In 9 dogs with severe hemorrhagic shock, the effect of hemocorrector "Lactoprotein" on the indices of coagulative hemostasis and rheologic blood properties was studied. It was established that in intravenous transfusion of lactoprotein at a dose of 10 ml/kg permitting to lead the animals out from the state of shock, the syndromes of disseminated intravascular coagulation and high viscosity of the blood were cupped off. However, by the end of 48 hours of observation, fibrinogen level in the blood of the animals increased sharply, while antithrombin-III concentration and hematocrit decreased. To

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has presented profound global health challenges. Beyond acute illness, a substantial proportion of individuals experience persistent symptoms including fatigue, brain fog, and post-exertional malaise, collectively known as Long-COVID. Among the complications associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination, hemostatic disorders ranging from mild platelet dysfunction to severe thromboembolic events, and rare but serious coagulation-related adverse effects, such as vaccine-induced immune thromb

The number of cases of placenta accreta spectrum disorder has been increasing with the increase in in vitro fertilization and cesarean deliveries. In addition, placenta accreta spectrum without placenta previa is difficult to diagnose before delivery and sometimes requires a hysterectomy because of heavy bleeding. We have devised a uterus-preserving technique (referred to as the tourniquet, uterine inversion, and placental dissection procedure) for such cases. First, the bleeding is stopped by the tourniquet method, the uterus is relaxed with nitroglycerin, and the uterus is inverted to expose

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Hemostatic disorders in cats, while uncommon, can be life-threatening. In general, they can be diagnosed by utilizing a combination of history, physical examination findings, point-of-care assays and a basic understanding of hemostasis. This review aims to provide a general overview of hemostasis physiology, discuss common hemostatic disorders, diagnosis and interpretation of hemostatic testing, and summarize treatments of hemostatic disorders.
CLINICAL CHALLENGES: The underlying cause of hemostatic disorders can often be diagnosed by a combination of history, physical ex

In addition to hemostasis and thrombosis, blood platelets are involved in various processes such as inflammation, infection, immunobiology, cancer metastasis, wound repair and angiogenesis. Platelets' hemostatic and non-hemostatic functions are mediated by the expression of various membrane receptors and the release of proteins, ions and other mediators. Therefore, specific activities of platelets responsible for the non-hemostatic disease are to be inhibited while leaving the platelet's hemostatic function unaffected. Platelets' anti-aggregatory property has been used as a primary criterion f

Bleeding disorders are broadly classified into primary and secondary hemostatic defects. Primary hemostatic disorders (disorders of platelets and von Willebrand factor) mainly result in mucocutaneous bleeding symptoms such as epistaxis, menorrhagia, petechiae, easy bruising, and bleeding after dental and surgical interventions. Secondary hemostatic disorders (congenital or acquired deficiencies of coagulation factors) typically manifest with delayed, deep bleeding into muscles and joints. This article provides a generalized overview of the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, laboratory a

BACKGROUND: Women with rare bleeding disorders (RBDs), including coagulation factor deficiencies and fibrinolytic disorders, may have a higher risk of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Information on this patient category is lacking in the existing PPH guidelines because data on PPH in patients with RBDs are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of PPH in women with an RBD and evaluate the use of peripartum hemostatic prophylaxis.
METHODS: In the Rare Bleeding Disorders in the Netherlands (RBiN) study, patients with RBDs (n = 263) were included from all 6 Dutch hemophilia treatment center

Critically ill patients with liver cirrhosis exhibit complex alterations in coagulation that should be considered in clinical acute management. As routine laboratory tests (e.g., INR, aPTT, platelet count) cannot always adequately reflect the coagulation status of critically ill patients with liver cirrhosis, functional hemostatic tests, such as viscoelastic tests, should also be used to assess coagulation disorders in these patients. If invasive procedures are planned, hemostatic interventions to prevent bleeding and measures to stabilize coagulation disorders should be considered depending o

