Homocysteine (Hcy) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the impact of fructose on Hcy concentrations and whether fructose intake increases disease risk through elevated Hcy remains unclear. We hypothesized that fructose intake is related to Hcy concentrations, and Hcy acts as a mediator linking fructose with CVD and hypertension. We analyzed 2003 to 2006 NHANES data using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses to examine the relationships between fructose intake from different food sources and Hcy concentrations, and to a

The consumption of fructose, primarily from high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), has increased considerably in the United States during the past several decades. Intake of HFCS may now exceed that of the other major caloric sweetener, sucrose. Some nutritionists believe fructose is a safer form of sugar than sucrose, particularly for people with diabetes mellitus, because it does not adversely affect blood-glucose regulation, at least in the short-term. However, fructose has potentially harmful effects on other aspects of metabolism. In particular, fructose is a potent reducing sugar that promotes

BACKGROUND: The habitual excessive intake of sugar (i.e., sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup), which has been implicated in the onset of diabetes mellitus, induces excessive production of glyceraldehyde, a metabolite produced during glucose and fructose metabolism, in hepatocytes, neuronal cells, and cardiomyocytes.
MAIN TEXT: Toxic advanced glycation end-products (toxic AGEs, TAGE) are formed from reactions between glyceraldehyde and intracellular proteins, and their accumulation contributes to various cellular disorders. TAGE leakage from cells affects the surrounding cells and increases

Excess consumption of added sugars, commonly delivered through sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup, has increased in parallel with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. These systemic metabolic disturbances are consistently associated with a range of ocular conditions. However, whether high-fructose intake exerts independent and fructose-specific effects on ocular tissues remains uncertain, because most human evidence is indirect, often mediated through metabolic syndrome phenotypes, and frequently confounded by mixed dietary exposures and total energy intake. This review synthesi

Male reproductive health faces mounting concern as global sperm concentration (SC) has declined markedly, with evidence linking this trend to environmental and lifestyle factors rather than natural variability. In parallel, rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension point to shared mechanisms with infertility, particularly those rooted in diet. High intake of processed sugars, especially high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), contributes to metabolic dysfunction, oxidative stress, hormonal imbalance, and inflammation, all of which can impair sperm function and disrupt the hypothalamic-pitui

The epidemiology of gout has changed dramatically over the past century. Once thought of as a disease of the nobility, it is now an egalitarian disease that affects patients across the socioeconomic spectrum. The incidence of gout has also risen in recent years, to the point that we are now seeing what is regarded by some as a "second epidemic" of gout. This change coincides with a significant dietary shift for many Americans - in particular, the advent of high-fructose corn syrup as the most prominent sweetener in the modern American diet and what may be a related rise in obesity. Fructose is

Consumption of fructose has risen markedly in recent decades owing to the use of sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup in beverages and processed foods1, and this has contributed to increasing rates of obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease2-4. Fructose intake triggers de novo lipogenesis in the liver4-6, in which carbon precursors of acetyl-CoA are converted into fatty acids. The ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) enzyme cleaves cytosolic citrate to generate acetyl-CoA, and is upregulated after consumption of carbohydrates7. Clinical trials are currently pursuing the inhibition of ACLY as a treat

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritic condition affecting more men than women. Hyperuricemia and the deposition of urate crystals into the joints are the hallmarks of gout. The prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia is rising in the United States and world-wide possibly due to the aging population, comorbidities, and other lifestyle factors. Gout and serum uric acid (SUA) levels are highly heritable, underscoring the role of genetics on disease risk and possibly the racial disparities in gout prevalence. However, high consumption of high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, select dietary life

OBJECTIVE: The increased intake of added sweeteners, such as high-fructose corn syrup, has been associated with a rise in metabolic dysfunctions in gut and brain. While different evidence showed that dietary fructose induces gut microbiota reshaping, the sugar impact on specific bacteria-derived metabolites remains an understudied topic. In this study, we identified secondary bile acids (sBAs) as molecules differentially represented in plasma of rats fed a fructose-rich diet compared to control animals, and hypothesized that these metabolites might be a target for probiotic-based strategies to

