[Frequency of hemoglobin abnormalities and hemoglobinopathies in Mozambique peoples (comparison between leprosy and non-leprosy subjects].

In 588 bloodsamples of negride natives from Moçambique, preferably Chuabo and Macua, haemoglobin analyses were performed. In 21 cases an increase of Hb A2 was found, indicating the presence of heterozygous beta-thalassaemia, in one case the changes in Hb-analysis were typical for beta-delta-thalassaemia, 18 samples could be shown to contain Hb S, typical for the heterozygous sickle cell trait. Futhermore in 7 cases Hb A2' was found. In two bloodsamples haemoglobin variants were observed, which according to their electrophoretical mobility were assumed to represent Hb D in one case, and Hb G in

A Rare Case of Multiple Bone Infarctions and Abnormal Pulmonary Function Tests in a Patient With Compound Heterozygous Hemoglobin S and Type 2 Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited blood disorders characterized by abnormal hemoglobin production, affecting individuals worldwide with varying prevalence across different populations. Manifestations vary, ranging from severe to mild. SCD is characterized by the presence of hemoglobin S (HbS), which distorts erythrocytes upon deoxygenation, leading to sickling. This results in hemolytic anemia, painful vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), and multiple organ damage, including bones, due to microinfarcts. Sickle cell trait (SCT), or carrier status, is not considered an SCD and often runs

Hemoglobin and mean platelet volume abnormalities in children exposed to heavy metals and metalloids in a pilot biomonitoring study.

Children are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of environmental exposure to heavy metals and metalloids (HM/MTs), which can impact red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between urinary levels of 19 HM/MTs and RBCs and platelet-related hematologic parameters in school-aged children residing in the central western state of Colima, Mexico. A cross-sectional pilot biomonitoring study was conducted, and 91 participants were enrolled. Multiple linear regression models were used to calculate regression coefficients ([Formula: see text]) and 95%

Abnormal expression of inflammatory genes in placentas of women with sickle cell anemia and sickle hemoglobin C disease.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a complex disease that is characterized by the polymerization of deoxyhemoglobin S, altered red blood cell membrane biology, endothelial activation, hemolysis, a procoagulant state, acute and chronic inflammation, and vaso-occlusion. Among the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, oxygen is consumed by fetal growth, and pregnant women with SCD are more frequently exposed to low oxygen levels. This might lead to red blood cells sickling, and, consequently, to vaso-occlusion. The mechanisms by which SCD affects placental physiology are largely unknown, a

Hemoglobin abnormalities. An evaluation on new-born infants and their mothers in a maternity unit close to Brazzaville (P.R. Congo).

In order to evaluate the polymorphism of hemoglobin in a population of Equatorial Africa, we undertook a prospective study of 146 births at a rural maternity hospital close to Brazzaville (P.R. Congo). This showed among the mothers 31 (22%) carriers of the sickle cell trait (AS), six with delta mutation, and two with beta-thalassemia trait. Among the children, 27 (18.5%) had sickle cell trait and one had sickle cell homozygosity. The frequency of the HbF Sardinia trait was 7.5%. This and other studies suggested a dilution gradient from Europe to Africa. Hemoglobin Bart's could be visually dete

Abnormal Liver Function with Low Glycated Hemoglobin: a Case of Hereditary Spherocytosis Concealed by Liver Disease Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spherocytosis (HS), a familial hemolytic disorder caused by red blood cell membrane defects, leads to increased red blood cell destruction. It manifests as jaundice, hemolytic anemia, and splenomegaly. HS patients, due to chronic hemolysis, are prone to developing bile duct or gallbladder stones, and some primarily present with 'cholelithiasis' as their main clinical manifestation. METHODS: We reported a case of a patient who was admitted for biliary colic due to choledocholithiasis and was ultimately diagnosed with HS. We conducted a retrospective analysis of this hosp

Cyanosis, hemolysis, decreased HbA1c and abnormal co-oximetry in a patient with hemoglobin M Saskatoon [HBB:c.190C > T p.His64Tyr].

We describe a first Dutch case of Hb M Saskatoon (HBB:c.190C > T p.His64Tyr) in a 47-year-old female Dutch patient who presented with cyanosis, hemolysis, and abnormal co-oximetry. A mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of 105 fL caused by reticulocytosis (160 × 109/L) and low red blood cell count (3.6 × 1012/L) suggested an increased erythrocyte turnover. An HPLC glyco-globin analysis revealed a decreased HbA1c fraction of 12.3 mmol/mmol, HbA0 of 93.3% and an additional unidentified fraction at 1.2 min. DNA sequencing revealed a missense mutation in the HBB gene, (HBB:c.190C > T p.His64Tyr), known a

Expression Differences of Abnormal Hemoglobin New York in Infants, Children and Adults, and Analysis of Clinical Phenotypes and Genotypes in Combination with Thalassemia.

