A Medical Inspector of Schools was appointed in Walsall Staffordshire in 1907, and her medical scrutiny of schoolchildren included a dental examination. The sections of her annual reports in 1910-12 which concerned the dental state of the 5, 7 and 14 year old children are presented. The percentage of children in these ages with one or more carious teeth was in excess of 50 per cent. The findings from these studies resulted in the appointment of the first school dental officer to Walsall Borough Corporation.

As Stomatologist and Dental Surgeon Albéric Pont founded with six other Dental Surgeons the School of Dentistry in Lyons which he ran for a long time. When he enlisted in the French Army in 1914 he soon became aware of the extent of facial damage that occurred among the injured soldiers. His subsequent decision was to create and run a Centre for maxillofacial surgery in Lyons. He died in 1960 and left a significant scientific work as well as technical elements of surgery, dental index and devices which still bear his name.

Recent studies have shown that the most dimorphic tooth is the mandibular canine. We have carried out a study on a random sample of 146 skeletons dating from the plague outbreak in Marseilles (1722). We studied 1284 maxillary and 1432 mandibular permanent teeth. Sexual dimorphism was tested on 89 individuals. Medicine among the ancient Mayas was a blend of religion and science. It was practiced by priests who inherited their position and received extensive education. The Mayas sutured wounds with human hair, reduced fractures, and used casts. They were skillful dental surgeons and made prostheses from jade and turquoise and filled teeth with iron pyrite. Three clinical diseases, pinta, leishmaniasis, and yellow fever, and several psychiatric syndromes were described.

Medical status of 1,500 patients attending a primary health care dental practice was examined by means of patient self-completed health questionnaire and by structured verbal interview by a dentist. Relevant medical histories and/or drug therapies affecting the practices of dentistry were found in 27.7% of patients. Anthropological analysis of the remains of Dr. Carl Austin Weiss revealed biological information consistent with his known characteristics. Postmortem changes included decomposition of amalgam dental restorations, likely releasing mercury that stained the anterior dentition, deposition of sulphur compounds on much of the skeleton, and the formation of numerous small bone fractures.
