Cutaneous extramedullary hematopoiesis has been reported in a small number of patients with myelofibrosis. A 79-year-old male with JAK2V617F-positive myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm, unclassifiable (MDS-MPN-U), presented with multiple skin lesions. The skin lesions were papulonodular, reddish brown, and elastic hard on palpation. Based on a lesion biopsy, cutaneous extramedullary hematopoiesis associated with MDS/MPN-U was diagnosed. He died four months later due to exacerbation of MDS/MPN-U. Cutaneous invasion might be associated with progressive disease and a poor prognosis for M

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) refers to the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) into effector cells that occurs in compartments outside of the bone marrow. Previous studies linked pattern-recognition receptor (PRR)-expressing HSCs, EMH, and immune responses to microbial stimuli. However, whether EMH operates in broader immune contexts remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate a previously unrecognized role for thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) in promoting the population expansion of progenitor cells in the periphery and identify that TSLP-elicited progenitors differentiated

Non-hepatosplenic extramedullary hematopoiesis (NHS-EMH), the formation of blood cellular elements outside the medulla of the bone marrow and outside the liver and spleen, has been noted among patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms and other serious hematological diseases. However, NHS-EMH is rarely identified among individuals without concurrent hematological disease. Since the radiologic features of NHS-EMH are nonspecific, lesions may be mistaken for metastatic disease when observed in patients with known solid tumors. We report an unusual case of a patient with a simultaneous presentat

Many years ago, our research group has demonstrated extramedullary hematopoiesis in the peripheral zone of murine hepatic schistosomal granulomas. In the present study, we revisit this phenomenon using new technical and conceptual approaches. Therefore, newborn mice were percutaneously infected by Schistosoma mansoni cercariae and euthanized between 35- and 60-days post infection. Liver samples were submitted to histopathology and immunohistochemical analyses. Cells under mitosis and/or expressing Ki67 demonstrated the proliferation of hematopoietic cells both around the parasite's eggs trappe

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is often a physiologic response to ineffective marrow production of hematologic cells. While this can be found incidentally in various physiologic and pathophysiologic states, the myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are some of the most common underlying conditions found in patients with EMH. Although this process can assist with hematologic production in defective states, the burden of EMH can lead to symptomatic discomfort and mechanical obstructive complications, most commonly in the spleen and liver. Here we describe the pathophysiology of EMH, treatment

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a rare disease that is characterized by the presence of hemopoietic tissue outside the bone marrow. The masses that form are usually microscopic and asymptomatic, but occasionally lead to tumor-like masses. A 56-year-old male who initially presented to the First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China) with upper abdominal pain and jaundice was found to have paravertebral masses in the thorax. Histopathological examination of a computed tomography-guided needle aspiration biopsy of the masses revealed EMH. The current

Two neonates exhibited the clinical picture of the "blueberry muffin baby" at delivery. The integument manifested petechiae and purpuric magenta-colored macules, papules, and plaques, as well as blueberry-colored ecchymoses. These findings led to the diagnosis of a connatal cytomegalovirus infection and fetal erythroblastosis, respectively. The hemorrhagic-purpuric looking skin lesions reflected extramedullary hematopoiesis with ultrastructural study disclosing evidence of both erythro- and granulopoietic lineage. For the first time, we were able to demonstrate that complexes of red cells in v

Intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare disease in the differential diagnosis of mediastinal masses. It is suggested that asymptomatic masses should not be treated. A correct diagnosis can thus help to avoid an operation. The aim of this case report is to draw attention to this phenomenon as a cause of mediastinal masses and to provide information about diagnostic facilities available. We report the case of a 53-year-old male patient with hereditary spherocytosis as well as the case of a 59-year-old male patient with pyruvate kinase deficiency who showed intrathoracic paravertebra

Myeloproliferative disease may be associated with extramedullary hematopoiesis (EH). Clinically, however, the differential diagnosis of solid masses in these patients includes not only EH but also inflammatory lesions and malignant neoplasms, including granulocytic sarcoma. We report the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of extramedullary hematopoiesis in five patients with a history of myeloproliferative disease. All of the masses developed subsequent to the diagnosis of myeloproliferative disease. Two of the patients had chronic myelogenous leukemia, one had essential thrombocythemia, an

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is observed in people suffering from severe anemia of prolonged duration and appears to be a compensatory mechanism for disturbed medullary hematopoiesis. The hemoglobinopathies (such as thalassemia, spherocytosis, and sickle cell disease), neoplastic diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma, and others, including myelofibrosis and osteitis fibrosa cystica, are associated with EMH. These diseases and their resultant anemia have in common the ability to stimulate erythropoietin production, which in turn may stimulate hematopoiesis in organs of mesenchymal origin

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is the process of blood cell synthesis occurring outside the medulla of the bone marrow. During fetal development, extramedullary hematopoiesis is considered physiological; however, it is considered pathologic when occurring outside the neonatal period. Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) describes a lesion characterized histologically by plump endothelial cells associated with a mixed inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes, plasma cells, mast cells, and eosinophils. This report describes an adolescent boy with an isolated preauricular facial lesion.

Kidney disease in the setting of a hematologic malignancy is common, with the frequency and type of kidney disease varying depending on the specific malignancy. Various glomerular diseases and tumor infiltration of the kidneys have been reported in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders. Descriptions of kidney involvement in myeloproliferative disorders have been much rarer. We report a case of membranous nephropathy accompanied by kidney injury in a patient with primary myelofibrosis with additional features considered related to the patient's myeloproliferative disorder. Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is hematopoiesis in organs outside the bone marrow and most frequently occurs in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. We report a case of perirenal EMH revealed by kidney biopsy in a patient with primary myelofibrosis. We observed only bilateral kidney enlargement with plain computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography before obtaining a renal biopsy. We obtained a percutaneous biopsy from the lower pole of the left kidney using ultrasonographic guidance. Ultrasonography just after the renal biopsy revealed no bleeding around the kidney. However, early the nex

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11-year-old spayed female Siberian Husky was evaluated because of a 2-week history of progressive paraparesis.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Results of neurologic examination were consistent with a T3-L3 myelopathy. There were no abnormalities on CBC, and hypercalcemia was noted on serum biochemical analysis. Several hypoechoic splenic nodules were evident on abdominal ultrasonography, and results of fine-needle aspiration cytology were consistent with splenic extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). Two compressive, extradural masses in the dorsal epidural space of the thoracolumbar reg

The purpose was to analyze the imaging features of thalassemia with extramedullary hematopoiesis in 17 patients. The 17 patients were analyzed and examined retrospectively by X-ray, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Nine cases appeared with hepatic enlargement; 12 cases presented with megalocardia or hypodensity; 15 cases had skeletal manifestations, with involvement of the ribs (66.7%), spine vertebra (40.0%), skull (46.7%), and other bones (20%). Five cases showed nonskeletal manifestations, and extramedullary hematopoiesis was found in three cases. A case
