An unusual traumatic ventral hernia is reported, observed 6 months after its presumed cause. The delay in diagnosis, the benign appearance of the abdomen in the supine position, and the necessity for marlex mesh prosthetic repair in a large traumatic defect are all unusual features. Following repair the patient has remained asymptomatic.

INTRODUCTION: Hernias are a common presenting complaint in the emergency department. If they are not promptly identified and reduced, patients may need urgent surgery, which entails an increase in morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis and reduction of hernias can be challenging due to a patient's large body habitus. In this case, we demonstrate the utility of using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to detect an abdominal wall defect and provide real-time guidance to reduce a hernia and avoid surgery in a patient who was a poor surgical candidate.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative optimization is widely recommended for patients undergoing ventral hernia repair. However, the clinical impact of individual risk factors remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the association of obesity, diabetes mellitus, and smoking with postoperative outcomes and to compare these findings with surgeon practices and existing literature.
METHODS: The augmented evidence review (AER) was performed using 3 evidence streams to answer the unified question: "What are the key components of preoperative patient optimization for ventral hernia repair?" Empiric evide

PURPOSE: Obesity increases the risk of complications and technical difficulty in ventral hernia repair. Preoperative weight loss is recommended to mitigate these risks, but the implementation of different strategies in routine practice remains poorly described. This study aimed to characterize the use of dietary counseling, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery within a structured optimization pathway and provide preliminary insights into surgical outcomes in obese versus non-obese patients.
METHODS: In this retrospective, single-center study, obese patients with ventral hernia were managed

BACKGROUND: Both umbilical and epigastric hernias may be associated with rectus muscle divarication. In such cases, isolated repair of combined hernia defects can have high recurrence rates and poorer cosmetic outcomes, thus the repair of both pathologies ought to be favored. The goal of the study below is to provide detailed technical aspects of the endoscopic retro-rectus mesh repair.
METHODS: We chose a group of 16 patients who underwent the repair of ventral hernias associated with both primary and incisional rectus diastasis, using the extended-view of a totally extraperitoneal Rives-Sto

PURPOSE: Published results from mesh placement in the preperitoneal space between the posterior fascia and peritoneum for ventral hernia repair are limited. We describe our initial experience regarding the feasibility of a robotic-assisted transabdominal preperitoneal (rTAPP) ventral hernia repair.
METHODS: The study is a retrospective review and descriptive analysis of consecutive and prospectively collected data regarding rTAPP ventral hernia repair conducted by a single surgeon between 2014 and 2016.
RESULTS: Fifty-four consecutive rTAPP ventral hernia repairs were performed, and all but

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Incisional ventral hernias, a form of acquired hernia, are a common complication of abdominal surgery, with a documented incidence of up to 20 %. Retroperitoneal organs tend to be less associated with ventral hernias, and, to our knowledge, there is only one other report of an incisional hernia containing a kidney. In this case report, we document an extremely rare incidence of a male who developed a giant incisional hernia post-exploratory laparotomy and was found to have his right kidney present within the hernia sac.

INTRODUCTION: Preoperative application of botulinum toxin type A has demonstrated to be safe and effective in the closure of complex ventral hernias in adults. However, its use in pediatrics has been little documented.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 22-month-old girl with a complex abdominal wall ventral hernia secondary to multiple neonatal laparotomies. In a first procedure, botulinum toxin was administered using an intramuscular approach at six sites of the muscle layers surrounding the defect, under general anesthesia and ultrasound control. 4 weeks later, an open hernia repair was

BACKGROUND: Ventral hernia repair (VHR) is a frequent problem in the expanding aging population. However, advanced age is often viewed as a contraindication to elective hernia surgery. We aimed to analyze outcomes of VHR in a large cohort of elderly patients. We hypothesized that elective VHR is safe and effective even in patients over 70 years old.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of consecutive patients over the age of 70 who underwent VHR at a at a tertiary care hospital. Main outcome measures included postoperative complications and recurrence rate.
RESULTS: Between 2006 and

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the retrorectus mesh repair for midline ventral hernias.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all consecutive patients having a retrorectus mesh repair by a single surgeon in a standardized fashion from 1991 to 2005. All procedures used polyester (Mersilene) mesh with at least 5-cm overlap beyond the repair in all directions.
RESULTS: Ninety patients were identified, 56% of which were female. Major postoperative complications occurred in 23 (26%) patients, including nine (10%) patients requiring reoperative treatment due to skin flap necrosis, wound in

INTRODUCTION: The ideal prosthetic material for ventral hernia repair has yet to be described. Each prosthetic material has unique advantages and disadvantages in terms of tissue ingrowth, adhesion formation, and shrinkage profiles. Polyester-based mesh has shown minimal shrinkage and excellent tissue ingrowth in animal models. However, the macroporous, braided nature of this material has raised several concerns regarding the incidence of infections, fistulas, and bowel obstructions. We have reviewed our experience with polyester-based mesh for the repair of ventral hernias.
METHODS: All pati

STUDY AIM: There is a gap in evidence that demonstrates an increased risk of hernia formation in laborers. A notable incidence of a second asymptomatic hernia among people making a workers' compensation claim for a hernia would suggest that the pathology is not acute and probably not related to work, or the performance of a single strenuous event.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective database study of a consecutive sample of 106 adults who claimed a work-related abdominal hernia between September 2016 and December 2018 and had a Computed Tomography (CT) scan as part of a diagnos

BACKGROUND: Various surgical procedures have been described in the treatment of small ventral abdominal wall hernias. Mesh repair is becoming popular because of a low recurrence rate.
AIM: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate an open intraperitoneal technique using the Bard Ventralex hernia patch in the treatment of small midline ventral hernias.
METHODS: 101 patients were operated on (59 male, 42 female) with a mean age of 54.5 years (range 17-85). Mean operative time was 33 min (range 16-65). The median hospital stay was 2 days (range 1-15).
RESULTS: Two patients had a hemato

The authors were studying syntopy of the abdominal organs in children with ventral hernias appearing after healing a great hernia of the umbilical cord in the neonatal period. Certain regular disturbances of the anatomical and functional state of the abdominal organs were detected. These data gave grounds for a new correcting operation allowing normal syntopy of the organs to be restored and their function to be improved. The operation was introduced into practice of the Surgical Clinic of the Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute in 1975.

PURPOSE: Evidence is compelling for the safety and acceptable short-term outcomes of concomitant bariatric surgery (BS) and laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (LVHR). No studies have examined patient characteristics that may guide selection between concomitant LVHR and staged operations in patients undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y (LRNY) or sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with concomitant LRNY or LSG and LVHR from 2013–2015. The association of demographics, comorbidities, hernia characteristics, repair technique, and post-operative weight regain was ass
