The recent deposition of persistent organic pollutants and mercury to the Dasuopu glacier, Mt. Xixiabangma, central Himalayas.

High mountains may serve as condensers for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and the ice/snow core can provide long-term records of atmospheric deposition of pollutants. In this study, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in firn core from Dasuopu Glacier were analyzed and the seasonal variation and deposition flux of these pollutants were investigated. PCB 28 was always detected in samples from different firn core layers and concentrations of PCB 28 were in the range of 0.09-0.3 ng/l. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and total DDTs (p-p'-DDD and p-p'-DDT) wer

Exploring the bacterial diversity and its antibiotic resistance in Kabru Glacier ice cores, Sikkim Himalaya.

INTRODUCTION: The Kabru Glacier, located in the Sikkim Himalayan region at an altitude of 7,318-7,412 m above sea level (a.s.l), forms part of the Kanchenjunga range in the Eastern Himalaya. Glaciers in this region are predominantly summer-fed and highly sensitive to climatic fluctuations. Despite their ecological significance, glaciers of the Sikkim Himalaya remain largely unexplored from a microbiological perspective due to harsh weather conditions and limited accessibility. In this context, the present study investigates the bacterial diversity across different depths (upper, middle, and bo

Polyphenol-Rich Wild Fruits of the Indian Himalayas as a Potential Nutraceutical Candidate for the Management of Endometriosis: A Review.

India, home to 4 biodiversity hotspots, hosts 675 wild species used for nutritional and therapeutic purposes. Wild edible fruits are highly valuable for their rich content of health-beneficial compounds, such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and vitamins. The shift in modern lifestyles has increasingly impacted human health. Several factors contribute to heightened oxidative stress, which underpins the development of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Endometriosis, one of these conditions influenced by oxidative stress, currently lacks a definitive cure, leaving patients reliant on hormonal and su

An Uncommon Mould in an Uncommon Place: A Case of Scopulariopsis brevicaulis Keratitis From the Northern Himalayas, India.

Scopulariopsis brevicaulis is an uncommon cause of fungal keratitis, usually occurring after ocular trauma, and is associated with therapeutic difficulties because of its limited susceptibility to antifungal agents. We report the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with pain, redness, and watering of the left eye for one month following injury by iron foreign body particles during welding. Ocular examination revealed a corneal ulcer with hypopyon and markedly reduced visual acuity (2/60). Initial microscopic evaluation was negative for fungal elements; however, fungal culture after extende

Cross-cultural ethnobotany of the Baltis and Shinas in the Kharmang district, Trans-Himalaya India-Pakistan border.

Human communities that inhabit the political borders live a transitional life, which is due to several socio-political and geo-climatic factors. The current cross-cultural ethnomedicinal study was conducted at the highly elevated Pakistan-India borders of the Western Himalayas in order to address the medicinal flora and folk knowledge of Balti and Shina communities. Ethnobotanical field surveys were conducted from May 2021 to September 2022. We used semi-structured interviews in order to collect the ethnomedicinal data. The collected data was analyzed using the relative frequency of the citati

Plant growth-promoting traits of culturable seed microbiome of citrus species from Purvanchal Himalaya.

Despite Northeastern India being "Treasure House of Citrus Genetic Wealth," genetic erosion of citrus diversity poses severe concern with a corresponding loss in seed microbial diversity. The seed microbiome of citrus species unique to the Purvanchal Himalaya is seldom explored for their use in sustainable orchard management. Isolation and characterization of culturable seed microbiomes of eight citrus species, namely, Citrus reticulata Blanco, C. grandis (L.) Genomic characterization of pre-Green Revolution wheat landraces from the Nepalese and Bhutanese Himalayas reveals geographically structured diversity.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) landraces collected before the widespread regional adoption of Green Revolution cultivars provide a historical record of locally maintained germplasm. We characterized a panel of 202 accessions collected from Nepal and Bhutan between 1952 and 1958. Genotyping by Random Amplicon Sequencing-Direct yielded 30,228 high-quality markers; removing 38 close genetic duplicates produced a nonredundant panel of 164 accessions. We investigated genetic diversity, linkage disequilibrium, population structure, and spatial variation in effective migration, compared the panel with

First online observations of greenhouse gases over the Central Himalayas: insights in fluxes, vegetation links, and meteorological controls.

