Toxicity, behavioural and biochemical effect of Piper betle L. essential oil and its constituents against housefly, Musca domestica L.

Housefly, Musca domestica L. is a pest of public health importance and is responsible for spreading diseases like typhoid, diarrhoea, plague etc. Indiscriminate reliance on synthetic insecticides has led to development of insecticide resistance and ill effect to humans and nontarget animals. This demands an alternative and safer pest control option. This study evaluates the biological effect of Piper betle L essential oil and its constituent eugenol, eugenol acetate, and β - caryophyllene on the housefly. The major components present in P. betel EO were safrole (44.25%), eugenol (5.16%), β -ca

Evaluation of housefly (Musca domestica) larvae meal and frass as alternative protein sources in late-phase laying hens: Effects on ileal digestibility and energy utilization.

The present study evaluated the effects of housefly (Musca domestica) larvae meal (HFLM) and housefly larvae plus frass (HFLF), with or without a commercial synbiotic-enzyme supplement, on apparent ileal nutrient digestibility and apparent ileal digestible energy (AIDE) in Lohmann LSL-Lite laying hens. Two 10-week feeding trials were conducted, each involving 192 hens at 56 weeks of age, using a 4 × 2 factorial design with four inclusion levels (0, 5, 10, and 15%) of HFLM or HFLF and two synbiotic-enzyme supplementation levels (0 and 0.05%). In Experiment 1, HFLM inclusion did not affect nutri

An optimal control problem for carrier dependent diseases.

In developing countries, several diseases spread in human population due to the abundance of houseflies (a kind of carrier). The main reason behind the spread of these diseases is the lack of awareness among peoples regarding the sanitation practices and economic constraints. To understand the dynamics of the spread and control of these diseases, in this paper, we propose a mathematical model by considering logistic growth of houseflies. In the model formulation, it is assumed that houseflies transport the bacteria responsible for the disease transmission from the environment to the edibles of

Protein-enriched extracts from housefly (Musca domestica) maggots alleviates atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice by promoting bile acid production and consequent cholesterol consumption.

Currently, atherosclerosis control is important to prevent future heart attacks or strokes. Protein-enriched extract (PE) from housefly maggots (Musca domestica) can inhibit the development of atherosclerosis partially through its antioxidant effects. Whether PE exerts other anti-atherosclerosis functions remains unclear. Here, PE was found to simultaneously promote cholesterol metabolism effects in apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE-/- ) mice. Bile acid synthesis plays a key role in regulating cholesterol homeostasis in atherosclerosis. Whether PE alleviates atherosclerosis by promoting bile aci

Efficacy of the Volatile Oil from Water Celery (Helosciadium nodiflorum, Apiaceae) against the Filariasis Vector Culex quinquefasciatus, the Housefly Musca domestica, and the African Cotton Leafworm Spodoptera littoralis.

Water celery (Helosciadium nodiflorum, Apiaceae) is a common and invasive hydrophyte occurring in rivers and slow waters of Europe. In the past, it was consumed as a vegetable and spices, but currently it has mostly been abandoned. As a result, this plant produces an unexploited biomass occluding rivers and slow waters. With the aim to valorise water celery as an important biomass source for the development of botanical insecticides, in this work, we investigated the inhibitory effects of the essential oil hydrodistilled from its aerial parts against larvae of the filariasis vector Culex quinq

Aerobic and facultative anaerobic Klebsiella pneumoniae strains establish mutual competition and jointly promote Musca domestica development.

INTRODUCTION: The gut microenvironment in housefly harbors a rich and diverse microbial community which plays a crucial role in larval development. However, little is known about the impact of specific symbiotic bacteria on larval development as well as the composition of the indigenous gut microbiota of housefly. METHODS: In the present study, two novel strains were isolated from housefly larval gut, i.e., Klebsiella pneumoniae KX (aerobe) and K. pneumoniae KY (facultative anaerobe). Moreover, the bacteriophages KXP/KYP specific for strains KX and KY were used to analyse the effects of K. pn

Laboratory investigations into the role of Musca vicina and Musca domestica in the transmission of parasitic helminth eggs and larvae.

Musca vicina and M. domestica were induced to feed on stools containing eggs of hook worm and Ascaris lumbricoides and on infective larvae of the parasites. The development periods of the regurgitated eggs were observed while attempts were made to recover the ingested larvae through regurgitation. Results showed no difference between the developmental periods of eggs of hookworm and A. lumbricoides recovered from the houseflies up to 2 hours post ingestion and eggs of the same parasites which were not fed to the houseflies. In the case of infective larvae of hookworm, almost all experimental f

t-[35S]butylbicyclophosphorothionate binding sites in invertebrate tissues.

