[Molecular comparison of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolated in Tunisia].

Legionella pneumophila is a common cause of hospital and community-acquired pneumonia, being transmitted by inhalation of aqueous aerosols. Most outbreaks are linked to contaminated hot water systems and cooling towers. Our study was about the molecular typing of 35 strains of L. pneumophila including four clinical isolates and 31 environmental strains isolated from the distribution systems of 14 hotels. Among the clinical strains, two have the same pattern, however, all were different from the studied environmental strains. For the 31 environmental strains, ten patterns were obtained. Among w

Assessment of Red Blood Cell Distribution Width-to-Platelet Count Ratio as a Prognostic Indicator for Acute Pancreatitis Severity and Outcomes: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background Acute pancreatitis (AP) presents with a wide range of severity, from mild to life-threatening disease. Early identification of severe cases is crucial. Traditional prognostic scores such as Ranson's Criteria, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II), and Bedside Index of Severity in Acute Pancreatitis (BISAP) are accurate but complex. The red cell distribution width-to-platelet ratio (RPR), derived from a routine complete blood count (CBC), has emerged as a simple, inexpensive alternative. Methods A prospective observational study was conducted at R.L. Jalappa H

Influence of amoebae and physical and chemical characteristics of water on presence and proliferation of Legionella species in hospital water systems.

The reservoir for hospital-acquired Legionnaires' disease has been shown to be the potable water distribution system. The objectives of the present study were as follows: (1) to examine the possible relationship between physical-chemical characteristics of water such as temperature, pH, hardness, conductivity, and residual chlorine and the presence of amoebae as growth-promoting factors for Legionella species and (2) to determine eradication measures for water distribution systems to seek ways of reducing the risk of legionellosis. Ten hospitals in southwest France took part in this study. Wat

[Prevention of legionellosis in hotel establishments: a proposal to introduce a plan of action in accordance with Provision 13 January 2005 (Italy)].

Provision 13 January 2005 (Italy) gives guidelines for legionellosis control and prevention in hotel and thermal establishments. Considering that Legionella pneumophila is an ubiquitous organism , the implementation of actions to control the risk of Legionella in the water distribution systems of various types of establishments (hospital, hotel, thermal), or to at least reduce it to acceptable levels, is warranted. The authors have prepared a plan of action for Legionella which, besides describing the main points of the provision and the roles of managers and technicians, also includes the dat

[Relation between colonization of hospital water supply by Legionella and risk of infection in patients].

The aim of the study was risk assessment for exposure to legionellae measured by seroreactivity of in-patients and infection in colonized hospitals. Sampling of water from distribution systems of two hospitals (A, B) revealed legionella contamination in 30.7% and 28.3% in the ranges of 10(4)-10(7) CFU/l. The most common isolates were of Legionella pneumophila sp. (L.p.) serotypes L.p.10 and 5 in hospital A, in hospital B L.p.1 (non-Pontiac group) and L.p. 3 (some of tested strains were virulent for guinea pigs). Paired sera of 64 patients from hospital A in the ages of 56 +/- 16.0 taken in the

Role of environmental surveillance in determining the risk of hospital-acquired legionellosis: a national surveillance study with clinical correlations.

OBJECTIVE: Hospital-acquired Legionella pneumonia has a fatality rate of 28%, and the source is the water distribution system. Two prevention strategies have been advocated. One approach to prevention is clinical surveillance for disease without routine environmental monitoring. Another approach recommends environmental monitoring even in the absence of known cases of Legionella pneumonia. We determined the Legionella colonization status of water systems in hospitals to establish whether the results of environmental surveillance correlated with discovery of disease. None of these hospitals had

The San Francisco Health Systems Collaborative: Public Health and Health Care Delivery Systems' Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic challenged health care delivery systems worldwide. Many acute care hospitals in communities that experienced surges in cases and hospitalizations had to make decisions such as rationing scarce resources. Hospitals serving low-income communities, communities of color, and those in other historically marginalized or vulnerable groups reported the greatest operational impacts of surges. However, cross-institutional collaborations within jurisdictions offer unique opportunities to prevent or mitigate health disparities in resource utilization and access to care. In January 20

Epidemiology and healthcare utilization for rectal foreign bodies in United States adults, 2012-2021.

INTRODUCTION: Presentations to the emergency department for rectal foreign bodies are common, but there is little epidemiologic information on this condition. This limits the ability to provide evidence-based education to trainees regarding the populations affected, the types and frequency of foreign bodies, and factors associated with hospitalization. To address this, we analyzed national estimates of emergency department presentations for rectal foreign bodies from 2012 to 2021 in the US. METHODS: We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for any injury to the 'pubic reg
