A study of the clinical activity of a gel combining monocaprin and doxycycline: a novel treatment for herpes labialis.

BACKGROUND: Current treatment of herpes labialis is usually with topical antiviral drugs and early drug administration is required for effectiveness. Monocaprin, a 1-monoglyceride of capric acid, has high microbicidal activity in vitro and efficiently inactivates herpes simplex virus. Tetracyclines are inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases that are part of the inflammatory response and contribute to the breakdown of tissue in ulcers. The study objective was to investigate the antiviral and wound-healing effect of a hydrogel containing either monocaprin or a combination of monocaprin and a lo

In Vivo Activity of Antimicrobial Peptoid Oligomers against HSV-1 in a Mouse Model of Herpes Labialis.

Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) infections cause recurrent oral lesions and are the primary cause of infectious blindness and genital lesions in developed countries. HSV-1 can also lead to life-threatening infections in immunocompromised individuals. Currently, the primary class of antiviral therapeutics for HSV-1 treatment are nucleoside analogues such as acyclovir. However, these therapeutics are only partially effective and are subject to development of resistance. Thus, the development of new, effective antiviral agents, which can be used topically to inactivate HSV-1, is a necessity.

Diet in Dermatology: Review of Diet's Influence on the Conditions of Rosacea, Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Herpes Labialis, and Vitiligo.

The influence of dietary patterns on cutaneous disease has been an oft-posed question to dermatologists by patients in a clinical setting. Similarly, the popularity of nutritional supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and nutraceutical blends has been increasing. Dermatologists, primary care physicians, and other providers should be familiar with dietary interventions that are evidence-based and those that are more marketable than efficacious. In this review, the modification of diet, including dietary exclusion and dietary supplementation for the treatment of rosacea, hidradenitis suppurat

Allergic contact cheilitis from a lipstick misdiagnosed as herpes labialis: Subsequent worsening due to Zovirax contact allergy.

A 29-year-old Turkish woman with allergic contact cheilitis from a lipstick was misdiagnosed as herpes labialis and subsequently worsened with the application of Zovirax cream. Patch tests were positive to Zovirax cream, propylene glycol, the patient's favourite lipstick and propyl gallate. No reaction was seen with Zovirax ophthalmic ointment and Zovirax tablet. The propylene glycol component of the Zovirax cream and the propyl gallate component of the lipstick were regarded as the responsible contact sensitizers. The differential diagnosis was challenging due to concomitant contact sensitiza

Herpes Labialis, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, and Cytomegalovirus Infections and Risk of Dementia: The Framingham Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: An association between chronic infectious diseases and development of dementia has been suspected for decades, based on the finding of pathogens in postmortem brain tissue and on serological evidence. However, questions remain regarding confounders, reverse causality, and how accurate, reproducible and generalizable those findings are. OBJECTIVE: Investigate whether exposure to Herpes simplex (manifested as herpes labialis), Chlamydophila pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae), Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) modifies the risk of dementia in a populational cohort.

Herpes simplex labialis after epidural or parenteral morphine: a randomized prospective trial in an Australian obstetric population.

A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted in women undergoing emergency and elective caesarean section to determine whether epidural morphine predisposes to postoperative herpes simplex labialis and whether the risk is increased or decreased by previous oral herpes or pruritus. Following cannulation of the epidural space, analgesia for labour and/or caesarean section was induced in two groups of similar age, parity, preoperative status and anaesthetic. According to tables of random numbers, 386 were allocated to receive parenteral morphine and 425 to receive epidural morphine. Po

Chronic recurrent urticaria in a patient with recurrent herpes labialis: complete remission after administration of aciclovir and antihistamines.

Chronic recurrent urticaria, occurring in the context of infections, represents a major challenge for clinicians. Chronic genital herpes infection has been perceived in the literature as a possible trigger of chronic recurrent urticaria. The administration of a systemic corticosteroid regimen in these cases has no long-lasting effect and the subsequent relapses are difficult to control. In these cases, treatment of the urticaria with antihistamine (as monomedication) is often not sufficient and does not suppress the symptomatology. The administration of acyclovir or valacyclovir according to a
