Background: Hospitalizations of nursing home residents are associated with various health risks. Previous research indicates that, to some extent, hospitalizations of this vulnerable population may be inappropriate and even avoidable. This study aimed to develop a consensus list of hospital discharge diagnoses considered to be nursing home-sensitive, i.e., avoidable. Methods: The study combined analyses of routine data from six statutory health insurance companies in Germany and a two-stage Delphi panel, enhanced by expert workshop discussions, to identify and corroborate relevant diagnoses. OBJECTIVES: Old age is a well-known risk factor for both depression and hypovitaminosis D, and an association between both conditions has been postulated. We document the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in nursing home residents, and we examine the link with self-reported depressive symptoms and pharmacotherapy for depression.
DESIGN: Cross- sectional.
SETTING: nursing homes in Antwerp, Belgium.
PARTICIPANTS: Healthy elderly (n=589), with a mean age of 84 years.
MEASUREMENTS: We detected depressive symptoms by means of SF-36, a validated quality of life assessment; we registered the use

With the changes in China's COVID-19 policies, an increasing number of people have been infected with COVID-19. Elderly residents in nursing homes, due to factors such as advanced age, are considered a vulnerable population. However, there is still a lack of research on the impact on elderly Chinese nursing home residents who have not been infected with COVID-19. Participants were 506 Chinese elderly adults. Psychosocial characteristics were screened by The Perceived Social Support from Family scale (PSS-Fa) for family support, The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) for anxiety

Background: The global increase in the population older than 80 years has led to a paradigm shift centered in the hospital environment, with the inclusion of domiciliary oral health actions improving quality of life. This review evaluates the effects of domiciliary dental care and oral health promotion in nursing homes of older adults. Methods: Seven databases were searched without date restrictions from 15 September to 21 November 2024. A manual search was also performed in the reference lists of the included articles. This research included studies evaluating older adults aged ≥80 years, reg

OBJECTIVES: We conducted a cluster-randomized-controlled trial (cRCT) in 18 German nursing homes (NH) to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of reinstruction and remotivation of nursing staff by dental assistants (DAs) over 13 months.
METHODS: In the intervention arm, dentists examined NH residents, identified oral health conditions, and prescribed individualized oral care interventions. Nursing staff delivered these interventions, with regular follow-up support from DAs (reinstruction and remotivation). In the control group, similar interventions were prescribed via a standardized form, without

PURPOSE: Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) have become a major issue in improving prescribing practices and reducing the risk of adverse drug events in older people. However, very few studies have compared exposition to PIMs controlling for differences in demographic and health between nursing home residents (NHRs) and community-dwelling older adults (CDOAs). This study aimed to assess the prescribing pattern of PIMs between NHRs and CDOAs.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study over three months in 2019 using the French Health Insurance databases. The study population inclu

Recently, customer harassment has attracted considerable attention in various professional fields. Home visits are the basis of public health nurses' activities, but there are few reports on customer harassment during home visits. This study clarified the current situation and factors related to verbal abuse and physical violence experienced from residents during public health nurses' home visits. Data were collected from 80 individuals through a mailed survey of 154 public health nurses employed at 17 health centers in Gifu Prefecture. The survey utilized anonymous and self-administered quest

BACKGROUND: Digitalization in the German health care system is progressing slowly, even though it offers opportunities for improvement of care. In nursing homes, most of the staff's work is paper based. Following the pandemic, there has been a decrease in the use of telemedicine applications. To ensure long-term implementation, the views of users, in this case nurses, are of interest.
OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study was conducted to describe which digital applications are already being used at inpatient care facilities, the attitude of nurses toward telemedicine, and for which areas the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Oral health of older adults in nursing homes is poor, which can negatively affect general health and well-being. Most oral health problems are preventable with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. Caregivers can help improve residents' oral health through regular oral health assessments. The interRAI instrument used in Long-Term Care Facilities to evaluate older adults' health and well-being, has the potential to integrate oral care into general care planning. The recently optimized Oral Health Section for inclusion in the interRAI instruments (OHS-interRA

The purpose of this article is to review the literature on and discuss how interactions between bio-behavioral aging, nursing home environments, and social forces shaping current health care policies have contributed to oral health disparities in frail and functionally dependent elders who reside in nursing homes. Emerging empirical evidence suggests links between poor oral health with dental plaque deposition and systemic disease, such as nursing home-acquired pneumonia. The majority of nursing home residents lack either the functional ability or the mental capacity to perform their own mouth

Determining the value of different post-acute care settings for clinically similar patients is important for providers and payers. This study examines the causal effect of post-acute care (PAC) setting on Medicare spending and short-term patient outcomes among beneficiaries discharged from hospitals following treatment for stroke or congestive heart failure (CHF). Using 2013-2017 Medicare claims data, we implement an instrumental variable strategy that exploits daily variation in skilled nursing facility (SNF) bed occupancy at the hospital service area level to estimate the local average treat

BACKGROUND: Oral health of nursing home residents is generally poor, largely due to age-related conditions that increase their vulnerability and make them more dependent on others for oral care. Poor oral health can significantly impact general health and well-being, highlighting the important role of caregivers in preventing, detecting, and addressing residents' oral health problems in time. The interRAI Suite of instruments, widely used for comprehensive health assessments, offers the opportunity for nondental caregivers to assess oral health as part of general health and well-being and faci
