The most frequent traumatic orthopaedic injuries from a national pediatric inpatient population.

Pediatric trauma remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality of children in the United States and entails exorbitant costs. A 1997 national pediatric inpatient database, the Kids' Inpatient Database, was reviewed for current trauma and practice patterns and was found to contain over 84,000 patients admitted for orthopaedic trauma. These patients accrued an estimated 932.8 million dollars in hospital charges. Femur fracture was the most frequent injury among this patient group (21.7% of orthopaedic trauma), followed by tibia and/or fibula fracture (21.5%), humerus fracture (17.0%), radiu

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with retrieval practice on semantic memory in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The semantic processing deficit stands as a central feature of cognitive abnormalities in schizophrenia. Both transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and retrieval practice have been demonstrated as external techniques capable of ameliorating the semantic processing deficit in individuals with schizophrenia. The inquiry examines whether the combined effect of tDCS and retrieval practice, following tDCS intervention targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (L-DLPFC) in patients with schizophrenia, contributes to the preservation of semantic memory in these individual

Emergency department evaluation of febrile children after the introduction of Prevnar.

The Emergency Department work-up of febrile children is largely driven by the risk of occult bacteremia. This study was designed to determine if emergency medicine doctors had changed their work-up of febrile children after introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in 2000. We surveyed 411 licensed emergency doctors in Tennessee in 2001. Participants were presented with a hypothetical eight-month-old, well-appearing child with a temperature of 102.2 degrees F with no source of infection. They were asked about practice setting, years in practice, laboratory evaluation and whether

Whole-genome sequence analysis of multidrug-resistant uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli from Mexico.

Background : Escherichia coli is the main bacterium associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and pyelonephritis. Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) harbors numerous genes that encode diverse virulence factors contributing to its pathogenicity. The treatment of UTIs has become complicated due to the natural selection of E. coli strains that are multiresistant to several groups of antibiotics regularly used in clinical settings such as hospitals. Genomic reports of the global composition and distribution of the antibiotic resistance and virulence genes of these pathogenic st

Hospital variation in responses to safety warnings about power morcellation in hysterectomy.

BACKGROUND: Safety warnings about power morcellation in 2014 considerably changed hysterectomy practice, especially for laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy that typically requires morcellation to remove the corpus uteri while preserving the cervix. Hospitals might vary in how they respond to safety warnings and altered hysterectomy procedures to avoid use of power morcellation. However, there has been little data on how hospitals differ in their practice changes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether hospitals varied in their use of laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy after s

Caregiver perspectives for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of childhood giardiasis in Havana City, Cuba. A qualitative study.

Although long considered a non-pathogenic protozoan, Giardia lamblia is now a well recognized cause of abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea and failure-to-thrive in children. The overall prevalence of this infection in Cuban population is about 7.2%; however, higher prevalences have been found among young children attending day-care centres and primary school in the country. Anecdotally, clinical giardiasis is generally considered to place a large burden on both diagnostic and treatment services in Cuba. In order to gain insight into caregivers' perspectives with respect to this infection in childr
