Parsing the Role of the Hippocampus in Approach-Avoidance Conflict.

The hippocampus plays a central role in the approach-avoidance conflict that is central to the genesis of anxiety. However, its exact functional contribution has yet to be identified. We designed a novel gambling task that generated approach-avoidance conflict while controlling for spatial processing. We fit subjects' behavior using a model that quantified the subjective values of choice options, and recorded neural signals using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Distinct functional signals were observed in anterior hippocampus, with inferior hippocampus selectively recruited when

Prospective representation of navigational goals in the human hippocampus.

Mental representation of the future is a fundamental component of goal-directed behavior. Computational and animal models highlight prospective spatial coding in the hippocampus, mediated by interactions with the prefrontal cortex, as a putative mechanism for simulating future events. Using whole-brain high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging and multi-voxel pattern classification, we tested whether the human hippocampus and interrelated cortical structures support prospective representation of navigational goals. Results demonstrated that hippocampal activity patterns code for fu

Effects of neonatal stress on gamma oscillations in hippocampus.

Chronic early life stress increases adult risk for depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, illnesses characterized by aberrant functions of cognition and memory. We asked whether chronic early life stress disrupts maturation of gamma oscillations, on which these functions depend. Lifelong impairment of the stress response results from separation of rat pups from the dam for three hours per day during a critical period of hippocampal development (PNDs 2-14). Parvalbumin-expressing interneurons, including the basket cell network which is fundamental to gamma oscillations, are reduced in

Cyclosporin A enhances neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus.

Neural precursor cells (NPCs) in the adult mammalian brain demonstrate potential in applications of neural repair in the CNS. Recent work has shown that cyclosporin A (CsA), a commonly used immunosuppressive drug, expands the size of the NPC pool in the subventricular region by promoting cell survival. We asked if CsA had similar effects on NPCs in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus, leading to increased neurogenesis. We used the in vitro and in vivo assays to examine CsA's effect on the size of the NPC pool and the proliferation and differentiation profile of cells within the DG. We fo

Low incidence of melanoma brain metastasis in the hippocampus.

AIMS: ANZMTG 01.07 WBRTMel is a phase 3 randomized trial to address the role of whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) after local treatment of 1-3 melanoma brain metastases. Modern radiation therapy technologies can now conformally spare the hippocampus during WBRT and therefore potentially reduce the risk of neurocognitive deficit. The aims of this study were to report the prevalence of melanoma metastases within the hippocampal sparing region and to identify variables that correlate with the presence of metastases within the hippocampal sparing region. METHODS: The pre-local treatment MRI sc

Recognition memory and theta-gamma interactions in the hippocampus.

Neuronal oscillations and cross-frequency interactions in the rat hippocampus relate in important ways to memory processes and serve as a model for studying oscillatory activity in cognition more broadly. We report here that hippocampal synchrony (CA3-CA1 coherence) increased markedly in the low gamma range as rats were exploring novel objects, particularly those for which the rat subsequently showed good memory. The gamma synchrony varied across phases of the theta rhythm such that coherence was highest at the falling slope and trough of the theta wave. Further, the shape of the theta wave wa

Cranial irradiation compromises neuronal architecture in the hippocampus.

Cranial irradiation is used routinely for the treatment of nearly all brain tumors, but may lead to progressive and debilitating impairments of cognitive function. Changes in synaptic plasticity underlie many neurodegenerative conditions that correlate to specific structural alterations in neurons that are believed to be morphologic determinants of learning and memory. To determine whether changes in dendritic architecture might underlie the neurocognitive sequelae found after irradiation, we investigated the impact of cranial irradiation (1 and 10 Gy) on a range of micromorphometric parameter

Memory, visual discrimination performance, and the human hippocampus.

We evaluated recent proposals that the hippocampus supports certain kinds of visual discrimination performance, for example, when spatial processing is required and the stimuli have a high degree of feature overlap. Patients with circumscribed hippocampal lesions tried to discriminate between images of similar faces or images of similar scenes. In one condition, elements of the stimulus display repeated from trial to trial, and in another condition every trial was unique. In the repeated condition for both faces and scenes, controls gradually improved their performance across testing. In the t

Hippocampus: a "forgotten" border zone of brain ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Hippocampus is selectively susceptible to ischemic damage and it could be, in some conditions, considered as a border zone of brain ischemia. RESULTS: We illustrate this concept with three cases of hippocampal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) restrictions secondary to a carotid artery dissection with an ipsilateral fetal posterior cerebral artery (PCA) in two cases and to global brain hypoperfusion consequent to a cardiac arrest in the last case. CONCLUSION: The hypoperfusion induced by a cardiac arrest or an internal carotid dissection with an incomplete circle of Willis promote

Effects of acute perinatal asphyxia in the rat hippocampus.

In the present work, we have used a rat animal model to study the early effects of intrauterine asphyxia occurring no later than 60 min following the cesarean-delivery procedure. Transitory hypertonia accompanied by altered posture was observed in asphyxiated pups, which also showed appreciably increased lactate values in plasma and hippocampal tissues. Despite this, there was no difference in terms of either cell viability or metabolic activities such as oxidation of lactate, glucose, and glycine in the hippocampus of those fetuses submitted to perinatal asphyxia with respect to normoxic anim

Morphological analysis of astrocytes in the hippocampus in mechanical asphyxiation.