The study investigated expression differences of Hb New York (HBB:c.341T > A) across infants, children, and adults, and analyzed the clinical phenotypes and genotypes when co‑inherited with thalassemia. We retrospectively reviewed 317 cases of Hb New York carriers, assessing hematological parameters, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and genetic testing results. All samples carried the HBB:c.341T > A mutation, including 266 heterozygotes (192 adults, 74 infants and children) and 51 compound heterozygotes with thalassemia. Adult heterozygotes exhibited normal hematological phenotypes, with Hb New Yor

Evaluation of hemoglobin A1c measurement by Capillarys 2 electrophoresis for detection of abnormal glucose tolerance in African immigrants to the United States.

BACKGROUND: Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is used to monitor long-term glycemic control in individuals with diabetes, guide therapy, predict the risk of microvascular complications, and more recently to diagnose diabetes. An automated liquid-flow capillary electrophoresis method was recently developed to measure HbA1c using the Capillarys 2 Flex Piercing instrument. METHODS: Analytical evaluation was performed at 2 clinical centers. A clinical analysis was conducted in 109 African-born individuals, 24% of whom have variant hemoglobin (HbAS or HbAC). Abnormal glucose tolerance (which includes both di

[Evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of school screening for hereditary hemoglobin abnormalities: prospective study in Bouches-du-Rhône. School screening for hemoglobinopathies].

Screening in schools for heterozygote carriers of haemoglobinopathies traits has been carried out experimentally in southeast France ("Bouches du Rhône", the Marseille region) since 1977. The study compares, in cost-effectiveness terms, the screening strategy now followed with 27 alternative strategies in all the pupils (14-16 years). Although the frequency of heterozygote carriers in this school population as a whole is only 7.9% carriers for beta-thalassaemia gene and 2.5% carriers for HbS, prospective costs per diagnosis still seem reasonable: from 1544 to 4997 French francs (1987) dependin

Abnormal Responses in Cognitive Impulsivity Circuits Are Associated with Glycosylated Hemoglobin Trajectories in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Impaired Metabolic Control.

BACKGROUND: Risky health decisions and impulse control profiles may impact on metabolic control in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). We hypothesize that the neural correlates of cognitive impulsivity and decision-making in T1DM relate to metabolic control trajectories. METHODS: We combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), measures of metabolic trajectories (glycosylated hemoglobin [HbA1c] over multiple time points) and behavioral assessment using a cognitive impulsivity paradigm, the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), in 50 participants (25 T1DM and 25 controls). RESULTS: Behavio

A 42-year-old woman with abnormal uterine bleeding-leiomyoma (AUB-L) reporting a hemoglobin of 1.6 g/dL: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal uterine bleeding, formerly known as menometrorrhagia, is estimated to occur in up to one-third of women, commonly at menarche or perimenopause. Among many other causes, abnormal uterine bleeding is known to be caused by leiomyomas, and is itself a leading cause of severe iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in women. Rarely, abnormal uterine bleeding can lead to critically low hemoglobin values of less than 2 g/dL. We report here a case of a woman with abnormal uterine bleeding caused by leiomyomas presenting with severely low hemoglobin. CASE PRESENTATION: We repor

Abnormally Low Hemoglobin A1c Due to a Heterozygous Alpha-Globin Variant (Hb I; HBA2 c.49A>G, p.Lys17Glu) in a Geriatric Patient.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is central to the screening, diagnosis, and longitudinal management of diabetes mellitus, but numerous physiologic and analytic factors can distort its accuracy. Hemoglobin variants are a well-recognized but frequently underappreciated source of spurious results, and the direction and magnitude of the error are highly method-dependent. We report an asymptomatic 75-year-old woman found to have a profoundly low HbA1c (<3.5%) in the setting of normoglycemia and a normal complete blood count. After exclusion of laboratory error and common confounders, alpha-globin gene seque

Low initial hemoglobin and high-risk additional chromosomal abnormalities predict poor long-term survival in chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia.

Predicting prognosis using baseline clinical and genetic features remains critical in the tyrosine-kinase-inhibitor (TKI) era of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We retrospectively analyzed 944 chronic phase CML (CML-CP) patients treated at a single center in China, aiming to clarify treatment responses, long-term outcomes and baseline prognostic factors in real-world settings. Analyses were performed in available patient subsets depending on endpoint-specific data completeness. The study found that female patients had higher major molecular response (MMR) than males (P = 0.004). Age ≥ 45 years
