Serum alanine aminotransferase is correlated with hematocrit in healthy human subjects.

BACKGROUND: Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity is a widely-used surrogate marker for liver injury. However, mild elevation of serum ALT is frequently observed in apparently healthy individuals, making it sometimes challenging to interpret whether this laboratory abnormality is medically benign or serious. To obtain a better understanding of the factors influencing ALT levels, we examined the relation between ALT and a number of anthropometric and biochemistry measurements in humans. METHODS: We assessed the associations of ALT with hematocrit (HCT) in 1,200 apparently healthy adult

Hyperoxic ventilation at the critical hematocrit: effects on myocardial perfusion and function.

BACKGROUND: Hemodilution reduces hematocrit (Hct) and blood oxygen content. Tissue oxygenation is mainly preserved by increased cardiac output. As myocardial O2-demands increase, coronary vasodilatation becomes necessary to increase myocardial blood flow. Myocardial ischemia occurs at a critical Hct-value (Hctcrit), with accompanying exhaustion of coronary reserve. Hyperoxic ventilation is known to both reverse peripheral tissue hypoxia at Hctcrit and also to induce coronary vasoconstriction. This study aimed to determine whether hyperoxic ventilation at Hctcrit further exacerbates myocardial

Hematocrit as an indicator of blood volume and a predictor of intradialytic morbid events.

Hematocrit (H) levels can change during hemodialysis, and these changes in H are inversely related to changes in blood volume (BV). The objectives of this study were to determine whether mean arterial pressure (MAP) decreases with decreasing BV and rising H during hemodialysis, and to determine the relationship between dialysis induced intravascular volume depletion and intradialytic morbid events (IME), defined as hypotension, cramping, or lightheadedness that led to dialysis staff intervention. We monitored H continuously using a noninvasive optical technique in 93 hemodialysis sessions in 1

Hematocrit, volume expander, temperature, and shear rate effects on blood viscosity.

UNLABELLED: Our goal was to determine and predict the effects of temperature, shear rate, hematocrit, and different volume expanders on blood viscosity in conditions mimicking deep hypothermia for cardiac operations. Blood was obtained from six healthy adults. Dilutions were prepared to hematocrits of 35%, 30%, 22.5%, and 15% using plasma, 0.9% NaCl, 5% human albumin, and 6% hydroxyethyl starch. Viscosity was measured over a range of shear rates (4.5-450 s(-1)) and temperature (0 degrees -37 degrees C). A parametric expression for predicting blood viscosity based on the study variables was dev

Analytical validation and diagnostic accuracy of a portable hemoglobin/hematocrit meter in cats.

Anemia is a common clinical condition in cats, and accurate measurement of hematocrit (HCT) and hemoglobin (Hb) is essential for diagnosis and monitoring. Conventional laboratory methods are reliable but may not be practical for critically ill patients. Point-of-care (POC) devices offer rapid results using minimal blood volume, however studies evaluating their accuracy in cats remain limited. This prospective study evaluated the analytical and diagnostic performance of the Mission Ultra Hemoglobin/Hematocrit Testing System in 118 client-owned cats. HCT and Hb values obtained with Mission Ultra

Is there a relationship between the hematocrit-to-viscosity ratio and microvascular oxygenation in brain and muscle?

The hematocrit-to-viscosity ratio (HVR) has been widely used has an estimate of red blood cell (RBC) oxygen transport effectiveness into the microvasculature or as an oxygen delivery index. However, no study investigated the possibility of HVR to truly reflect RBC oxygen transport effectiveness or to be an oxygen delivery index. We measured blood viscosity at high shear rate (225 s(-1)), hematocrit, HVR, as well as the microvascular oxyhemoglobin saturation (TOI; tissue oxygen index) by spatial resolved near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) at cerebral and muscle levels in three population known t

Effects of oncotic pressure and hematocrit on outcome after hypothermic circulatory arrest.

BACKGROUND: A recent study found that a higher-perfusate hematocrit was associated with improved neurologic recovery after deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. The current study examined the relative contributions of oxygen delivery and colloid oncotic pressure to this result, as well as the efficacy of different colloidal agents and modified ultrafiltration. METHODS: Twenty-six piglets were randomized into five groups (n = 5 or 6 animals per group): control group 1--blood and crystalloid prime, hematocrit of 20%; group 2--blood and hetastarch prime, hematocrit of 20%; group 3--blood and pent

Prevalence of high hematocrits in patients with interstitial lung disease in Mexico City.

Erythrocytosis, a known response to chronic hypoxemia, is considered infrequent in interstitial lung diseases. We studied the prevalence of high hematocrit (Hct) values and the relationship between Hct and SaO2 in 79 patients with chronic pigeon breeder's lung (PBL) and 34 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), all of whom lived in the Mexico City metropolitan area (2,240 m above sea level). Lung biopsy was performed in 31 patients with IPF and 71 with PBL. We analyzed only one simultaneous measurement of Hct and SaO2 per patient (usually the initial measurement) before treatment. No additi

Effects of cellular morphology on the viscoelastic behavior of high hematocrit RBC suspensions.

Using a constant-amplitude (+/- 1 degree) oscillatory Couette viscometer (f = 0.01-1.0 Hz), we have measured the viscous (eta') and elastic (eta") components of the complex viscosity at 25 degrees C for shape-transformed human RBC suspended in isotonic buffer at 80% hematocrit. Morphology-altering drugs employed were: ECHINOCYTIC AGENT 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP, 0.1-5 mM); STOMATOCYTIC AGENT chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ, 0.01-0.1 mM). All suspensions exhibited decreasing eta' and eta" with increasing frequency. Compared to biconcave, control RBC suspensions, salient effects of shape transfor

Influence of hematocrit-dependent blood viscosity on hemodynamics of mitral paravalvular leak.

PURPOSE: Paravalvular leak (PVL) is a pathological condition that may arise following prosthetic mitral valve implantation and is characterized by regurgitant blood flow through a gap between the prosthetic valve ring and the native cardiac tissue. High-velocity flow jets generated within the leak region may produce elevated shear stresses capable of inducing mechanical damage to erythrocytes and subsequent hemolysis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of blood viscosity, modulated by hematocrit variability, on flow characteristics and hemolytic potential in mitral PVL.

Natural history of postpartum hematocrit recovery in an urban, safety-net population.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum anemia is common after delivery, and postpartum blood transfusion is the leading indicator of severe maternal morbidity in the United States. Although hematologic changes during the antepartum period are well understood, little is known about postpartum hematologic changes. Therefore, we investigated the hematologic changes in the postpartum period in a large, contemporary cohort. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize hematologic recovery in the postpartum period and evaluate the effect of demographics, medical conditions, and pregnancy characteristics on the reco
