More mysteries of opium reveal'd: 300 years of opiates.

This year is the 300th anniversary of the publication of one of the first books written about opiates and their subjective effects. Since that time the influence of opiates in Western society has grown enormously, as has our knowledge of the mechanisms by which these drugs produce their effects. Wars have been fought over the use of opiates and the economies of several countries depend on their production. In this article, some aspects of the history and effects of opiates on the arts in particular are explored.

[Historical analysis of otosclerosis surgery].

In the present work main surgical techniques used along the history to solve hypoacusis caused by otosclerosis (opening of the timpani box internal wall, <<duramater aeration>>, puncture of cephalorachidium liquid, etc.) are studied. Those which have been more spread due to their results are analyzed in more depth (fenestration of the horizontal semicircular ductus, stapes mobilization and stapedectomy).

A short history of biological warfare.

Biological weapons have been used in war from the start of recorded history. This article reviews the history of the subject, including the outbreak of the Black Death and the use of smallpox against American Indians. The new science of microbiology was misused from soon after its start and, despite the 1925 Geneva Protocol, the Japanese experimented extensively on prisoners in China. The Allies carried out extensive research during the Second World War, notably the United Kingdom into anthrax on Gruinard Island and the United States into a variety of agents. Despite the 1972 Biological Weapon

A brief history of epilepsy and its therapy in the Western Hemisphere.

The history of epilepsy and its treatment in the western world dates back at least 4 millennia to the ancient civilization of the middle east. Past and present treatments have been empirical, usually reflecting the prevailing views of epilepsy, be they medical, theological or superstitious. Ancient physicians relied on clinical observation to distinguish between epileptic syndromes and infer their cause. Early pathophysiological theories of epilepsy correctly identified the brain as the site of the problem, but emphasized incorrect causes such as an excess of phlegm in the brain. Treatments co

[From the history of pancreatology and pancreatitis classification].

The retrogastric location, small size and soft consistency of the pancreas were the reason for the late discovery of the physiology of this organ. The first information about the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas appeared only in the 16th-17th centuries. The role of the pancreas in digestion was studied in the 18th-19th centuries, its participation in carbohydrate metabolism - in the 19th century, and insulin was discovered in the first half of the 20th century. Clinical signs of pancreatitis were first described in the early 19th century, but diagnosis of this disease still presents cert

GIGANTISM AND ACROMEGALY THROUGH HISTORY.

Giants and acromegalists have long captured attention, and they were often almost mythical creatures of great strength and power. Due to their expressive appearance, they were recorded in myths and works of art much earlier than they were of interest to medical practitioners. The first recognition was made by a Dutch physician Johannes Wier in 1567, but the first description and appellation originated by Pierre Marie in 1886. Involvement and interest from neurosurgeons followed, and in 1907, Hermann Schloffer performed the first transsphenoidal surgery in a patient with pituitary adenoma. In 1

History of venereology in Croatia.

The term sexually transmitted infections has a wider meaning than the older venereal diseases. It is known that gonorrhea was present even in ancient times, whereas syphilis appeared in Europe at the end of the 15(th) century. Soon cases were observed along the coast in Zadar, Dubrovnik and Istria, and were treated by surgeons. The relatively late establishment of medical schools, along with wars and different governments, were some of the reasons why dermatovenereology as a specialty developed later in Croatia than in other European countries. Nevertheless, during the 19(th) century, many Cro

The development of a concept of mild head injury.

Medical and literary sources have described head injury and its effects from early Egyptian times. Though milder injury - concussion - must have been familiar, there was little specific written about it until the latter part of the 18th century. Descriptions of persisting symptoms appear in the 19th century, and discussion of their origin and management has continued and intensified since then. There have been several major issues. How does mechanical trauma produce a temporary loss of neurological function and is there some lasting damage? When symptoms persist do they follow a pattern which

Dupuytren Disease from Past to Present: A Review of the Historical and Evolving Landscape of Its Management.

