BACKGROUND: Postoperative scoliosis is often seen after hemipelvectomy for malignancies involving the pelvic area, but the details remain unclear. The objectives were to investigate the development patterns and risk factors of scoliosis after hemipelvectomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients who underwent hemipelvectomy at our hospital between 1998 and 2020. The risk factors of scoliosis with a Cobb angle of ≥10° were investigated.
RESULTS: The postoperative Cobb angle significantly increased in all patients compared with the preoperative one (p < 0.001), and the change ratio

BACKGROUND: Traumatic hemipelvectomies are rare and serious injuries. The surgical management was described in several case studies, with primary amputation often performed to save the patient's life.
METHODS: We report of two survivors with complete traumatic hemipelvectomy resulting in ischemia and paralyzed lower extremity. Due to modern emergency medicine and reconstructive surgery, limb salvage could be attained. Long-term outcome with quality of life was assessed one year after the initial accident.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The patients were able to mobilize themselves and live an inde

The defect created by external hemipelvectomy for bone and soft tissue tumor resection is a challenge to reconstruct because of the exposure of bone, neurovascular structures, and peritoneal contents, particularly in the setting of previous radiotherapy. In a nonsalvageable limb with extensive tumor involvement and radiation damage, a free fillet of leg flap can be used to provide the necessary large volume of tissue for reconstruction without donor site morbidity. Because of the lengthy operative time for the hemipelvectomy procedure, the fillet of leg flap may be subject to long ischemia tim

A 23-year-old Hispanic worker sustained an electrical injury to 45% of his body when a crane hit a power line. Amputations of both legs, with bilateral partial hemipelvectomies, were required. A disarticulation of the right arm at the shoulder was also preformed. Resection of necrotic bowel, debridement of 95% of the abdominal wall, and resection of the genitalia was eventually required, with later reconstruction of the abdominal wall. After wound healing was complete, the patient was fitted with Jobst garments. A customized bucket prosthesis with a temperature control, to allow sitting uprigh

BACKGROUND: Internal hemipelvectomy is a limb-salvage procedure used to treat aggressive pelvic bone tumors. Depending on the extent of pelvic resection, the procedure can substantially alter pelvic stability, muscle attachment sites, and lower-extremity loading during gait. These structural changes are associated with altered movement patterns during walking, which may influence the ability to maintain functional ambulation. Although gait deviations following hemipelvectomy have been reported, the role of trunk motion within these altered gait patterns remains poorly understood.

BACKGROUND: Hemipelvectomy is a complex operation that is usually performed with curative intent. It is rarely performed for palliation in patients with advanced cancer, and its efficacy in achieving palliation is unknown.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of 10 patients with stage IV cancer who underwent palliative hemipelvectomy at a comprehensive cancer center.
RESULTS: Median age of the cohort was 60 years; 7 patients were male. Five patients had previous radiotherapy to the pelvic bone. Hemipelvectomies involved 1 to 2 Enneking-Dunham pelvic zones in 6 patients and 3 to 4 zones in 4 pa

Hydatid disease of the bone is a very rare manifestation of the disease, and is often associated with debilitating symptoms. We present a rare case of skeletal hydatidosis in a 56-year-old man who had been misdiagnosed for many years. Massive involvement of the pelvic bones and soft tissues was evident. An extended hemipelvectomy was performed in order to achieve resection of the affected segments with a clear surgical margin. The patient recovered uneventfully and there are no signs of recurrence of the disease.

BACKGROUND: In patients undergoing hemipelvectomies including resection either of a portion of the pubis or the entire pubis from the symphysis to the lateral margin of the obturator foramen while sparing the hip (so-called Dunham Type III hemipelvectomies), reconstructions typically are not performed given the preserved continuity of the weightbearing axis and the potential complications associated with reconstruction. Allograft reconstruction of the pelvic ring may, however, offer benefits for soft tissue reconstruction of the pelvic floor and hip stability, but little is known about these r

OBJECTIVE: To describe the rate and types of urological intervention during hemipelvectomy, performed for locally advanced cancers of the bony pelvis.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all cases of internal and external hemipelvectomy from January 2011 to July 2020. Data acquisition included primary tumor histology, resection type, neural manipulation or division, primary procedures (at time of hemipelvectomy), secondary (conducted to address urological sequelae after hemipelvectomy), and complications according to the Clavien-Dindo classification system. Pelvic resection type