Fructose is mainly consumed with added sugars (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup), and represents up to 10% of total energy intake in the US and in several European countries. This hexose is essentially metabolized in splanchnic tissues, where it is converted into glucose, glycogen, lactate, and, to a minor extent, fatty acids. In animal models, high fructose diets cause the development of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. Ectopic lipid deposition in the liver is an early occurrence upon fructose exposure, and is tightly linked to hepatic insulin resistance.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarettes containing nicotine (Nic) are a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. We reported that Nic delivered via injections or e-cigarette vapor led to hepatic steatosis in mice fed with a high-fat diet. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the main sweetener in sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in the US. Increased consumption of SSBs with HFCS is associated with increased risks of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Nicotinamide riboside (NR) increases mitochondrial nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and protects mice against hep

PURPOSE: The excessive fructose intake including high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may be responsible for increase of obesity occurrence. This study was designed to find potential differences in duodenal fructose transporters on mRNA and protein levels between obese and normal weight children and adolescents.
MATERIALS/METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study on a group of 106 hospitalized patients aged 12 to 18. Glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) and glucose transporter 5 (GLUT5) mRNA as well as protein levels (ELISA and Western blot methods) were assessed in duodenal mucosa biopsies of the pa

BACKGROUND: The increasing consumption of caloric sweeteners has been associated with the development of non-communicable diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. Artificial sweeteners may represent a suitable alternative. However, their acceptance among consumers remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess attitudes toward artificial sweetener consumption among the population of the Czech Republic.
METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey entitled "Attitudes of Respondents Toward the Consumption of Artificial Sweeteners" was conducted among 147 participants from th

D-Allulose-containing rare sugar sweeteners have been categorized into two types, rare sugar syrup (RSS), consisting of 4 rare monosaccharides, and modified glucose syrup (MGS), rich in D-allulose, which was previously referred to D-psicose. The anti-obesity effect of RSS and D-allulose has been already clarified, but that of rare monosaccharides other than D-allulose in RSS has not yet been well understood. Here, we investigated and compared the anti-obesity effect of RSS and MGS in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 dietary groups: a high-sucrose control diet group (S), a high-fructo

Introduction International studies show an increased incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). It is assumed that the major components of MS - obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension - are linked to renal damage through the systemic release of several pro-inflammatory mediators, such as uric acid (UA), C-reactive protein (CRP), and generalized oxidative stress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the extent of kidney impairment and manifestations of dysfunction in rats with fructose-induced MS. Methods We used a model of

The aim of the present research was to study the formation of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) during digestive process of meal-resembling systems. An average meal (protein, starch and oil) and sugar-containing meals (protein and glucose or fructose or high fructose corn syrup (HCFS)) were tested. Intestinal simple amino acid systems were also analyzed to gain insight into their contribution to the Maillard reaction (MR). Decrease of lysine (11.7-34%), arginine (24-35%) and other amino acids occurred after digestion of the meals. Fructosamine (42.6±4.7 and 332.9±10.4μg/ml) and fluorescent add

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by deposition of monosodium urate crystals within synovial joints. Although it is most well-known for its arthritis, gout has an intimate relationship with many other cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. Current recommendations support aggressive medical therapy to treat gout, whereas dietary counseling has become less emphasized. This article argues for the absolute importance of dietary counseling in gout and proves why this counseling may impact the long term well-being of a patient with gout.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a disease of increasing interest, as its prevalence is on the rise. NAFLD has been linked to metabolic syndrome, which is becoming more common due to the Western diet. Because NAFLD can lead to cirrhosis and related complications including hepatocellular carcinoma, the increasing prevalence is concerning, and medical therapy aimed at treating NAFLD is of great interest. Researchers studying the effects of medical therapy on NAFLD use dietary mouse models. The two main types of mouse model diets are the methionine- and choline-deficient (MCD) diet and

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease, have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. The global increase in dietary sugar consumption, which is largely attributed to the production and widespread use of cheap alternatives such as high-fructose corn syrup, is a major driving factor of NCDs. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of sugar metabolism and its impact on host health is imperative to rise to the challenge of reducing NCDs. Notably, fructose appears to exert more pronounced deleterious effects than glu

Strong sugar tolerance and high bioethanol yield of yeast under high-gravity fermentation have caused great attention in the bioethanol industry. In this study, Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats Cas9 (CRISPR-Cas9) technology was used to knock out S. cerevisiae GPD2, FPS1, ADH2, DLD3, ERG5, NTH1, and AMS1 to construct engineering strain S. cerevisiae GFADENA. Under high-gravity fermentation with 400 g/L of sucrose, S. cerevisiae GFADENA produced 135 g/L ethanol, which increased 17% compared with the wild-type strain. In addition, S. cerevisiae GFADENA produced 145 g/L of