Ground observations with diurnal variability over the Himalayas are crucial to validate climate mitigation efforts, build accurate emissions inventories, and better forecasting. This study bridges the acute scarcity of such measurements by making the first online observations of CO2 and CH4 with CO at a mountain site (Nainital, 29.4° N, 79.5° E, 1958 m a.m.s.l.) continuously for 5 years in the Central Himalayas. Observed levels of CO2 and CH4 are higher than those at other background sites. The boundary layer evolution and upslope winds determine the diurnal pattern of CH4 and CO, while CO2 di

Advances in Systemic Therapy for Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Commentary on The Impact of the STRIDE Regimen in HIMALAYA Trial.

Unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a global challenge, with limited effective treatment options for advanced-stage disease. The HIMALAYA trial (phase III randomized study that evaluated the STRIDE regimen) introduced the Single Tremelimumab Regular Interval Durvalumab (STRIDE) regimen, an immunotherapy-based approach that achieved a median overall survival (OS) of 16.43 months compared to 13.77 months with sorafenib. While statistically significant, this ~2.7 months OS gain warrants scrutiny in light of STRIDE's increased immune-related toxicity and cost. This commentary evalu

Plain language summary of the HIMALAYA study: tremelimumab and durvalumab for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer).

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: This is a summary of results from a phase 3 clinical study called HIMALAYA. HIMALAYA looked at treatment with one dose of a medication called tremelimumab combined with multiple doses of a medication called durvalumab (the STRIDE regimen) or multiple doses of durvalumab alone. These treatments were compared with a medication called sorafenib in participants with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is a type of liver cancer that is difficult to treat because it is often diagnosed when it is unresectable, meaning it can no longer be removed with surgery.

Microbial communities and their potential for degradation of dissolved organic carbon in cryoconite hole environments of Himalaya and Antarctica.

Cryoconite holes (cylindrical melt-holes on the glacier surface) are important hydrological and biological systems within glacial environments that support diverse microbial communities and biogeochemical processes. This study describes retrievable heterotrophic microbes in cryoconite hole water from three geographically distinct sites in Antarctica, and a Himalayan glacier, along with their potential to degrade organic compounds found in these environments. Microcosm experiments (22 days) show that 13-60% of the dissolved organic carbon in the water within cryoconite holes is bio-available to

Continuous positive airway pressure treatment for acute mountain sickness at 4240 m in the Nepal Himalaya.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is very common at altitudes above 2500 m. There are few treatment options in the field where electricity availability is limited, and medical assistance or oxygen is unavailable or difficult to access. Positive airway pressure has been used to treat AMS at 3800 m. We hypothesized that continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) could be used under field conditions powered by small rechargeable batteries. Methods Part 1. 5 subjects trekked to 3500 m from 2800 m in one day and slept there for one night, ascending in the late afternoon to 3840 m, where they slept usin

Acute mountain sickness, dehydration, and bicarbonate clearance: preliminary field data from the Nepal Himalaya.

BACKGROUND: In 1999, Basnyat et al. published preliminary data demonstrating an inverse correlation between hydration status and acute mountain sickness during an epidemiological study performed in the vicinity of Mount Everest. To expand on these findings, we have re turned to the Langtang area of the Nepal Himalaya to perform more specific studies of altitude illness related to dehydration and hypoxemia using urine studies, pulse oximetry, and physical examination. HYPOTHESIS: Dehydration will incite physiological changes aimed at the preservation of vascular volume homeostasis characterize