Dupuytren disease (DD) has been described since the 17th century, but its true aetiology remains a mystery. The treatment of DD largely involves addressing the end stage of a complex fibroproliferative pathway, specifically, the cords. In recent years, there has been a shift to less radical approaches, with an increased adoption of percutaneous needle aponeurotomy (PNA) or collagenase. However, the difficulty in comparing outcomes across various treatments is likely to persist due to limitations in evaluating the effectiveness of those treatments. Patient-reported outcome measures may not accu

Yellow fever in the Americas.

Dutch slave traders brought yellow fever to the Americas from Africa during the mid-seventeenth century. For the next two and a half centuries, the disease terrorized seaports throughout the Americas. Proof of the mosquito hypothesis was delayed because of two aspects of the disease: patients are viremic only during the first several days of clinical illness, and most mosquitoes require about 2 weeks of viral incubation before becoming infectious. Control of Aedes aegypti in urban centers failed to eliminate the disease because of its transmission by tree-hole-breeding mosquitoes that spend th

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): a historical odyssey.

Purpura has been recognized since ancient times and its clinical syndromes were refined by important observations in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It required the development of adequate microscopes in the nineteenth century, however, to recognize the platelet, leading to the recognition of the thrombocytopenic component of ITP. The twentieth century brought recognition of the pathophysiology of the disorder and further defined the clinical states and treatments for ITP. The latter half of the twentieth century has focussed on the autoimmune components of ITP, initially

On counting cranial nerves.

The enumeration of the cranial nerves is traced briefly from Galen's seven to Willis' ten and to von Sömmerring's twelve. The system of von Sömmerring, which has been followed for some 200 years, is a useful convention, although it is merely one of several possibilities. The naming of the cranial nerves was standardized nearly 100 years ago.

A long gestation: spine anatomy from the medieval age to the end of the 19th century. An analytical historical review.

The discovery of spine anatomy followed a problem/solution pattern; it took almost 1000 years to transition from nihilism to perfectionism. Before the 16th century, the main issue was accessing and opening the spine. The level of knowledge progressed rapidly when the spinal canal was opened longitudinally during the 16th century. The 17th century was an incubation period that allowed the consolidation of the science of anatomy with the help of art, philosophy, and other sciences. In particular, the conservation of the cadaver was improved. Famous spine anatomists were close to Rembrandt, maste

A historical approach to syphilis infection in Korea.

From the end of the 15th century, syphilis spread worldwide, posing a serious threat to public health. Venereal syphilis has been a major research topic, not only in clinical medicine but also in paleopathology, especially because it is a disease of questionable origin and of high prevalence until the discovery of antibiotics. Syphilis in history has been studied extensively in Europe and the Americas, though less so in Asia. In this review, based on extant historical documents and available paleopathological data, we pinpoint the introduction and trace the spread of venereal syphilis in Korea

Historical perspectives on music as a cause of disease.

The relationship between music and medicine is generally understood in the benign context of music therapy, but, as this chapter shows, there is a long parallel history of medical theories that suggest that music can cause real physical and mental illness. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the idea of music as an expression of universal harmony was challenged by a more mechanistic model of nervous stimulation. By the 1790s, there was a substantial discourse on the dangers of musical overstimulation to health in medicine, literature, and etiquette books. During the nineteenth cen

A historical review of the concept of vascular dementia: lessons from the past for the future.

The history of senile dementia begins in the Greco-Roman period with basic concepts of senility by Pythagoras and Hippocrates. During the Middle Ages, the main contribution was by Roger Bacon in 1290. The first textbook of neurology, De cerebri morbis, by Jaso de Pratis (1549), included a chapter on dementia ("De memoriae detrimento"). In the 17th century, Thomas Willis recognized intellectual loss with aging. In the 19th century, Philippe Pinel removed chains from the mentally ill; his student Esquirol wrote the first modern classification of mental disease, including senile dementia. In 1860
