Do the myths still exist? Revisiting people's negative beliefs about organ donation upon death.

The prevalence of myths preventing people partial to donation in Australia from consenting is unknown. Respondents (N = 468: 381 donors, 26 non-donors, 61 undecided) were surveyed about their (negative) donation beliefs. Approximately 30% of donors were neutral or supported negative beliefs about organ allocation, especially donation to undesirable organ recipients and a black market organ trade. Confusion about brain death, lack of family and religious support, and discomfort with donation were negative beliefs endorsed by some respondents irrespective of donor preference. Proportionally, don

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among low-income, African American women with a history of intimate partner violence and suicidal behaviors: self-esteem, social support, and religious coping.

There is a dearth of research on risk/protective factors for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among low-income African American women with a history of intimate partner violence (IPV), presenting for suicidal behavior or routine medical care in a large, urban hospital. We examined self-esteem, social support, and religious coping as mediators between experiences of child maltreatment (CM) and IPV and symptoms of PTSD in a sample (N = 134) of low-income African American women. Instruments used included the Index of Spouse Abuse, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Taylor Self-Esteem Inv

Exploring the relationship between religiosity and coping strategies among individuals with mental illness in Uganda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mental illnesses are leading causes of disability worldwide, and individuals often turn to religion as a source of support and resilience. In Uganda, where religious participation is deeply embedded in society, the influence of religiosity on coping strategies among individuals with mental illnesses remains underexplored. This study examined the relationship between religiosity and coping strategies among people with mental illnesses at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in southwestern Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 adult outpatients at Mbarara Re

The Knights Hospitaller of Rhodes and the Black Death of 1498: a poetic description of the plague.

The study is a presentation of the sole written testimony of the great plague epidemic that struck the island of Rhodes in 1498, at the time when the Order of the Knights of St. John was settled there. The Greek poem "The Thanatikon (i.e., plague) of Rhodes", which was written by Emmanuel Georgillas Limenitis in the late 15th century and recounts the terrible events of the epidemic, was used as a source of information. Among the 644 verses of the poem, elements like the place, time, duration and how the epidemic spread can be identified. Within the historical context of the era, evaluation and

CPE cultural immersion through pairing CPE residents with local religiously diverse families.

This study evaluated a religiously diverse cultural immersion program for clinical pastoral education (CPE) residents at Houston Methodist Hospital System (HM). HM has two cohorts of CPE residents each year, with one at the main hospital and the other at their suburban hospitals. Participants in this qualitative interpretative phenomenological study (IPA) included 20 residents from 2024 and 2025, who were interviewed individually regarding their experiences being paired with a host family from a religion other than their own during their residency. Fifteen themes emerged supporting the concept