This review describes disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) as a syndrome in which hemostatic factors are activated. The syndrome ranges in severity from a decompensated coagulopathy (overt-DIC) to the subclinical compensated activation of hemostatic factors (nonovert DIC). The first part of this review emphasizes two points. First, activation of the hemostatic system is controlled by a vast network of capillaries and venules through anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory regulatory factors that operate from the endothelium (e.g., protein C and thrombomodulin, tissue factor pathway inhibit

BACKGROUND: Patients with mild bleeding disorders are at risk of perioperative bleeding, but screening for these disorders remains challenging.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the prevalence of hemostatic abnormalities in patients with and without reported bleeding symptoms on a preoperative questionnaire, consisting of guideline-proposed questions, and appraised the diagnostic value of several screening modalities for the identification of patients with hemostatic abnormalities.
METHODS: In this observational study, 240 patients with and 95 patients without bleeding symptoms on the preoperat

A family with two complex disorders of hemostasis, von Willebrand disease (vWD) and hypofibrinogenemia was reported. The probands were 21- and 16-year-old full brothers suffering from serious bleeding tendencies from childhood. The elder brother had a subarachnoid hemorrhage at the age of 15. The younger brother had repeated episodes of gastrointestinal bleedings since he was 10 years of age. Coagulation studies revealed that both of them had almost the same hemostatic abnormalities, i.e. severe vWD, 9 to 12% of plasma vWF levels, and mild hypofibrinogenemia, 125 to 130 mg/dl of plasma fibrino

Bleeding disorders are a major group of hematological disorders, which are highly prevalent in the world. Excessive bleeding can result in serious consequences including hypoperfusion and cardiac arrest. The body has its selfmechanism to control excessive bleeding which is termed hemostasis. Hemostasis is achieved in two major steps, the formation of the primary and secondary hemostatic plugs. Endothelium, platelets, and coagulation factors are three components involved in hemostasis. Endothelium and platelets have a major role in forming the primary hemostatic plug. Consequently, the first st

Patients with clinically significant bleeding, but with normal hemostatic investigations are identified as a distinct group known as "bleeding disorders of unknown cause" (BDUC). Though the clinical symptoms often resemble that of mild bleeding disorders (MBDs) with confirmed laboratory diagnosis, these patients have to go through multiple laboratory investigations only to end up in a diagnosis of exclusion i.e. BDUC. There are no standard protocols or general consensus on treatment of these patients, either for a generalized bleeding or prophylaxis prior to surgical procedures; patients are t

PURPOSE: Noonan syndrome (NS) is a congenital disorder characterized by various phenotypic features and congenital anomalies. Bleeding disorders are among the more serious, common, yet poorly defined complications associated with NS. As a means of focusing on these complications, we report three patients with stigmata of NS, each of whom had a combination of different hemostatic disorders, and review the literature on bleeding disorders in NS.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinical course and hemostatic abnormalities in three patients with NS were studied, and a literature review on NS was undert

Patients with hereditary hemostatic disorders, characterized by a tendency to bleeding or thrombosis, constitute a serious challenge in the dental practice. Advances in the medical diagnosis of hemostatic disorders have exposed dental professionals to new patients not amenable to the application of the management protocols associated with other, more well-known, disorders. It is the aim of this paper to review the evidence, to highlight the areas of major concern, and to suggest management regimens for patients with hereditary hemostatic disorders. An extensive review has been made (PubMed, Sc

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) are common in adolescents and young adults. They may be secondary to inherited bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand disease or platelet function disorders. These conditions are often under-recognized, leading to diagnostic delays and inadequate management. Treatments include hormonal and hemostatic options, tailored to the individual patient's needs and underlying hemostatic disorder. A coordinated approach between gynecologists, pediatricians, and hemostasis specialists is crucial to optimize management and improve patients' quality of life. This article e

Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease (VWD), and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) are rare diseases affecting normal hemostasis. Although they differ in their pathogenesis and clinical manifestation, if left undiagnosed and untreated, all these conditions can result in severe long-term consequences and can be potentially life-threatening. This article summarizes a poster series funded by Takeda and presented virtually at the 29th annual congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) in 2021: Data from real-world evidence highlight the importance of joint healt
