Small echogenic foci in the ovaries: correlation with histologic findings.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the histologic correlate of small echogenic foci in the ovary and to assess for any association with endometriosis or endosalpingiosis. METHODS: Women planning to have a normal ovary surgically removed were scanned preoperatively with transvaginal sonography. If echogenic foci were present in either normal ovary on the preoperative scan, the removed ovary was scanned in a saline bath, and the surface was marked with india ink over an echogenic focus. Histologic sections were then obtained at the marked site. RESULTS: Echogenic foci were d

Superficial Siderosis: A Clinical Review.

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system results from subpial hemosiderin deposition due to chronic low-grade bleeding into the subarachnoid space. The confluent and marginal subpial hemosiderin is best appreciated on iron-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging sequences. With widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging, the disorder is increasingly being recognized, including in asymptomatic individuals. Gait ataxia, often with hearing impairment is a common clinical presentation. A clinical history of subarachnoid hemorrhage is generally not present. A macrovascular pathology is ge

Lichen aureus with pseudolymphomatous infiltrate.

Lichen aureus is a variant of pigmented purpuric dermatoses. The usual histopathology of lichen aureus is characterized by a subepidermal dense, band-like lymphocytic infiltrate, extravasated erythrocytes, and hemosiderin deposits. We report three patients with lichen aureus on the extremities with similar clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological findings characterized by a dense band-like relatively deep dermal infiltrate accompanied by extravasation of erythrocytes and hemosiderin deposits occasioning a resemblance to a lymphoproliferative disorder.

Nature of storage iron turnover.

Despite recent advance in the study of the nature of storage iron turnover, a comprehensive analysis remains lacking. This study aimed to clarify the nature of storage iron turnover. Ferritin-hemosiderin iron transformation rate and the standard normal storage iron turnover rate were utilized in this study to describe the mechanism of iron absorption in relation to ferritin and hemosiderin iron turnover. The synchronization of radioiron uptake peaks by bone marrow and liver indicates that the distribution of radioiron is proportional to the pre-existing iron levels in organs at 24 h after radi

Decontamination of winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) following chronic exposure to effluent from a pulp and paper mill.

A study was conducted to determine the influence of decontamination on winter flounder living downstream from a pulp and paper mill. The fish and controls were held 8-26 weeks under contaminant-free conditions in aquaria supplied with ambient sea water. Groups of flounder, for comparison, were also sampled near the paper mill at the time of or following autopsy. No differences were apparent in length/organ-weight relationships between depurated and control groups after 26 weeks at 0-6 degrees C, but condition factor, gonadal and hepatosomatic indices, coincident with elevated levels of detoxif

Neonatal hemochromatosis--report of an autopsy case.

A case of neonatal hemochromatosis in a 3-hour-old male is described. He presented with hypotonia, mild jaundice, and respiratory difficulty immediately after birth. He had no evidence of congenital infection, immune-related hemolysis or exogenous iron uptake. Postmortem examination revealed abnormal facial features. The organs were of normal weight for his age except a small liver and lungs, and a large spleen. The most prominent changes were in the liver and pancreas. The liver was coarsely nodular and fibrotic. The lobular architecture was totally distorted by innumerable multinucleated gia

Immunohistochemical expression of thrombomodulin in vestibular schwannoma.

Many vestibular schwannomas (VS) manifest intratumoral microhemorrhages whose underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Thrombomodulin (TM) is an endothelial anticoagulant cofactor that promotes the thrombin-mediated formation of activated protein C that inhibits thrombus formation. We investigated the existence of TM in VS and its potential role in the development of microhemorrhages. We used immunohistochemical staining to study the expression of TM in tissues derived from 25 patients with VS. Hemosiderin deposition was examined by Berlin blue staining and compared with the expression

Localized MR 1H spectroscopy reveals alterations of susceptibility in bone marrow with hemosiderosis.

A noninvasive investigation of the structure of hemopoietic bone marrow is based on the determination of the magnetic field distribution within small volume elements in vertebral bodies by localized 1H MR spectroscopy. In patients with hematological diseases the status of the bone marrow was found to considerably influence the homogeneity of the magnetic field in trabecular bone in vivo. The line widths of the 1H signals were evaluated in follow-up studies during initial chemotherapy of eight patients with leukemia. Intraindividual comparison revealed significant broadening of the field distri

METABOLISM OF IRON STORES.

Remarkable progress was recently achieved in the studies on molecular regulators of iron metabolism. Among the main regulators, storage iron, iron absorption, erythropoiesis and hepcidin interact in keeping iron homeostasis. Diseases with gene-mutations resulting in iron overload, iron deficiency, and local iron deposition have been introduced in relation to the regulators of storage iron metabolism. On the other hand, the research on storage iron metabolism has not advanced since the pioneering research by Shoden in 1953. However, we recently developed a new method for determining ferritin ir

Black Colouration of the Knee Articular Cartilage after Spontaneously Recurrent Haemarthrosis.

