Quality of inpatient test-and-treat malaria case-management in public and private hospitals in Kano State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Compliance with evidence-based treatment guidelines, supported by quality-assured parasitological diagnosis, is the mainstay of malaria case-management in Nigeria. However, despite increased attention, the quality of inpatient paediatric and adult, test-and-treat malaria case-management, and routine accuracy of malaria microscopy, has rarely been examined in public and private hospitals. METHODS: A cross-sectional assessment was undertaken at 18 public and private hospitals in September 2024 in Kano State, Nigeria. Data collection included hospital assessments, interviews with inp

Current state and positive impact of hospital-based blood donor centers in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought tremendous challenges to the United States blood supply. Decreased collections have caused blood product shortages. The number of hospital-based donor centers (HBDCs) has decreased in the past decades, but they provide important support to their hospital systems. MATERIALS/METHODS: We identified 79 active HBDCs through an information request to the FDA. These centers were invited to participate in a survey about their activities, blood product collections, and perceived value. RESULTS: Thirty-six centers responded (46% response rate). The centers

Hospital stays, hospital charges, and in-hospital deaths among infants with selected birth defects--United States, 2003.

Birth defects (BDs) are conditions that 1) result from a malformation, deformation, or disruption in one or more parts of the body; 2) are present at birth; and 3) have a serious, adverse effect on health, development, or functional ability. BDs are leading causes of pediatric hospitalizations, medical expenditures, and infant mortality. To estimate national hospital charges and rates of in-hospital deaths for a greater number of specific BDs than estimated in previous reports, investigators at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and CDC used the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Pro

Hand hygiene in hospitals: an observational study in hospitals from two southern states of India.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is a simple and low-cost measure to reduce healthcare associated infection yet it has always been a concern in low as well as high resource settings across the globe. Poor hand hygiene during intra-partum and newborn care may result in sepsis, which is a major cause of death among newborns and puts a financial burden on already strained health systems. METHODS: We conducted non-participatory observations in newborn care units and labour rooms from secondary and tertiary level, public and private hospitals, as part of a baseline evaluation of a quality improvement coll
