A review of all cases of nocardiosis in a large hospital in South Florida over the last 6 years was conducted. There were 25 cases of nocardiosis and 76% of them were also infected with HIV. Of the HIV infected patients, all of them had CD4 counts less than 100 cells/mm(3) and most cases were localized in the lungs.

BACKGROUND: Indigent patients in a county hospital setting typically present with breast cancer at a later stage than do patients in the private sector. In the early 1980s, 50% of all breast cancers diagnosed in our county hospital were stages III and IV. This contrasted markedly with the findings of an American College of Surgeons study, which showed < 15% of breast cancers diagnosed as stages III and IV.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Suspected early onset sepsis drives most antibiotic use in the newborn nursery. The Kaiser Sepsis Calculator (KSC) is a validated tool that safely decreases laboratory evaluation and antibiotic administration in infants aged ≥34 weeks. Our quality improvement aim was a nurse-initiated, KSC-based program to decrease blood cultures (BCx) and complete blood counts (CBC) by 10% from March 2021 to October 2021 among chorioamnionitis-exposed infants born ≥35 weeks' gestation. A retrospective cohort study of infant-feeding practices at 6 months of age was conducted for 382 breastfed infants in a semirural northern California county. The frequency of head, face, mouth, and neck injuries due to child maltreatment was investigated in a review of 1248 cases on file in the pediatrics office at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from January, 1985, to December, 1989. There were 485 boys (38.8%) and 763 girls (61.2%) examined. Physical abuse cases (41.0%) outnumbered sexual abuse (35.4%) and neglect episodes (23.6%). The effect of sulphonamides on the incidence of and mortality from puerperal sepsis in a county hospital between 1931 and 1950 was evaluated in a retrospective cohort study. The impact of antibiotics was evaluated by epidemiological methods. The incidence of puerperal sepsis decreased following the introduction of sulphonamides. The risk of contracting puerperal sepsis was reduced 80%. Whereas the fatality rate remained unaffected, patients treated with antibiotics had a significantly shorter duration of fever.

Over a 12-month period, this survey was conducted prospectively to examine the complication rate associated with the insertion and use of central venous catheters on the Louisiana State University Service at Charity Hospital, New Orleans. No attempt was made to alter or influence the current techniques and methods for catheter insertion. Three-hundred and ninety-seven patients received 554 catheters.
