New drugs to treat hepatitis C are expected to be approved over the next few years which promise to cure nearly all patients. However, due to issues of expected drug resistance, suboptimal activity against diverse hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes and especially because of their extremely high cost, it is unlikely that these HCV drugs will substantially reduce the world's HCV carrier population of around 170 million in the near future or the estimated global incidence of millions of new HCV infections. For these reasons, there is an urgent need to develop a prophylactic HCV vaccine and also to

Infection with hepatitis viruses can lead to acute hepatitis with the risk of developing liver failure. Chronic viral hepatitis may evolve into liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Thus, prevention of viral hepatitis and its sequels is essential. Vaccination against hepatitis A is successful in almost all individuals. Protective antibodies maintain for at least 20 years. Booster vaccinations are not necessary. Since the introduction of hepatitis A vaccines, the incidence of new HAV-infections has declined significantly. Hepatitis B vaccines are safe and highly effective. Special popul

Hepatitis E is an infectious disease caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV). Hepatitis E is mainly a self-limiting travel-associated disease without chronic evolution. In recent years an increasing number of authochtonous HEV-infections has been described in industrialized countries. HEV-infections frequently take a mild clinical silent course of disease in immunocompetent individuals and thus HEV infection is largely underdiagnosed. Therefore, the anti-HEV-prevalence is much higher than anticipated with 2 - 20% in Western Europe. HEV genotype 3 infections must be considered as zoonotic infecti

Acute infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is often clinically inapparent, but may affect several organ systems in its chronic course. In dermatology, common diseases such as lichen planus, cryoglobulinemic vasculitis and porphyria cutanea tarda have been described in association with HCV infection. A number of other dermatologic disorders, e.g., psoriasis, chronic urticaria, chronic pruritus, pseudo-kaposi sarcoma, necrolytic migratory erythema and Behçet disease, have been associated in case reports with HCV-induced liver disease. In this study we summarize the recent literature reports, p

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the main causative agent of parenterally transmitted non-A, non-B viral hepatitis, Infections with HCV may be associated with disorders of various organs other than the liver, essentially through immunologic mechanisms.
OBJECTIVES: To provide an update on HCV and to review and discuss dermatologic disorders directly or indirectly related to HCV-induced liver disease.
OBSERVATIONS: The main dermatologic disorders in HCV infection include (1) vasculitis (mainly cryoglobulin-associated vasculitis, the cause of which is HCV in most cases, and, possibly, som

BACKGROUND: A novel flavivirus has been described recently and designated hepatitis G virus (HGV). The virus is transmitted by the parenteral route but it is uncertain whether it is associated with chronic liver disease because liver biopsy is difficult to justify in this group.
AIMS: To examine histological features of liver biopsy in patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) according to the presence or absence of HCV and HGV RNA.
METHODS: One hundred and thirty one consecutive HCV carriers undergoing staging liver biopsy were studied retrospectively. In each, HCV RNA and HGV RNA were

INTRODUCTION: Bullous pemphigoid is a type of acute or chronic autoimmune disease that involves subepidermal skin lesions with bulla formation. Although viral infections, such as, human herpes virus (HHV), human immunodeficiency virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, HHV-6, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV), are known factors of bullous pemphigoid, HCV infection has only been rarely associated factor, especially in HBV endemic area. A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to erythematous bulla of onset 3 months before presentation affecting his entire body. P

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic inflammatory immune-mediated hepatic pathology of unclear etiology. The mechanisms initiating and driving autoimmune inflammation of the liver and the loss of hepatic tolerance are still elusive. Several studies have documented the involvement of genetic factors and triggering agents such as toxic injury, treatment with immune-modifying drugs, or previous viral infections with perhaps strongest evidence for the hepatitis C virus. Rarely, AIH has been reported to develop after hepatitis A virus infection. We describe a case of de novo AIH in a patient wit

Serial serum samples from 16 Italian patients presenting with acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections (which progressed to chronic hepatitis in six) were screened for the non-organ-specific autoantibodies most frequently associated with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), as well as for antibodies against the hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGP-R) and against the GOR peptide. One patient had low titres (1:10-1:80) of liver-kidney microsomal (LKM-1) antibodies during the recovery phase and three others had transient low titres of anti-smooth muscle (IgM class, 1:10) or anti-ASGP-R (1:150-1:300).

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis B virus recurrence after liver transplant remains a clinically relevant issue, but the optimal duration and safety of hepatitis B immunoglobulin therapy, particularly its discontinuation, remain unclear. Here, we evaluated the incidence and risk factors of posttransplant hepatitis B virus recurrence and assessed outcomes following elective discontinuation of hepatitis B immunoglobulin in a real-world cohort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center cohort study of consecutive adult patients who underwent liver transplant for hepatitis B virus-rel

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an important public health problem. HEV infection has been identified as a major cause of enterically transmitted acute sporadic hepatitis in India especially in adult age group. India is hyperendemic for HEV, with the disease presenting both as outbreaks and as cases of acute sporadic viral hepatitis. Most of these outbreaks can be traced to contamination of drinking water supplies with human fecal matter. The last decade has witnessed tremendous change in our understanding of the virus in its epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic approaches, treatme

BACKGROUND: Autochthonous hepatitis E is increasingly recognized as zoonotic infection in western countries. Serological assays have varying sensitivity and specificity.
METHODS: We implemented molecular testing to identify and characterize acute hepatitis E acquired in Switzerland.
RESULTS: Ninety-three cases of mostly symptomatic acute hepatitis E acquired in Switzerland were documented by PCR between November 2011 and December 2016. Median HEV RNA was 7.5 x 104 IU/mL (range, 5.3 to 4.7 x 107 IU/mL). HEV genotyping was successful in 78 patients, revealing genotype 3 in 75 and genotype 4 in

We report the case of a 68-year-old male HVC+ diagnosed as cholestatic hepatitis induced by glybenclamide, following a non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus treatment. When the drug was discontinued normal analytic parameters were obtained. However, HVC may induce more cholestatic and cytolysic changes on the hepatitis due to glybenclamide. When reviewing the literature only one similar case has been previously reported, although several disturbances in liver function tests have been described in other reports. Routine biochemical tests including liver function are indicated in patients rece

Fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis (FCH) is a fatal disorder that presents as a progressive deterioration of liver function over a period of several weeks to several months. It is caused by the direct cytotoxic effect of the over-expression of viral antigens on hepatocytes in immunosuppressed patients. Our patient was a 59-year-old man with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection of genotype 2a who had suffered from end-stage renal disease due to diabetic nephropathy and underwent kidney transplantation. His serum total bilirubin levels gradually increased to 20 mg/dl and liver atrophy progressed durin

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that 27% of Dutch blood donors have evidence of past infection with HEV. However, the low number of diagnosed HEV infections indicates either an asymptomatic course or under diagnosis.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether HEV is a cause of acute hepatitis in Dutch patients and which diagnostic modality (serology or PCR) should be used for optimal detection.
STUDY DESIGN: Serum samples were retrospectively selected from non-severely immuno-compromised patients from a university hospital population, suspected of having an infectious hepatitis. Criteria were:

BACKGROUND: A nosocomial outbreak of fulminant hepatitis B occurred in five patients in Haifa, Israel. Previous investigations identified the suspected source as a carrier of hepatitis B surface antigen who was positive for antibodies to hepatitis B e antigen and had chronic liver disease. We examined the strain of hepatitis B virus (HBV) that caused this epidemic, in order to identify specific mutations in the precore or core region.
METHODS: The presence of HBV was identified by polymerase-chain-reaction amplification of viral DNA in serum from the source patient, the five patients with ful
