been observed to co-occur with heavy me

Neutralization by metal ions of the toxicity of sodium selenide.

Inert metal-selenide colloids are found in animals. They are believed to afford cross-protection against the toxicities of both metals and selenocompounds. Here, the toxicities of metal salt and sodium selenide mixtures were systematically studied using the death rate of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells as an indicator. In parallel, the abilities of these mixtures to produce colloids were assessed. Studied metal cations could be classified in three groups: (i) metal ions that protect cells against selenium toxicity and form insoluble colloids with selenide (Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Zn²⁺),
