Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli isolated in the Al-Amiri Hospital in 2003 and compared with isolates from the Farwania hospital outbreak in 1994-96 in Kuwait.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are a major problem in Kuwait and an accurate method for their detection is essential. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of the commercial system (Vitek 2) to identify ESBLs in clinical isolates of Escherichia coli and relate this to their identification by agar dilution methods for use in a diagnostic laboratory. The presence of the major ESBLs parental enzyme groups was confirmed by PCR and the similarity of the strains was determined by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) on DNA, cleaved using XbaI endonuclease, to identify clonal

Linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecium strains isolated from one hospital in Poland -commensals or hospital-adapted pathogens?

One of the most pressing problems of enterococci infections is occurring resistance to linezolid, which is an antibiotic used in the treatment of infections caused by vancomycin-resistant strains (VRE). The main objective of our research was to investigate the relationship of 19 linezolid-resistant E. faecium isolates from 18 patients hospitalized at Clinical Hospital in Gdansk (Poland). One of the LZDREF was isolated in 2003 (K2003), and another 18 were collected from 2013 to 2017. Genotyping with PCR MP method indicated 14 main unrelated genetic profiles and no association with K2003 strain.

Heterogeneity of Candida bloodstream isolates in an academic medical center and affiliated hospitals.

Invasive Candida bloodstream infections (candidemia) are a deadly global health threat. Rare Candida species are becoming increasingly important causes of candidemia. Phenotypic data, including patterns of antifungal drug resistance, are limited. There is a geographic variation in the distribution of Candida species and frequency of antifungal drug resistance, meaning that regional data can have significant clinical value. Here, we report on the species distribution, frequency of antifungal drug resistance, and phenotypic variability of Candida bloodstream isolates from an academic medical cen

Isolation of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa from blood cultures in a tertiary care hospital.

Rhodotorula species have traditionally been considered as one of common non-virulent environmental inhabitant. They have emerged as an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised hosts and most infections have been associated with intravenous catheters in these patients. We review the isolates in blood cultures of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in our Hospital. We describe the demographic and clinical features of the cases and the antifungal susceptibility profiles of the isolates. Selected patients had an isolation of R. mucilaginosa in blood cultures in our tertiary care Hospital. Al

Multidrug-resistant tet(X)-containing hospital isolates in Sierra Leone.

The tet(X) gene encodes a flavin-dependent monooxygenase that confers resistance to all clinically relevant tetracycline antibiotics including tigecycline. It has only previously been identified in environmental and non-human pathogenic bacteria. To investigate levels of multidrug resistance in Bo, Sierra Leone, a molecular epidemiological study was conducted using an antimicrobial resistance determinant microarray (ARDM), PCR and DNA sequencing. The study found that 21% of isolates from Mercy Hospital (Bo, Sierra Leone) were tet(X)-positive, all of which originated from urinary specimens. Use