Specific high affinity binding of the cage convulsant t-[35S]butylbicyclophosphorothionate (TBPS) was observed in membrane homogenates of housefly heads and crayfish abdominal muscles. [35S]TBPS binding in these two invertebrate tissues was inhibited by biologically active cage convulsants, picrotoxin analogs, and barbiturates. The housefly binding sites were inhibited most potently by several insecticides. Approximately 50% of total binding was displaceable by excess (0.1 mM) nonradioactive TBPS, picrotoxinin, ethyl bicyclophosphate, or dieldrin. Optimal binding assay conditions for housefly

Coevolution of hytrosaviruses and host immune responses.

BACKGROUND: Hytrosaviruses (SGHVs; Hytrosaviridae family) are double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses that cause salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) syndrome in flies. Two structurally and functionally distinct SGHVs are recognized; Glossina pallidipes SGHV (GpSGHV) and Musca domestica SGHV (MdSGHV), that infect the hematophagous tsetse fly and the filth-feeding housefly, respectively. Genome sizes and gene contents of GpSGHV (~ 190 kb; 160-174 genes) and MdSGHV (~ 124 kb; 108 genes) may reflect an evolution with the SGHV-hosts resulting in differences in pathobiology. Whereas GpSGHV can switch from

Polydatin attenuates cadmium-induced oxidative stress via stimulating SOD activity and regulating mitochondrial function in Musca domestica larvae.

Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environment contaminant due to the development of electroplating and metallurgical industry. Cd can be enriched by organisms via food chain, causing the enlarged environmental problems and posing threats to the health of humans. Polydatin (PD), a natural stilbenoid compound derived from Polygonum cuspidatum, shows pronouncedly curative effect on oxidative damage. In this work, the protective effects of PD on oxidative damage induced by Cd in Musca domestica (housefly) larvae were evaluated. The larvae were exposed to Cd and/or PD, subsequently, the oxidative stress

Entomopathogenic potential of Verticillium and Acremonium species (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes).

Hyphomycetes with conidia formed in slimy heads from hyaline mycelium were isolated from a range of insect hosts. Isolation on artificial medium and microscopic examination revealed that these fungi in many cases were not Verticillium lecanii despite a superficial resemblance to this common entomopathogen. The fungi were identified as Verticillium fusisporum, Verticillium psalliotae, Verticillium lamellicola, and species of Acremonium. Isolates of these fungi were bioassayed against the sweet-potato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and against the housefly (Musca domestica) to examine their entomopat

[Remarks on the morphology of forensically significant fly maggots].

For medico-legal purposes, usually as an aid in establishing the time of death, it is considered essential for forensic pathologists to have detailed entomological knowledge regarding the recognition and classification of several types of flies and their maggots, including the families of Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Sarcophagidae. We try to deal with the description of external and internal morphology of cyclorrhaphous maggots, the biology and lifecycles of blowflies, houseflies and fleshflies.

The role of flies in spreading the extended-spectrum β-lactamase gene from cattle.

The spreading of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and genes from food-producing animals to humans has been a subject of increasing concern. To clarify the role of flies in spreading the extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) gene from food-producing animals to humans, we isolated and characterized a third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli strain from flies and cattle feces from a cattle barn. Cephalosporin-resistant strains were isolated from 14.3% (13/91) of houseflies, 10.3% (7/68) of false stable flies, and 7.5% (7/93) of cattle feces. Twenty-seven cephalosporin-resistant st

Cryopreservation of Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) embryos.

Prior studies on cryopreserving embryos of several non-drosophilid flies established that two Drosophila melanogaster embryo cryopreservation protocols were not directly suitable for use with these species. This paper describes our work on developing a protocol for cryopreservation of embryos of the housefly, Musca domestica. Significant progress was made when permeabilization of the vitelline membrane was optimized, a vitrification solution containing ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, and trehalose was formulated, and when cooling and recovery of the cryopreservation protocol included a s

Extensive gingival myiasis - Diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Myiasis is a rare disease primarily caused by infestation of tissue by larvae of houseflies. Oral myiasis is still more "rare" and "unique" owing to the fact that oral cavity rarely provides the necessary habitat conducive for a larval lifecycle. Here we report a case of extensive gingival myiasis, in an 81-year-old female patient, diagnosed and treated successfully in our department. The case is discussed in relation to its clinical presentation, etiopathogenesis, management, and prognosis.

Characterization and some properties of the venom gland extract of a theridiid spider (Steatoda paykulliana) frequently mistaken for black widow spider (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus).

The simplified purification protocol established for the isolation of alpha-latrotoxin from the venom of the spider Latrodectus tredecimguttatus, has been employed for the purification of toxic components present in the venom of the spider Steatoda paykulliana. The venom of this spider, frequently mistaken for L. tredecimguttatus, is by tradition considered to cause an envenomation potentially dangerous to man. The venom of S. paykulliana has little toxic effect on guinea-pigs but is extremely toxic to houseflies (Musca domestica). No proteolytic activity was detectable. Interaction of microgr
