Remediation capacities of two freshwater microalgae, Scenedesmus obliquus and Scenedesmus quadricauda, were assessed for the removal of two fungicides (dimethomorph and pyrimethanil) and one herbicide (isoproturon) from their medium. Glyphosate surfactant herbicide (GlySH) toxicity is an uncommon poisoning. We report two fatalities involving suicidal ingestion of this herbicide. Both deaths occurred despite early recognition of the serious nature of the poisoning and aggressive treatment. The deaths in this series are analysed in the context of a review of existing literature. Canadian farmers are using increasing amounts of herbicides. Often they do not use adequate skin protection. Two cases of severe allergic contact dermatitis due to the herbicide barban are described. Patch testing with various substances, including barban, confirmed the diagnosis. Sensitization studies in guinea pigs and in one of the authors showed that barban is a potent sensitizer. It is recommended that if skin contact with barban occurs the skin be washed immediately with soap and water.

This study presents a new group of herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) based on a cation occurs commonly in nature-acetylcholine. OBJECTIVES: In order to expand our knowledge on the possible long-term health effects of exposure to herbicides, we updated the follow-up of a cohort of 1341 licensed herbicide applicators in the Netherlands. The earlier report indicated that there might be an increased risk for multiple myeloma in this group. Although that finding was statistically significant, the result was based on a small number of cases.
METHODS: We expanded the follow-up from 1 January 1988 to 1 January 2001, which added 13 years to the follow-up. We now report on the causes of death of 196 exposed workers.

The 23 quaternary and tertiary protoberberines related to berberine were tested for in vitro and/or in vivo fungicidal and herbicidal activities. Among the compounds tested, there was some activity observed with some of only the protoberberinium salts, but not sufficiently strong or broad spectrum for agrochemical use. From the structure-activity point of view, some features can be pointed out.
