Extensive fragmentation of the X chromosome in the bed bug Cimex lectularius Linnaeus, 1758 (Heteroptera, Cimicidae): a survey across Europe.

Variation in the number of chromosomes was revealed in 61 samples of Cimex lectularius Linnaeus, 1758 from the Czech Republic and other European countries, hosted on Myotis Kaup, 1829 (4) and Homo sapiens Linnaeus, 1758 (57). The karyotype of all the specimens of Cimex lectularius analysed contained 26 autosomes and a varying number of the sex chromosomes. The number of sex chromosomes showed extensive variation, and up to 20 fragments were recorded. Altogether, 12 distinct karyotypes were distinguished. The male karyotypes consisted of 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 42 and 47 chromos

Skating and diving: Changes in functional morphology of the setal and microtrichial cover during ontogenesis in Aquarius paludum fabricius (Heteroptera, Gerridae).

We examined the morphology of setae and microtrichia in Aquarius paludum during larval development using a scanning electron microscope. We then conducted immersion experiments with larvae and adults in oxygenated and deoxygenated water. The adult water strider body is covered by a pilose double layer consisting of upper long setae (30-80 microm) and lower filiform microtrichia (5-9 microm). Only setae are present on the legs. Microtrichia on the larval body are very short: 0.5-0.6 microm in first and second instars, and 0.8-1.7 microm in third to fifth instars. Larval body setae are approxima

Morphological re-description of Cochlochila bullita (Stål) (Heteroptera: Tingidae), a potential pest of Orthosiphon aristatus Blume Miq. (Lamiales: Lamiaceae) in Malaysia.

One species of lace bug Cochlochila bullita Stål (Heteroptera: Tingidae) was found heavily infested Orthosiphon aristatus Blume Miq., an important medicinal plant in Malaysia. A morphological re-description of C. bullita was done in order to facilitate the identification of this oligophagous insect pest. Five variables, body length and width, antenna length, tibia length and head width were measured from 15 samples from each stage. Among these variables, body length and width were used to construct the ratio for species identification; while body lengths with the other three variables were use

Phylogeographic history of the ring distribution in Malcus flavidipes (Heteroptera: Malcidae) shaped by directional dispersal and island adaptation in the South China Sea region.

The ring distribution pattern offers a unique perspective for analysing the mechanisms of species or population differentiation. The semi-closed South China Sea (SCS) region, with its islands, peninsulas, and continental margins, is ideal for studying the formation of ring distribution patterns and the evolutionary dynamics of island populations. This study focused on Malcus flavidipes, a species distributed in the SCS region. Based on double-digest restriction-associated DNA data and geographic distribution data, population genetic approaches and species distribution modeling were employed to

A synopsis of the numbers of testicular follicles and ovarioles in true bugs (Heteroptera, Hemiptera) - sixty-five years of progress after J. Pendergrast's review.

The structure of testes and ovaries can be described in its simplest form by the number of follicles and ovarioles they contain. Sixty-five years after the last review of the internal reproductive systems in true bugs (Heteroptera), the data accumulated today on the number of testicular follicles and ovarioles in their gonads are summarized. In addition, data on the number and type (mesadenia/ectadenia) of accessory glands are given. The hemipteran suborder Heteroptera constitutes one of the most diverse groups of non-homometabolous ('Hemimetabola') insects, comprising more than 40,000 describ

Description of fifty-one new species and new taxonomic arrangement for the E. sexdens group of the subgenus Edessa (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae, Edessinae, Edessa).

Within the subfamily Edessinae, Edessa Fabricius, 1803 is the genus with the most nomenclatural and taxonomic issues, basically related to the large number of poorly described species and the large number of new species. Furthermore, for many groups of morphologically similar species, certain names are used as tag names, adding to confusion and misidentification. The genus Edessa has been studied in small groups of species, either informal morphological groups within the genus or formal subgenera. Recently the nominal subgenus was revised and delimited, including the group E. sexdens. The E. s

Chromosomal distribution of major rDNA and genome size variation in Belostoma angustum Lauck, B. nessimiani Ribeiro & Alecrim, and B. sanctulum Montandon (Insecta, Heteroptera, Belostomatidae).

