User Outcomes for an App-Delivered Hypnosis Intervention for Menopausal Hot Flashes: Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a safe, nonhormonal intervention effective for treating menopausal hot flashes. However, women experiencing hot flashes may face accessibility barriers to in-person hypnotherapy. To solve this issue, a smartphone app has been created to deliver hypnotherapy. The Evia app delivers audio-recorded hypnotherapy and has the potential to help individuals experiencing hot flashes. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine user outcomes in hot flash frequency and severity for users of the Evia app. METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis of a datas

Ovarian metastasis from neuroendocrine tumor presenting as hot flashes: A case report and literature review.

Neuroendocrine metastases to the ovaries are extremely rare, with approximately 100 cases reported in the English literature. The most frequent primary source is a small bowel neuroendocrine tumor (NET), particularly of ileal origin, and patients often present with widespread metastases and carcinoid syndrome. We report the case of a 46-year-old North African woman who presented with hot flashes, motility diarrhea, and a cutaneous rash of the neckline persisting for 3 months, initially misattributed to perimenopause. Imaging revealed bilateral ovarian masses classified as ORADS 4. Surgical exp

Incidence of Hot Flashes among Peri- and Postmenopausal Women in India: A Clinico-demographic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vasomotor symptoms (VMS), such as hot flashes, commonly affect menopausal women aged 40-60 years and can impact the quality of life due to associated sleep disorders and mood changes. These symptoms influenced by various factors including hormonal changes, thermoregulation, and lifestyle exhibit variations in severity. Few studies indicated the prevalence and severity of hot flashes among Indian women and their correlation to body mass index (BMI), menstrual history, marital status, and employment status. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicodemographic

Hot Flashes in Adolescence and Young Adult Females: a Link to Vitamin D and Calcium.

BACKGROUND: Menopause is a stage in life when a woman stops having menstruation and the ovaries produce less estrogen. Hot flashes (HFs) are the classical symptoms for menopausal transition and cessation of menses. Increased anxiety had been reported as a significant risk factor of HFs. Vitamin D deficiency and low daily dietary calcium intake may be associated with the occurrence of hot flashes (HFs) in adolescents and young females that are not related to hormonal changes of menopausal transition. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to validate this hypothesis. METHODS: A case-control stud

Randomized trial of a hypnosis intervention for treatment of hot flashes among breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Hot flashes are a significant problem for many breast cancer survivors. Hot flashes can cause discomfort, disrupted sleep, anxiety, and decreased quality of life. A well-tolerated and effective mind-body treatment for hot flashes would be of great value. On the basis of previous case studies, this study was developed to evaluate the effect of a hypnosis intervention for hot flashes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty female breast cancer survivors with hot flashes were randomly assigned to receive hypnosis intervention (five weekly sessions) or no treatment. Eligible patients had to have a

[The treatment of hot flashes due to menopause. Comparative study of two drugs (author's transl)].

The efficacy of veralipride, a new non-hormonal treatment for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, was evaluated following a randomised comparative study with a commonly used non-hormonal drug, bêta-alanine. Two groups of patients between 53 and 59 years received, one veralipride (22) at a dose of 100 mg/day for 20 days, the other beta-alanine (21) during the same period. 14 patients noted an improvement in their hot flushes while receiving veralipride as against 4 receiving beta-alanine. The superiority of veralipride was quite significant (P less than 0.01). Both products were well tolerate

Trans-ancestry GWAS of hot flashes reveals potent treatment target and overlap with psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Most women experience hot flashes (hot flushes) during the menopause transition. Menopausal hot flashes typically persist for years, and for a sizeable minority of women, are substantially impairing. Genetic investigations can improve understanding of hot flash etiology. METHODS: We conducted a trans-ancestry genome-wide association study (GWAS) of hot flashes (N = 149,560) among post-menopausal women age 35-88. The outcome variable was self-reported hot flashes in four samples (total n = 42,489) and menopausal hormone therapy as a proxy in one sample (n = 107,071). We estimated t

Carbene reactive metabolite explains the hepatotoxicity of the hot flashes drug fezolinetant: A DFT investigation.

