The circulatory and immune systems of mosquitoes are functionally integrated. An infection induces the migration of hemocytes to the dorsal vessel, and specifically, to the regions surrounding the ostia of the heart. These periostial hemocytes phagocytose pathogens in the areas of the hemocoel that experience the highest hemolymph flow. Here, we investigated whether a bacterial infection affects cardiac rhythmicity in the African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae We discovered that infection with Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, but not Micrococcus lute

Deep-sea vesicomyid clams harboring intracellular symbiotic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria are often dominant in chemosynthetic animal communities. Although they are known to have erythrocytes, little is known about other hemocytes. To investigate the types and roles of various hemocytes in vesicomyid clams, we performed morphological, histochemical and functional characterization of the hemocytes in two species, Phreagena okutanii, collected from 873 to 978 m depth, and Abyssogena phaseoliformis, from 5199 to 5355 m. Both were found to have three types of hemocytes: erythrocytes (ERCs), eosinophil

Bivalve hemocytes, particularly granulocytes and hyalinocytes, play a crucial role in cell-mediated immunity. However, their interactions with aged plastic particles, exhibiting altered properties that more closely resemble those in natural environments, remain largely underexplored. This study assesses the differential responses of hemocyte subpopulations (Mytilus edulis) to chemically aged polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic (MPs) and nanoplastic (NPs) particles across multiple cellular effect endpoints. Particle characteristics were analyzed using Single Particle Extinction and Sc

Global loss of honey bee colonies is threatening the human food supply. Diverse pathogens reduce honey bee hardiness needed to sustain colonies, especially in winter. We isolated a free-living Gram negative bacillus from hemolymph of worker honey bees (Apis mellifera) found separated from winter clusters. In some hives, greater than 90% of the dying bees detached from the winter cluster were found to contain this bacterium in their hemolymph. Throughout the year, the same organism was rarely found in bees engaged in normal hive activities, but was detected in about half of Varroa destructor mi

Organophosphorus pesticides like Chlorpyrifos 48%EC were widely used to control agricultural pests. The present study aimed to evaluate the toxic effects of Chlorpyrifos 48%EC on B. alexandrina snails, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. After exposure of snails to serial concentrations to determine the LC50, thirty snails for each sublethal concentration (LC10 2.1 and LC25 5.6 mg/l) in each group were exposed for 24 h followed by another 24 h for recovery. After recovery random samples were collected from hemolymph and tissue to measure the impacts on Phagocytic index, histological,

We measured non-specific immune function of various bivalves from marine (Cyrtodaria siliqua, Mactromeris polynyma, Mesosdesma arctatum, Mya arenaria, Mya truncata, Mytilus edulis, Serripes groenlandicus, Siliqua costata) and freshwater environments (Dreissena polymorpha and Elliptio complanata). We used flow cytometry to quantify the phagocytosis of fluorescent microspheres by hemocytes exposed in vitro to increasing levels of various metal compounds (AgNO(3), CdCl(2), CH(3)HgCl, HgCl(2) and ZnCl(2)). In some species, low doses of mercury (organic and inorganic) and Zn suggest a hormesis-like

Earlier in vivo work by Lie et al. (1977) indicated that the innate resistance of the 10R2 strain of Biomphalaria glabrata to PR1 Schistosoma mansoni could be interfered with if the snails were infected previously with another trematode, Echinostoma paraensei. We have studied this interference phenomenon using in vitro methods in an attempt to understand its mechanistic basis. Hemolymph, derived from 10R2 snails infected with E. paraensei for 14-28 days, killed 25% of S. mansoni sporocysts in vitro, significantly less (P less than 0.001) than the 90% killing rate observed with hemolymph from u

Pollutants via run-off into the ocean represent a potential threat to marine organisms, especially bivalves such as oysters living in coastal environments. These organisms filter large volumes of seawater and may accumulate contaminants within their tissues. Pesticide contamination in water could have a direct or indirect toxic action on tissues or cells and could induce alteration of immune system. Bivalve immunity is mainly supported by hemocytes and participates directly by phagocytosis to eliminate pathogens. Some studies have shown that pesticides can reduce immune defences and/or modify

Microplastics (MPs) in marine environments undergo ubiquitous UV aging, which can substantially alter their physicochemical properties and biological toxicity. However, whether UV aging increases the toxicological risk of different polymer MPs and how cellular immune responses reflect this process remain unclear. In this study, hemocytes of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) were used as an in vitro model to investigate the immunotoxic effects of pristine and UV-aged polypropylene (PP) and polyamide (PA) MPs at the cellular level. The results showed that UV aging markedly aggravated PP-

Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is a widely used flame retardant in numerous commercial and industrial products. Due to its widespread release and detection in various environmental matrices, TCEP has raised great concerns about its risk to aquatic biota and human health. To this end, the present study investigates the TCEP environmental and human health mediated effects on aquatic biological species/models belonging to different trophic levels, as well as on human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Specifically, TCEP ability to promote (a) growth inhibition in algae, like the freshwater spec

