Perinatal mortality in a Saudi maternity hospital.

Perinatal mortality was analyzed in infants to mothers who delivered at the main Maternity hospital in Riyadh and who represented a large proportion of the obstetric population in the city. The crude perinatal mortality rate was 39.8 per 1000 births. The birth weight-specific mortality rates were compared with the corresponding Swedish rates. The ratio between the birth weight-specific mortality rates in Riyadh and Sweden increased from the lightest to the heaviest birth weight category. Thus the perinatal mortality rate was 2.3 times higher in infants less than 1500 g, and 8.8 times higher in

Maternal mortality at Goroka Base Hospital.

Over the ten year period 1964-73, the causes of the high maternal mortality rate (21.6/1000) at the Goroka Base Hospital are reviewed. The leading causes of maternal mortality are sepsis and obstructed labour followed by ruptured uterus and abortion. Although it will be difficult to reduce the maternal mortality, some relevant recommendations are made.

Hospital practices in maternity wards in Lebanon.

This study was conducted in Lebanon with the main objectives of acquiring baseline data on practices and routines applied in the obstetrics ward for women having normal delivery; estimating the frequency of certain practices; and assessing whether women are given choice in these practices. A national sample of 39 hospitals was selected. The director, head midwife, or head nurse of the obstetrics department was interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. The hospitals studied are largely equipped to cope with emergencies and services are available 24 hours a day. On average, the caesarea

Severe maternal morbidity and maternal near miss in a tertiary hospital of Delhi.

BACKGROUND: In addition to maternal mortality, information on maternal near miss and severe maternal morbidity are important in maternal healthcare. METHODS: Women admitted with severe maternal morbidity and near miss, as defined by the WHO study group, were included in the study. The incidence ratio of near miss and severe morbidity in the hospital was determined, and a case-cont

Determinants of person-centered maternity care during child birth at the selected hospitals of South Gondar Zone, Northwest Ethiopia: mixed cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Person-centered maternity care (PCMC) is a key component of quality maternal care. It enhances women’s satisfaction and promotes institutional delivery. However, evidence from Ethiopia remains limited. This study assessed the level and determinants of PCMC among women giving birth in public hospitals in South Gondar Zone, Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A mixed-method, cross-sectional study was conducted from November to December 2022 among 405 postpartum women selected through systematic random sampling. Quantitative data were collected using interviewer-administered questionnaires a

Person-centered maternity care and associated factors among women who give birth at public hospitals in South Gondar zone, North West Ethiopia, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Person-centered maternity care (PCMC) is the process of maternity care that is responsive to and respectful of each woman's choices, values, and needs. It reflects the quality of maternal health services. The provision of PCMC is influenced by the maternal sociodemographic and obstetric-related variables However, there is little information about person-centered maternity care in Ethiopia; particularly, communication & autonomy, and supportive care are not well investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the proportion of person-centered maternity care and asso

Determinants of maternal near miss among women admitted to maternity wards of tertiary hospitals in Southern Ethiopia, 2020: A hospital-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: A maternal near-miss (MNM) refers to when a gravely ill woman survives a complication as a result of the standard of care she receives or by chance during gestation, childbirth, or within 42 days of the termination of pregnancy. Rescuers of near-miss events share several features with mothers who have died and identifying MNM determinants will aid in improving the capacity of the health system to reduce severe maternal morbidity and mortality. Ethiopia is one of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa with high maternal mortality and morbidity, but there is little evidence on determina

Hospital obstetric volume and maternal outcomes: Does hospital size matter?

INTRODUCTION: In recent decades, centralization of health care has resulted in a number of obstetric unit closures. While studies support better infant outcomes in larger facilities, few have investigated maternal outcomes. We investigated obstetric unit closures over time and whether obstetric volume is associated with onset of labor, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASIS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: All births registered in Sweden between 1992 and 2019 (Medical Birth Register, N = 2 931 140), linked with data on sociodemographic characteristics and maternal/infan

[Women hospitalized due to abortion in a maternity teaching hospital in Recife, Brazil].

This cross-sectional study was performed with 160 women between 2005-2006. The objective was to describe the social-demographic and reproductive characteristics of women hospitalized due to abortions, and their knowledge about contraceptive methods and abortion induction. In order to determine the association between the abortion classification and social-demographic variables, Pearson's chi-square test was used, with a significance level of 5%. A frequency of 56.3% was found for probably induced abortions. Most cases of abortion occurred before 12 weeks (55.7%). As for the women's profiles: 4

Maternal levels of care and association with severe maternal morbidity during birth hospitalizations.

BACKGROUND: Maternal level of care guidelines were published to facilitate risk-appropriate care and improve outcomes, yet evidence of benefit is lacking. All birth hospitals should be equipped to provide routine childbirth care and be prepared to manage common, treatable childbirth complications. Thus, our objective was to examine the association of maternal level of care with severe maternal morbidity (SMM) without transfusion among 1) all obstetric patients and 2) obstetric patients with common, treatable childbirth complications (e.g., hemorrhage and infection). METHODS: Using a retrospec