Fezolinetant, the first-in-class hot flashes drug, was flagged in September 2024 by US-FDA for liver injury. It is alarming that an FDA-approved drug shows liver toxicity within a year. Fezolinetant's metabolic pathways and metabolites are not disclosed in the FDA label, clinical trial, or other literature reports. This creates a gap in understanding the mechanisms of metabolism and toxicity. In this manuscript, we have investigated novel metabolic pathways that generate reactive metabolites and rationalize hepatotoxicity. Quantum chemical calculations were performed to assess the reactivity o

Beyond Hot Flashes: The Role of Estrogen Receptors in Menopausal Mental Health and Cognitive Decline.

Menopause is a natural phase in a woman's life marked by the cessation of menstruation, typically accompanied by hormonal fluctuations that have significant impacts on physical and mental health. While much attention has been given to the physical symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and osteoporosis, the neurocognitive consequences of hormonal fluctuations during the menopausal transition and the subsequent sustained estrogen loss after menopause have received less focus. Estrogen receptors (ERs), specifically ERα and ERβ, play a critical role in maintaining brain health, influencing mo

Independent Contributions of Nocturnal Hot Flashes and Sleep Disturbance to Depression in Estrogen-Deprived Women.

CONTEXT: Women are at increased risk for mood disturbance during the menopause transition. Hot flashes (HFs), sleep disruption, and fluctuating estradiol levels correlate with menopause-associated depression but co-occur, making cause and effect relationships difficult to disentangle. OBJECTIVE: Using a GnRH agonist (GnRHa) experimental model, we investigated whether depressive symptoms are associated with HFs and/or are explained by concomitant sleep fragmentation in the absence of estradiol fluctuation. DESIGN AND INTERVENTION: Depressive symptoms, objective polysomnographic sleep paramete

Evaluating the role of serotonin in hot flashes after breast cancer using acute tryptophan depletion.

OBJECTIVE: Among women with breast cancer, hot flashes are frequent, severe, and bothersome symptoms that can negatively impact quality of life and compromise compliance with life-saving medications (eg, tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors). Clinicians' abilities to treat hot flashes are limited due to inadequate understanding of physiological mechanisms involved in hot flashes. Using an acute tryptophan depletion paradigm, we tested whether alterations in central serotonin levels were involved in the induction of hot flashes in women with breast cancer. METHODS: This was a within-participant,

Venlafaxine in management of hot flashes in survivors of breast cancer: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hot flashes can be troublesome, especially when hormonal therapy is contraindicated. Preliminary data have suggested that newer antidepressants, such as venlafaxine, can diminish hot flashes. We undertook a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised trial to assess the efficacy of venlafaxine in women with a history of breast cancer or reluctance to take hormonal treatment because of fear of breast cancer. METHODS: Participants were assigned placebo (n=56) or venlafaxine 37.5 mg daily (n=56), 75 mg daily (n=55), or 150 mg daily (n=54). After a baseline assessment week, patients

A Within-Subject Model of Hot Flash-Like Symptoms in Aged Rats.

Hot flashes are a common vasomotor symptom (VMS) experienced by postmenopausal women. In rodents, VMS-like symptoms can be assessed by monitoring tail skin temperature (TST), which reflects thermoregulatory changes. However, because the TST is highly sensitive to handling and environmental stresses, a reliable assessment requires continuous monitoring under low-stress and unrestrained conditions. In this study, we established a monitoring system for aged Wistar rats and evaluated hot flash-like symptoms using a within-subjects design across four physiological states: intact, ovariectomized (OV

Changes in hot flash experiences and related factors in women with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Taiwanese women are younger than women in western countries when diagnosed with breast cancer, and many of them are still menstruating. One of many distressing side effects reported by premenopausal women treated for breast cancer are hot flashes (HFs). The purposes of this study were to identify: (1) the trajectories of hot flash (HF) occurrence, frequency, and interference and (2) potential factors associated with HF changes. METHODS: Peri- or premenopausal women newly diagnosed with breast cancer scheduled to receive chemotherapy and hormonal therapy were enrolled. HF frequency,
