Merycism or rumination disorder. A historical investigation and current assessment.

BACKGROUND: In the 'fashionable' field of eating disorders, there has been a notable gap in the historiography of rumination, allowing considerable scope for constructing a comprehensive historical profile of this disorder. METHOD: A wide-ranging examination of printed material, both etymological and medical, backed by a Medline computer search, uncovered extensive sources, some of considerable rarity, including case reports from the early 17th century onwards. Extracted data focused on incidence, sex distribution, age range, outcome and causation, and the findings are discussed in relation t…

The Great Irish Famine (1845-52) and the Irish asylum system: remembering, forgetting, and remembering again.

The Great Irish Famine (1845-52) saw the Irish population fall by 20% as one million people died and another million emigrated. The Famine o … cal way. Intriguing as it is, this hypothesis requires further study, as does the distinctly uneven historiography of the Famine in relation to the Irish mental hospitals.

Psychiatric care at a national mental institution during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39): Santa Isabel de Leganés.

The scanty research available regarding the health of the mentally ill during the Spanish Civil War is largely due to the loss of most documents, and to the difficulty in accessing the existing archives for decades. Up to the present time, historiography has described overcrowded facilities for the mentally disturbed and the fact that old buildings such as convents and spas were turned into establishments for treating patients with mental problems during the Civil War. However, research reviewing the institutional life and conditions of psychiatric patients during this war is still rather scar…

[Technology and disciplinary fields: cytotechnicians and implementation of the Pap test in Brazil].

The implementation of the Pap test as a primary technology in the control of cervical cancer in Brazil was the result of choices, agreements … nology, whose practitioners interpret this test. Second, based on questions raised by international historiography in the field of science and technology, we explore in detail how the adoption of the Pap smear transpired within the Brazilian context, focussing on the debates among the various professional groups with an interest in the suitability of the test an …

History of mental retardation: an essay review.

The history of mental retardation previously focused on residential institutions and the ideas of professionals. Given that the vast majority of people with mental retardation lived in their family homes or other locations in their communities, this emphasis has been misleading. Recent historical studies by James W. Trent Jr.; Philip M. Ferguson; Steven Noll; and the British scholars in David Wright and Anne Digby's collection, From Idiocy to Mental Deficiency, have opened up the field by describing the complicated relationships between families and the state, by outlining the development of l

English gentlemen in the early modern period held ultimate responsibility for the health of their households. Building on previous studies w … ce and the appeal of new ingredients. This article thus contributes a significant case study to the historiography of domestic medicine, presenting the gentlemanly pursuit of medical knowledge for practical and academic purposes as an activity which enhanced male status within the family and community.

Female same-sex desires: conceptualizing a disease in competing medical fields in nineteenth-century Europe.

This article examines the ways in which female same-sex desires were represented across a range of nineteenth-century European medical writings. While recognizing the conceptual innovations of the late-nineteenth-century psychiatric idea of "sexual inversion," it argues that the category of "sexual invert" was positioned alongside other medical representations of same-sex desires, such as gynecological descriptions of women with hypertrophy of the clitoris and socio-cultural analyses of the tribade-prostitute. These representations complicate current historical accounts of sexual inversion, wh

From African health and influenza pandemics to disease in Russia: the medical history of K. David Patterson.

This paper is a personal commentary on the contributions of noted medical historian K. David Patterson. The eightieth anniversary of the onset of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918-19 serves as a reminder of his contributions. His works on slavery and disease in Africa, influenza diffusion and the history of cholera and other diseases periodically appeared in Social Science and Medicine. With a publishing career that lasted from 1971 to 1996, his enduring contributions include revised estimates of mortality in Africa during the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919.

Nathaniel Hodges (1629-1688): Plague doctor.

Nathaniel Hodges was the son of Thomas Hodges (1605-1672), an influential Anglican preacher and reformer with strong connections in the political life of Carolingian London. Educated at Westminster School, Trinity College Cambridge and Christ Church College, Oxford, Nathaniel established himself as a physician in Walbrook Ward in the City of London. Prominent as one of a handful of medical men who remained in London during the time of the Great Plague of 1665, he wrote the definitive work on the outbreak. His daily precautions against contracting the disease included fortifying himself with Th

The Colonial State, African Dog-Owners, and the Political Economy of Rabies Vaccination Campaigns in Southern Rhodesia in the 1950s and 1960s.

This paper examines histories of postvaccinal breaks in immunity to rabies in domestic dogs between 1950 and the 1960s. It utilizes Veterinary and Native Commissioner's reports and newspapers in arguing that there is a gap in current southern African rabies historiography as it is yet to grapple with narratives about vaccine technologies. Current southern African rabies histories overly focus on white South African urban case studies. Focusing on the histories of postvaccinal breaks in immunity to rabies in Southern Rhodesia helps to explain why rabies became an ineradicable canine disease in …

Living History, Fading Minds: Dementia as the Gateway to Historical Past in South Africa via Antjie Krog's Blood's Inner Rhyme (2025) and Julia Martin's The Blackridge House (2019).

This manuscript analyzes the literary, social and cultural representations of dementia in Antjie Krog's Blood's Inner Rhyme (2025) and Julia Martin's The Blackridge House (2019). I contend that the authors' accounts of their mothers' struggle with dementia, from its onset to its end, function as living archives of personal and national history. I employ life writing, aging studies, and, to a lesser extent, historiography to examine the literary, social cultural, and historical dimensions of such experiences. I address the narrative construction of the mothers' identity in later life by highlig…
