Imported leishmaniasis is rare in non-endemic countries such as the UK. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) can be life-threatening and its recognition is imperative for successful clinical management. We present a case of VL in an 11-month-old infant several months after returning from a 1-week holiday trip to the South of Spain. The infant suffered from intermittent fever for 5 weeks, and hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopenia, and was successfully treated with a short course of liposomal amphotericin B. With this observation study we aimed to determine how and when sunscreen was used. 20 sun seekers were observed during a one-week sun holiday in Hurghada, Egypt. The sunscreen application thickness was related to part of body, time outdoors, exposure to ultraviolet radiation and to sunburning. Skin sites with sunscreen were exposed to UVR significantly longer and received significantly higher UVR doses than skin sites without sunscreen. BACKGROUND: Due to the worldwide near-extinction of poliovirus infections an acute presentation of poliomyelitis in the Netherlands has become extremely rare. However, in the differential diagnosis of such a disease presentation other pathogens need to be considered as well.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 44-year-old female presented with fever and a flaccid paresis of the left leg, following a holiday in Egypt. The laboratory investigation demonstrated an acute West Nile virus (WNV) infection, after which the diagnosis 'WNV poliomyelitis' was made.

A survey about sunbathing practices was performed on a summer holiday weekend at a Galveston beach. The likelihood of sunburn increased with increasing duration of sun exposure, with 100% of subjects experiencing sunburn after exposure > or = 4.5 hours.