Hemipelvectomy is a radical surgical procedure reserved for particularly devastating pathology including recalcitrant pelvic osteomyelitis. We describe the incidental diagnosis of a metastatic squamous cell carcinoma by pathology after hemipelvectomy for pelvic osteomyelitis. This tumor was located deep within the chronic wound and deemed to be a Marjolin's ulcer (malignant transformation within a chronic wound). There are multiple reports and case series describing hemipelvectomy for tumor or infection, as well as one case report of a tumor arising years after successful surgical treatment of

Survival following traumatic hemipelvectomy in the child with subsequent local flap coverage of wounds has been previously described. The use of axial skin flaps and thigh and rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flaps for coverage of hemipelvectomy defects following tumor extirpation has also been noted in the literature. The use of muscle flaps to salvage otherwise nonvital bone and to eradicate osteomyelitis with subsequent wound closure has also been thoroughly demonstrated both clinically and experimentally. The use of musculocutaneous flaps to revascularize otherwise nonviable bone of the p

BACKGROUND: Hemipelvectomy is a major orthopedic surgical procedure indicated in specific situations. Although many studies discuss surgical techniques for hemipelvectomy, few studies have presented survival data, especially in underdeveloped countries. Additionally, there is limited information on anesthesia for orthopedic oncologic surgeries. The primary aim of this study was to determine the survival rate after hemipelvectomy, and the secondary aims were to evaluate anesthesia and perioperative care associated with hemipelvectomy and determine the influence of the surgical technique (extern

This case report explores the management of a traumatic hemipelvectomy-a rare and devastating injury characterized by a high mortality rate. The patient, a 12-year-old male, suffered right lower extremity amputation and right hemipelvectomy due to a deglov-ing injury from a non-vehicle-related accident at another institution. Initially, an urgent reconstruction of the right pelvic region and suprapubic tissue defects was performed using a posterior-based fasciocutaneous flap. Following this, the patient was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit at our hospital with a suspected diagn

CASE: A traumatic hemipelvectomy (THP) is a rare life-threatening injury, with limited reports in the civilian population. We present the case of a patient who sustained a massive pelvic injury with an incomplete unilateral THP, a contralateral unstable pelvis, and a fracture of the acetabulum.
CONCLUSION: With advancements in resuscitative techniques, carefully timed and planned surgical interventions, and a coordinated multidisciplinary approach, a greater number of patients may be able to survive a massive pelvic injury.

With the development of 3D printing and surgical techniques, various defect reconstruction methods after tumor resection have been applied not only in humans but also in veterinary medicine. This report describes a case of reconstruction after hemipelvectomy for an osteoma in a cat using a 3D-printed pelvic endoprosthesis and micro total hip replacement (mTHR). A 5-year-old spayed female Turkish Angora cat was referred for a 1-month history of constipation and intermittent weight-bearing lameness in the left hindlimb. An osteoma in the pelvis measuring 4.5 × 3 × 5.4 cm was identified based on

BACKGROUND: The routine iliofemoral approach and its modifications in type II+III resection require extensive skin incision and massive periacetabular muscle detachment, leading to prolonged hospital stay, increased complication incidence, and impaired lower limb function. Under the management of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol, a combined and modified Gibson and ilioinguinal (MGMII) approach was used to avoid unnecessary soft tissue trauma during tumor resection and therefore advantageous to patients' return to normal life.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with type II + III

AIM: There is insufficient evidence to support bony reconstruction of the pubis after a type III internal hemipelvectomy (resection of all or part of the pubis). In this study, we compared surgical complications, postoperative pain, and functional outcome in a series of patients who had undergone a type III internal hemipelvectomy with or without bony reconstruction.
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, 32 patients who had undergone a type III hemipelvectomy with or without allograft reconstruction (n = 15 and n = 17, respectively) were reviewed. The mean follow-up was 6.7 years (SD 3.8)

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-year-old 5.1-kg (11.2-lb) castrated male Siberian cat was examined because of a history of an abnormal right pelvic limb gait and a 4- to 5-month history of progressive constipation. Radiographs obtained by the referring veterinarian showed an osteoproductive and osteolytic bony lesion that involved the right ischium and filled the obturator foramen.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: A hard mass was palpable in the right inguinal area, and rectal examination revealed a smooth bony mass on the ventral aspect of the right pelvic floor with marked reduction in the pelvic canal space. A 3.