Benzene, a ubiquitous environmental chemical, is known to cause immune dysfunction and developmental defects. This study aims to investigate the relation between benzene-induced immune dysfunction and developmental toxicity in a genetically tractable animal model, Drosophila melanogaster. Further, the study explored the protective role of Heat Shock Protein 70 (Hsp70) against benzene-induced immunotoxicity and subsequent developmental impact. Drosophila larvae exposed to benzene (1.0, 10.0, and 100.0 mM) were examined for total hemocyte (immune cells) count, phagocytic activity, oxidative stre

As the most typical example of mRNA variable splicing, Down Syndrome Cell Adhesion Molecule (Dscam) can produce a large number of mRNA isomers. It plays an important role not only in the nervous system, but also in the immune system. In Eriocheir sinensis, the extracellular region of Dscam has three variable domains, which can produce 25, 34 and 18 exons and encode the N-terminal region of immunoglobulin (Ig) 2 and Ig3 domains, and the entire Ig7 domain, respectively. In addition to three variable domains, the extracellular non-variable region of Dscam also includes many Ig domains and fibrone

Larval Galleria mellonella (L.) hemocytes form microaggregates in response to stimulation by Gram-positive bacteria. Hemocyte adhesion to foreign materials is mediated by the cAMP/ protein kinase A pathway and the β-subunit of cholera toxin using a cAMP-independent mechanism. Cholera toxin-induced microaggregation was inhibited by the integrin inhibitory RGDS peptide, implying integrins may be part of the mechanism. Based on the types of mammalian integrin-antibody reactive proteins affecting hemocyte adhesion and bacterial-induced responses α5 , αv , β1 , and β3 subunits occurred on both gran

Mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, malaria, and lymphatic filariasis, exact a devastating toll on global health and economics, killing or debilitating millions every year (54). Mosquito innate immune responses are at the forefront of concerted research efforts aimed at defining potential target genes that could be manipulated to engineer pathogen resistance in vector populations. We aimed to describe the pivotal role that circulating blood cells (called hemocytes) play in immunity by generating a total of 11,952 Aedes aegypti and 12,790 Armigeres subalbatus expressed sequence tag (EST)

This study investigated the toxic effects of Bisphenol A (BPA) on the Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) using in vitro assays with primary cultured hemocytes. The abalone hemocytes were exposed to BPA concentrations up to 100 μM to assess cytotoxicity. Subsequently, hemocytes were exposed to sublethal BPA concentrations (LC20 = 2.3 μM and LC50 = 5.8 μM) for 48 h, and we evaluated the cellular immune responses of hemocytes via flow cytometry. Results showed no significant differences between LC20 and control groups, but LC50 exposure significantly reduced phagocytosis and oxidative capac

Biomphalaria glabrata is one of the snail intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, the causative agent of intestinal schistosomiasis disease. Numerous molecular studies using comparative approaches between susceptible and resistant snails to S. mansoni infection have helped identify numerous snail key candidates supporting such susceptible/resistant status. The functional approach using RNA interference (RNAi) remains crucial to validate the function of such candidates. CRISPR-Cas systems are still under development in many laboratories, and RNA interference remains the best tool to study B.

Digenean trematodes are a large, complex group of parasitic flatworms that infect an incredible diversity of organisms, including humans. Larval development of most digeneans takes place within a snail (Gastropoda). Compatibility between snails and digeneans is often very specific, such that suitable snail hosts define the geographical ranges of diseases caused by these worms. The immune cells (hemocytes) of a snail are sentinels that act as a crucial barrier to infection by larval digeneans. Hemocytes coordinate a robust and specific immunological response, participating directly in parasite

Toxic metals, such as mercury, contribute substantially to anthropogenic pollution in many estuarine environments. Animals living in those environments, particularly invertebrate filter feeders like tunicates, can be used as bioindicators. In an attempt to identify cellular markers for revealing pollution, this study examined in vitro the effects of different concentrations of methyl mercury on Styela plicata hemocytes. The harvested hemocytes from S. plicata that were exposed to the metal had a significant mortality, cellular count and morphometric alterations. These findings provided evidenc

To understand how Toll signaling controls the activation of a cellular immune response in Drosophila blood cells (hemocytes), we carried out a genetic modifier screen, looking for deletions that suppress or enhance the mobilization of sessile hemocytes by the gain-of-function mutation Toll10b (Tl10b). Here we describe the results from chromosome arm 3R, where five regions strongly suppressed this phenotype. We identified the specific genes immune response deficient 1 (ird1), headcase (hdc) and possibly Rab23 as suppressors, and we studied the role of ird1 in more detail. An ird1 null mutant an

Culexpipiens quinquefasciatus (C. quinquefasciatus) is an important vector that can transmit human diseases such as West Nile virus, lymphatic filariasis, Japanese encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis. However, very limited research concerning the humoral and cellular immune defenses of C. quinquefasciatus has been done. Here we present the research on hemocyte identification and plasma including hemocyte prophenoloxidase from C. quinquefasciatus at all developmental stages in order to obtain a complete picture of C. quinquefasciatus innate immunity. We identified hemocytes into four types:
