The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence of hoarding symptoms among individuals presenting for treatment of anxiety symptoms. Participants included 130 adults who were seeking treatment at an outpatient anxiety disorders clinic between January 2004 and February 2006. During their initial assessment, participants (31 with panic disorder, 15 specific phobia, 27 social phobia, 36 obsessive-compulsive disorder, 21 generalized anxiety disorder, mean age 37 years, 57% female, 88% White) completed the Saving Inventory-Revised, a self-report measure of hoarding symptoms, and several

Although hoarding is observed in some patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), it has not been shown to share a specific relation with OCD. Across two studies, we found that (a) whereas the classic OCD symptoms of checking, rituals, and contamination intercorrelated consistently strongly with one another, hoarding related only moderately to both these OCD symptoms and to depression; (b) OCD patients were distinguished from both other patients and non-patients by classic OCD symptoms, but not by hoarding; and (c) whereas OCD symptoms showed consistent relations with Negative Affect, h

This state-of-the-science review describes the relatively new diagnosis of hoarding disorder (HD), characterized by difficulty discarding possessions and resulting clutter in living spaces. We review current theoretical models of HD, including a cognitive-behavioral model, a biopsychosocial model, an attachment model, and an addictions model. We then describe interventions for HD, focusing largely on cognitive-behavioral therapy for hoarding disorder (CBT-HD), the only treatment with conclusive evidence of efficacy. We review the components of CBT-HD and their rationale, noting that clinical r

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by difficulty discarding possessions and clutter that impairs daily functioning. Previous research has demonstrated a high correlation between hoarding behaviors and suicidal thoughts and behaviors; however, there is limited research on suicidal thoughts and behaviors in individuals meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria for HD. Our aim in this study was to report our findings about suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a HD sample.
METHODS: We used existing data from participants meeting D

Clinical management of hoarding disorder is challenging because of the weak insight of people with hoarding disorder, the lack of available tools for disease management in the health care system, and the absence of communication between health care and primary responders. To tackle this communication gap and, hence, improve clinical management of hoarding disorder, a community partnership initiated by people with hoarding disorder took place in Montreal. This initiative could profitably offer guidelines for other communities facing hoarding disorder challenges.

Research studies have revealed that people with hoarding typically collect and keep items due to their aesthetic appeal, utility and strong emotional attachment to the items resulting in clutter and limiting living spaces. This study aims to explore the experiences of individuals with hoarding disorder to understand and describe-the patterns and reasons for hoarding, experiences with decluttering and the impact of hoarding disorder on significant others and society in the context of a multi-ethnic urban Asian country. A total of 12 participants with hoarding disorder were recruited and intervi

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a persistent and severe psychiatric condition in which individuals are unable to discard possessions, which results in considerable clutter. Individuals who hoard often endorse interpersonal difficulties and social isolation. However, little research has examined mechanisms that may help to explain this relationship. One possible mechanism is hostility, which is characterized by increased sensitivity to real or perceived social threats. The current study examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility across two undergraduate samples. In study 1, uns

OBJECTIVES: Hoarding disorder (HD) is prevalent in older adults and contributes to morbidity and mortality. We attempted to estimate rates of hoarding amongst the elderly using the international Residential Assessment Instrument - Home Care (interRAI-HC).
SETTING: The interRAI is a mandatory prerequisite in New Zealand (NZ) for government-funded community support or for entry into aged residential care.
PARTICIPANTS: All 50 years and older people who were assessed using the interRAI in the southern district health board of NZ.
MEASUREMENTS: The age, gender, socially inappropriate or disrupt

Behavioral impulsivity may be a mechanism of hoarding disorder (HD). A commonly used and well-validated measure of impulsivity is the delay and probability discounting task, which consists of making decisions about receiving monetary rewards after varying delay intervals and delivery probabilities. We compared delay and probability discounting and self-reported behavioral impulsivity in 81 patients with a primary diagnosis of HD and 45 nonclinical controls. HD participants completed the impulsivity measures before and after 16 weekly sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), whereas cont

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature indicates that exposure to interpersonal trauma contributes to the onset or exacerbation of hoarding symptoms. However, little research has explored psychosocial factors that may help to explain the relationship between interpersonal trauma and hoarding symptoms. One outcome of trauma exposure that may be associated with hoarding symptoms is aggression, defined as the tendency to experience and express hostility and anger, and to engage in aggressive behavior. Therefore, the current study examined the relationship between hoarding and aggression, as wel

This meta-analysis aimed to identify all studies that have assessed treatment response for pathological hoarding treated with pharmacological agents. Seven studies were identified with a total of 92 participants. Most participants had a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Studies assessed response to serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SRIs); venlafaxine; methylphenidate; and augmentation of SRIs with quetiapine, minocycline and naltrexone. More than half (ER=0.58, 95% CI=0.37-0.76) of the participants treated with pharmacotherapy responded. This study encourages us to consider the use of S

Compared to studies in adults, there have been few studies of hoarding in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In the current study, we evaluated OCD clinical features, Axis I disorders, and social reciprocity scores in 641 children and adolescents with OCD, of whom 163 (25%) had hoarding compulsions and 478 did not. We found that, as a group, youth with hoarding had an earlier age at onset and more severe lifetime OCD symptoms, poorer insight, more difficulty making decisions and completing tasks, and more overall impairment. The hoarding group also had a greater

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive hoarding is a serious health problem for the sufferers, their families, and the community at large. It appears to be highly prevalent and to run in families. However, this familiality could be due to genetic or environmental factors. This study examined the prevalence and heritability of compulsive hoarding in a large sample of twins.
METHOD: A total of 5,022 twins completed a validated measure of compulsive hoarding. The prevalence of severe hoarding was determined using empirically derived cutoffs. Genetic and environmental influences on compulsive hoarding were estima

BACKGROUND: Acquiring and discarding objects are routine decision processes for most people. Despite the ubiquitous need to make such decisions, little is known about how they are made and what goes wrong when individuals acquire and fail to discard so many items that many areas of their home become unlivable (i.e., clinical hoarding). We hypothesize that clinical hoarding reflects a normal variation in the tendency to acquire and retain objects, only just at a more extreme level.
METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we examined 89 nonclinical, undergraduate students' performance on a novel expe

Presented here are two case reports of elderly persons with Diogenes syndrome (variously known as senile breakdown, social breakdown and senile squalor syndrome). Diogenes syndrome is often (but not always) characterized by a tendency to hoard excessively (syllogomania). The first patient was diagnosed as having both a schizotypal personality disorder and obessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) while the second was diagnosed as having a schizoid personality disorder. Only the former demonstrated the tendency to hoard rubbish. The Diogenes syndrome in both cases can be hypothesized to be a reaction

OBJECTIVE: To describe a severe case of hoarding of possessions in a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
CLINICAL PICTURE: A 22-year-old male presented with a history from early childhood of persistent collecting of valueless objects and the inability to give up possessions. He had significant insight but ambivalent feelings about changing his behaviour, despite the degree of disruption it produced in his environment.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Attempts to engage the patient in treatment were unsuccessful because of the patient's ambivalence towards change.
CONCLUSIONS: The symptom of h

OBJECTIVES: Extant research on hoarding has largely taken place in urban settings, preventing generalizations to rural communities. Thus, our objective was to provide a profile of late life rural hoarding.
METHODS: We used data from a survey distributed at community presentations (N = 97) and data from baseline assessments administered as part of larger treatment outcome studies for geriatric hoarding (N = 55).
RESULTS: On the community sample, 33% of participants scored above the clinical cutoff on a brief screening measure. Of the older adults diagnosed with hoarding disorder, 65% lived wi

OBJECTIVE: Hoarding disorder remains underexplored and poorly understood despite its significant impact on individuals and communities. While historically linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), emerging evidence suggests they may be distinct conditions. This study aims to investigate these differences.
METHODS: Adults aged 18-88 years old (M = 39.86, SD = 14.86) were part of the Genomic Psychiatry Cohort study, including 1247 individuals with OCD without presumed hoarding disorder (OCD-pHD) and 663 individuals with OCD and presumed hoarding disorder (OCD+pHD). Sociodemographic data we

The main objective of this preliminary review was to identify studies that investigated extreme forms of animal hoarding in an effort to define the concept of Noah syndrome, recently proposed as the animal variant of Diogenes syndrome. From the 52 scientific articles identified in our search, we included and analyzed 23 manuscripts. The main findings show that persons hoarding animals in squalor tend to be of advanced age and socially isolated, lacking perception of the consequences of their behavior on themselves, their families, and their animals. Neurological and psychiatric conditions, suc
