Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the predominant liver cancer type in Southeast Asia. Approximately 350 million individuals suffer from persistent hepatitis B infection worldwide. HBV promotes HCC development through direct and indirect mechanisms. HBV DNA integrates into the host genome during the initial stages of tumorigenesis, causing insertional mutagenesis of cancer-related genes and genomic instability. Extrachromosomal circular DNA (ecDNA) is formed, which is efficiently amplified in large quantities to express viral genes and

The adaptive immune response, particularly the virus-specific CD8(+) T-cell response, is largely responsible for viral clearance and disease pathogenesis during hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The HBV-specific CD8(+) T-cell response is vigorous, polyclonal and multispecific in acutely infected patients who successfully clear the virus and relatively weak and narrowly focused in chronically infected patients. The immunological basis for this dichotomy is unclear. A recent study using HBV transgenic mice and HBV-specific T-cell receptor transgenic mice suggests that intrahepatic antigen prese

The adaptive immune response is thought to be responsible for viral clearance and disease pathogenesis during hepatitis B virus infection. It is generally acknowledged that the humoral antibody response contributes to the clearance of circulating virus particles and the prevention of viral spread within the host while the cellular immune response eliminates infected cells. The T cell response to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) is vigorous, polyclonal and multispecific in acutely infected patients who successfully clear the virus and relatively weak and narrowly focussed in chronically infected pat

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects more than 300 million people worldwide and is a common cause of liver disease and liver cancer. HBV, a member of the Hepadnaviridae family, is a small DNA virus with unusual features similar to retroviruses. HBV replicates through an RNA intermediate and can integrate into the host genome. The unique features of the HBV replication cycle confer a distinct ability of the virus to persist in infected cells. Virological and serological assays have been developed for diagnosis of various forms of HBV-associated disease and for treatment of chronic hepatitis B infect

Chromosomal analysis has been carried out in 4 patients with the symptoms of hepatic coma. An analysis included lymphocytes cultured from peripheral blood. Chromosomal disorders have been assessed with two techniques: structural chromosomal aberrations test, and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) test. It has been shown that the extend of chromosomal damage in the form of the gaps, breaks, acentric chromosomes as well as the presence of ring and dicentric chromosomes, and micronuclear cells have been higher in the examined patients. Such changes may evidence DNA repair disorders, and the presence

A variety of extrahepatic abnormalities have been described in patients with hepatitis B viral infection, including the prodromal arthritis (serum sickness-like) syndrome, polyarteritis nodosa, and glomerulonephropathy. Five patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated membranous glomerulonephropathy (MGN) were persistent carriers of HBsAg. The deposition of HBsAg in the renal lesions of these patients was proved by using monospecific antibody and immunofluorescence technique. These findings support the hypothesis of an etiological correlation of hepatitis B viral infection with some cases

Subclinical and clinical cases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in hospital personnel were recorded over a five-year period. Although our data indicate the existence of "high-risk areas" like laboratories, dialysis units or surgical wards, it was found that 50% of all HBV infections were observed outside these areas. During the same period, most of our inpatients were monitored for HBs-antigenemia. It could be demonstrated that more than 50% of all cases of HBs-antigenemia were not known before and were treated primarily for other reasons than for hepatitis B. As a consequence from our dat

The incidence of persistent hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigenaemia was studied in 114 nephrotic children with glomerulonephritis. Twenty five (24 boys) of 28 cases of membranous glomerulonephritis were HBs antigen (HBsAg) carriers. Only 9 of the remaining 86 patients with nephropathies other than membranous glomerulonephritis were HBsAg positive. HBsAg immune complexes were seen in the sera by electron microscopy. On radioimmunoassay both HBsAg and antibody (anti-HBs), and HBeAg and antibody (anti-HBe) were often detected concurrently, HBsAg was not shown in the glomerular capillary wall. HBs

During the 2-year period (1971-72), 71 patients with virus B hepatitis were studied in Greater Glasgow. In this region, virus B hepatitis is most prevalent in adult males. With the introduction of routine screening of the blood donor population for HB Ag, there has been a significant reduction (p less than 0.02) in post-transfusion hepatitis. Seventy per cent of the patients in 1972 had no obvious history of exposure to HB Ag. Twenty seven per cent of the patients in this series had severe hepatitis. For clarification of our understanding of the natural history of virus B hepatitis in Greater

OBJECTIVE: To examine the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in parotid tissues from patients with positive serum HBV markers.
METHODS: HBsAg and HBcAg were examined in parotid biopsy tissues from patients with suspected parotid tumor and positive serum HBV markers by immunocytochemistry, and HBV DNA was detected in parotid tissues by PCR.
RESULTS: Among the 22 patients with a parotid tumor, only one was pathologically confirmed as a neoplasm; all others were benign. HBsAg and HBcAg were present in parotid cells

We describe a hepatitis B virus carrier who satisfied the criteria of autoimmune hepatitis proposed by the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group. A 43-year-old Japanese female showed human leukocyte antigen typing including DR4 in addition to hypergammaglobulinemia, presence of autoantibodies, and liver histology suggestive of autoimmune hepatitis. Moreover, the predominant presence of hepatitis B core antigen in nuclei rather than in cytoplasm of hepatocytes suggested less of a possibility of liver cell damage related to hepatitis B virus infection. She completely responded to immunosuppre

BACKGROUND: Occult hepatitis B virus infection is defined as detectable HBV-DNA in liver of HBsAg-negative individuals, with or without detectable serum HBV-DNA. In deceased liver donors, results of tissue analysis cannot be obtained prior to allocation for liver transplantation.
AIMS: we investigated prevalence and predictability of occult hepatitis B using blood markers of viral exposure/infection in deceased liver donors.
METHODS: In 50 consecutive HBsAg-negative/anti-HBc-positive and 20 age-matched HBsAg-negative/anti-HBc-negative donors, a nested-PCR assay was employed in liver biopsies

The susceptibility of duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) to the virucidal effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) was compared to hepatitis B virus (HBV) with the aim of using the duck as a model for studying HBV disinfection. Using viral DNA polymerase (DNAP) as a target, inhibition of DNAP activity by chlorine disinfectants was found to be concentration-dependent but independent of contact time. Two minute exposure of minimal effective concentrations of sodium hypochlorite (domestic bleach: 3600 ppm and industrial bleach: 3180 ppm) and sodium dichloroisocyan

A clearer view of the natural history of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has permitted recognition of a phase of viral replication associated with progressive liver damage, and one of absent replication when the disease is inactive and when continued presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs) is due to the integration of viral genes with the host genome. These two phases can be identified by HBe antigenaemia and anti-HBe, respectively. Several active antiviral drugs are available and may significantly benefit certain HBe Ag-positive groups. The antiviral activity of vidarabine and

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in the natural history of chronic HBV infection have not been rationally evaluated. This study aimed to re-characterize quantitative HBsAg and HBV DNA in the natural history phases.
METHODS: A total of 595 and 651 hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive patients and 485 and 705 HBeAg-negative patients were assigned to the early and late cohorts, respectively. Based on the 'S-shape' receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, the HBeAg-positive sub-cohorts with possibly high HBV replication (PHVR) an