Known as "electric-light bugs", belostomatids potentially act as agents of biological control. The Belostoma genus has holokinetic chromosomes, interspecific variation in diploid number, sex chromosome system and DNA content. Thus, the chromosomal complement, the accumulation of constitutive heterochromatin and the distribution of rDNA clusters by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in Belostoma angustum (BAN), Belostoma sanctulum (BSA), and Belostoma nessimiani (BNE) were evaluated. In addition, a comparative analysis of the DNA content of these species and B. estevezae (BES) was perfor

A microscopy investigation of the complex problem of infertility of insect hybrids. Studies on the reproductive systems, eggshells, and karyotypes of the representatives of the genus Platymeris (Heteroptera, Reduviidae) and their hybrids.

Hybridisation is still a widely studied phenomenon that allows us to look at some processes differently. However, obtaining fertile hybrids, which we might consider in the long term as precursors of a new species, is still a field that requires research. Much of the research done so far indicates that hybrids are sterile - either sex or both. It is influenced by various mechanisms, both prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive isolation. Thanks to the use of light and transmission electron microscopy, our research has made it possible to understand, at least partially, the causes of infertility

Photoperiodic regulation of the phospholipid molecular species composition in thoracic muscles and fat body of Pyrrhocoris apterus (Heteroptera) via an endocrine gland, corpus allatum.

In the conventional view, the winter adaptation of membrane lipids is induced by temperature decrease. We propose that winter remodelling of membranes in Pyrrhocoris apterus is triggered by short-day photoperiod before the temperature decrease and changes caused by cold temperature represent the later phase of adaptation. The induction of diapause by short-day photoperiod results in an accumulation of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) molecular species with C(16:0)/C(18:2) acyl chains esterified to sn-1/sn-2 positions of glycerol at the expense of C(18:0)/C(18:2). Proportions of C(16:0)/C(18:2)-PE

New cytogenetic data for three species of Pentatomidae (Heteroptera): Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas, 1851), Loxa viridis (Palisot de Beauvois, 1805), and Edessa collaris (Dallas, 1851).

In this paper, we present new cytogenetic data for three species of the family Pentatomidae: Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas, 1851), Loxa viridis (Palisot de Beauvois, 1805), and Edessa collaris (Dallas, 1851). All studied species presented holocentric chromosomes and inverted meiosis for the sex chromosomes. D. melacanthus has 2n = 12 (10A + XY); L. viridis showed 2n = 14 (12A + XY); and E. collaris showed 2n = 14 (12A + XY). C-banding was performed for the first time in these species and revealed terminal and interstitial heterochromatic regions on the autosomes; DAPI/CMA3 staining showed diff

Comments on Two Controversial Oriental Assassin Bug Species of the Genus Rhynocoris (Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Harpactorinae), with the Description of R. minutus sp. nov. from China.

The two closely related Oriental species of the genus Rhynocoris, R. costalis (Stål, 1867) and R. fuscipes (Fabricius, 1787), exhibit remarkable morphological similarity, particularly in their overall red and black body coloration, including the head, thorax, and abdomen. Based on the examination of type specimens and non-type material collected from various localities of southern China, we found these two congeners were misidentified in many previous publications. Due to the restricted distribution and limited population size of R. fuscipes in China, most taxonomic, biological, and biocontrol

A new genus and species of mirine plant bug endemic to central Honshu, Japan, a region receiving the world's heaviest snowfall (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Mirinae: Mirini).

A new species representing a new genus of mirine plant bug, Itoigawacoris venustulus, is diagnosed and described, based on specimens recently discovered from a geographically unique region of world's heaviest snowfall along the Fossa Magna in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. This vernal, endemic mirid was confirmed to be only associated with a Japanese boxwood, Buxus microphylla, on which the immature forms and adults were observed to co-occur before the spring thaw. Judging from the male and female genitalic structures, the present new genus is included in 'Lygus-complex' and assumed to be most clo

Anatomical and histological descriptions of the alimentary system, salivary gland, and Malpighian tubules of Legnotus limbosus, the bordered shieldbug (Geoffroy, 1785) (Heteroptera: Cydnidae)-light and electron microscopic studies.

We reported the histological and anatomical analyses of Legnotus limbosus's alimentary and excretory system using stereomicroscope, light and electron microscopy. As a result of the obtained data, the digestive tract of L. limbosus has three main parts: fore, mid, and hindgut. The salivary gland and gastric caeca are structures that assist digestion. The salivary gland is a pair consisting of the principal and accessory salivary glands. The foregut has the pharynx and esophagus. The pharynx structure is located immediately after the mouth and continues with the esophagus as a thin, long canal.