The present study investigated the morphology of astrocytes in the hippocampus and serum S100B levels in cases of mechanical asphyxia due to neck compression (n=23: atypical hanging, n=7; ligature/manual strangulation, n=16) with regard to the classical autopsy findings, compared with those of other types of asphyxiation (n=9) and acute myocardial infarction/ischemia (AMI, n=20). The decrease in intact astrocyte number, as shown by S100 and GFAP-immunostaining, was larger for asphyxiation due to neck compression compared with that for other asphyxiation and AMI, showing a correlation with the

[Language disorders in children with morphologic abnormalities of the hippocampus].

PURPOSE: Morphologic abnormalities of the hippocampal formations (MAHF) are more frequently observed in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We wished to specify the types of disorders associated with these malformations based on a retrospective case series by studying the language of the children presenting these abnormalities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From the data of all the MRIs taken in the neuroradiology ward of our center over 16 months in patients under 18 years of age, we retrospectively selected the children with an MAHF, isolated or associated with other malformations. The MAHFs were def

Kinematics of suction feeding in the seahorse Hippocampus reidi.

Fish typically use a rostro-caudal wave of head expansion to generate suction, which is assumed to cause a uni-directional, anterior-to-posterior flow of water in the expanding head. However, compared with typical fish, syngnathid fishes have a remarkably different morphology (elongated snout, small hyoid, immobile pectoral girdle) and feeding strategy (pivot feeding: bringing the small mouth rapidly close to the prey by neurocranial dorsorotation). As a result, it is unclear how suction is generated in Syngnathidae. In this study, lateral and ventral expansions of the head were quantified in

A demonstration that the hippocampus supports both recollection and familiarity.

Recognition memory is thought to depend on two distinct processes: recollection and familiarity. There is debate as to whether damage to the hippocampus selectively impairs recollection or whether it impairs both recollection and familiarity. If hippocampal damage selectively impairs recollection but leaves familiarity intact, then patients with circumscribed hippocampal lesions should exhibit the full normal range of low-confidence and high-confidence familiarity-based recognition. High-confidence, familiarity-based decisions are ordinarily accompanied by successful recollection (when memory

Low-calcium epileptiform activity in the hippocampus in vivo.

It has been clearly established that nonsynaptic interactions are sufficient for generating epileptiform activity in brain slices. However, it is not known whether this type of epilepsy model can be generated in vivo. In this paper we investigate low-calcium nonsynaptic epileptiform activity in an intact hippocampus. The calcium chelator EGTA was used to lower [Ca2+]o in the hippocampus of urethane anesthetized rats. Spontaneous and evoked field potentials in CA1 pyramidal stratum and in CA1 stratum radiatum were recorded using four-channel silicon recording probes. Three different types of ep

Cell cycle markers in the hippocampus in Alzheimer's disease.

Using immunohistochemistry we have analysed the nuclear expression of cyclins A, B, D, and E in neurones in the hippocampi of control subjects and patients suffering from various neurodegenerative disorders including. Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cyclins A and D could not be detected but varying degrees of cyclin E expression were found in all patient groups including control subjects. Cyclin B expression was not detected in control subjects but it was expressed in the subiculum, dentate gyrus and CA1 region in patients with AD-type pathology and in the CA2 region and the dentate gyrus of cases o

NCAM is essential for axonal growth and fasciculation in the hippocampus.

The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), probably the best characterized and most abundant cell adhesion molecule on neurons, is thought to be a major regulator of axonal growth and pathfinding. Here we present a detailed analysis of these processes in mice deficient for all NCAM isoforms, generated by gene targeting. The hippocampal mossy fiber tract shows prominent expression of polysialylated NCAM and the generation of new axonal projections throughout life. Focusing on this important intrahippocampal connection, we demonstrate that in the absence of NCAM, fasciculation and pathfinding of

[Treatable ischemic neuronal damage in the gerbil hippocampus].

The Mongolian gerbil is known to develop delayed neuronal death in the hippocampus following brief forebrain ischemia (Brain Res 239: 57-69). Morphological, biochemical, or electrophysiological studies on this neuronal injury have shown that neurons still retain potential reversibility at the earlier period of alteration. To examine this possibility, immediately following 5 min of ischemia in the gerbil, pentobarbital, diazepam, or nizofenone was injected. Seven days following ischemic insult, animals were perfusion fixed and neuronal density in the hippocampal CA1 subfield was counted. Most o

Efferent connections of the hippocampus and adjacent regions in the pigeon.

In this investigation, the projections of the dorsomedial (viz. hippocampus) and adjacent dorsolateral cortical mantle (viz. parahippocampus) of the pigeon telencephalon were studied with the use of 3H-amino acid radioautography. The results indicate that the fibers which arise from these cortical areas project to the septum. The projection to this structure is topographically organized in a crude manner along the longitudinal axis of the hippocampal complex. Fibers arising from rostral levels of the dorsomedial hippocampal complex project principally to central portions of the precommissural