Mild discolouration of the articular cartilage is known to gradually occur during aging. However, pathological tissue pigmentation is occasionally induced under several specific conditions. In the present case, we performed total knee replacement in a patient with recurrent haemarthrosis. However, during the operation, we observed severe black colouration of the knee articular cartilage, due to the deposition of hemosiderin and lipofuscin. To our knowledge, this is the first report of severe cartilage pigmentation, due to hemosiderin and lipofuscin deposition in articular cartilage.

Optic neuropathy in superficial intracranial siderosis.

Superficial intracranial siderosis is a degenerative condition secondary to recurrent occult subarachnoid hemorrhage. Progressive sensorineural deafness, cerebellar ataxia, and pyramidal signs are well-documented clinical manifestations, but optic neuropathy is not a recognized feature. We describe 2 patients with clinical and electrophysiological evidence of optic nerve/chiasm dysfunction and MRI signal abnormalities consistent with hemosiderin staining of the anterior visual pathway. In a third case, neuropathological examination of the optic chiasm showed demyelination attributed to hemosid

Reactive astrocytes contribute to epileptogenesis in patients with cavernous angioma.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with cavernous angioma (CA) often suffer from severe epilepsy, and surgical resection is often performed to attenuate these epileptic seizures. Several studies have suggested that surgical removal of the surrounding hemosiderin-pigmented tissues adjacent to CA achieves better seizure control than restricted lesionectomy. Pathological examination of the resected foci reveals not only hemosiderin pigmentation but also various degrees of inflammatory change, such as hemosiderin-laden macrophages, gliosis and fibrosis. However, there is some controversy regarding the epileptoge

First case of hemochromatosis in a sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps).

A 14-year-old, male sugar glider presented with lethargy, anorexia, diarrhea, and paralysis of the hind limbs, and ultrasonography showed possible liver dysfunction. Some medications were administered, but the animal died 10 months after the first presentation, and a necropsy was performed. Histopathologically, hepatocellular degeneration and necrosis, severe deposition of hemosiderin in Kupffer cells and hepatocytes, bridging fibrosis, and regenerative nodules were observed in the liver. Variably amounts of hemosiderin deposition was observed in the heart, lungs, spleen, and kidney. These fin

Skin erythrodiapedesis during chronic venous disorders.

BACKGROUND: Extravasation of erythrocytes (erythrodiapedesis [ED]) is currently included among causes of skin damage in legs with chronic venous disorders (CVD) and ascribed to venular hypertension. ED is followed by erythrocyte disruption, degradation of hemoglobin, and storing of ferric iron into hemosiderin. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of ED in the skin of legs with different clinical stages of CVD. METHODS: One hundred eighteen skin biopsies from legs with CVD underwent histologic evaluation for ED and hemosiderin deposition (HD). RESULTS: ED was found in only 21

Are there diagnostic histologic features of porphyria cutanea tarda in liver biopsy specimens?

In a blind review of 485 consecutive liver biopsy specimens, 16 from patients with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) and 469 from patients with other diseases, we have evaluated the frequency of the following features: a) needle-shaped cytoplasmic inclusions in liver cells, b) lobular aggregates of histiocytes laden with ceroid and iron, and c) the simultaneous presence of portal inflammation, hemosiderosis and fatty change, in order to ascertain their usefulness in the diagnosis of PCT. Cytoplasmic inclusions and lobular aggregates of macrophages were only found in two specimens, both of them fro

Superficial siderosis: Chronic sequelae following brain hemorrhage.

Superficial siderosis is a rare disease of the central nervous system. It is caused by hemosiderin deposition usually following subarachnoid hemorrhage. We report a 67-year-old man with history of motor vehicle accident in 1974 who presents with tremors, worsening ataxia, and impaired auditory, olfactory, and gustatory sensation. The patient was evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging of the brain that showed areas of superficial low T2 signal throughout the posterior fossa, ventricles, sulci, and cisterns, most conspicuous on the gradient-recalled echo T2* susceptibility-weighted sequence.

Not nanocarbon but dispersant induced abnormality in lysosome in macrophages in vivo.

The properties of nanocarbons change from hydrophobic to hydrophilic as a result of coating them with dispersants, typically phospholipid polyethylene glycols, for biological studies. It has been shown that the dispersants remain attached to the nanocarbons when they are injected in mice and influence the nanocarbons' biodistribution in vivo. We show in this report that the effects of dispersants also appear at the subcellular level in vivo. Carbon nanohorns (CNHs), a type of nanocarbon, were dispersed with ceramide polyethylene glycol (CPEG) and intravenously injected in mice. Histological ob

Superficial siderosis and episodic fourth nerve paresis. Report of a case with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging findings.

We describe a patient with superficial siderosis who had an episodic unilateral fourth nerve paresis. The superficial siderosis was caused by small repeated intraventricular hemorrhages from a periventricular cavernous angioma. T2-weighted magnetic resonance images demonstrated a rim of low signal intensity at the brain surface, characteristic of hemosiderin deposition. These low-signal-intensity deposits included the dorsal brain stem around the anterior medullary velum. We suggest that the hemosiderin deposits affected the proximal portion of the fourth nerve where it contains central myelin
