Heart transplantation (HTx) is the ultimate treatment for end-stage heart failure. The number of patients on waiting lists for heart transplants, however, is much higher than the number of available organs. These reductions have been due to a multifocal approach to the collection, processing, and release of blood components. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has been increasingly used for the treatment of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders. Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) is a fatal complication that occurs in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals following blood transfusion.
