Asthma and respiratory symptoms in hospital workers related to dampness and biological contaminants.

UNLABELLED: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigated respiratory symptoms and asthma in relation to damp indoor environments in employees of two hospitals. A cluster of six work-related asthma cases from one hospital department, whose symptoms arose during a time of significant water incursions, led us to conduct a survey of respiratory health in 1171/1834 employees working in the sentinel cases hospital and a nearby hospital without known indoor environmental concerns. We carried out observational assessment of dampness, air, chair, and floor dust sampling for bi

Environmental surveillance and molecular epidemiology of waterborne pathogen Legionella pneumophila in health-care facilities of Northeastern Greece: a 4-year survey.

A 4-year proactive environmental surveillance of Legionella spp. in the water distribution and cooling systems of five health-care facilities was carried out as part of the strategy for the prevention of hospital-acquired Legionnaires' disease in Northeastern Greece. Legionella spp. were detected in 71 out of 458 collected samples. The majority of strains belonged to Legionella pneumophila serogroups 2-15 (75.0%), while all L. pneumophila serogroup 1 strains (23.6%) were isolated from a single hospital. The highest percentage of positive samples was found in distal sites (19.4%), while no Legi

Work-related respiratory symptoms among health centres cleaners: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies, mostly based on questionnaire-derived data, have shown an increased risk of allergic diseases, especially asthma, among cleaners. The risk factors and etiological mechanisms are still being investigated. Occupational exposure to various chemical and biological agents may induce specific sensitization and/or irritant effects. The aim of our study was to estimate the prevalence of work-related symptoms suggesting the presence of allergic disease reported by cleaners, and to relate them to the results of commercially available and standardized objective tests used for

[From administrator to laundrymaid - aspects of the conditions of the staff at the Municipal Hospital of Copenhagen (Kommunehospital) after the opening in 1863].

The opening of the biggest and most advanced Danish municipal hospital of its time took place on the 19th of September 1863 in the city of Copenhagen. The hospital had the capacity to host about 700 patients and was equipped with modern facilities such as water closets, electricity, running water and baths. The daily routines at this large institution had to be throughly organized. This article focuses on the working environment, the rights and duties of the staff and its hierarchical structure. From the historical source material we have been able to classify the staff members into five diffe

Risk reduction through testing, screening and infection control precautions--with special emphasis on needlestick injuries.

Transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pose substantial risks to institutional healthcare employees working with blood. While the risk of contracting hepatitis B in the hospital setting is much greater than the probability of acquiring HIV, the cost of treating the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)--if it develops--is much greater in both dollars and human suffering. In addition to the risks posed by the presence of HIV infection in the hospital increase daily. By the end of 1990, one of every 14 hospitalized patients will be an HIV carrier.

Workplace-related traumatic injuries: insights from a rapidly developing Middle Eastern country.

Traumatic workplace-related injuries (WRIs) carry a substantial negative impact on the public health worldwide. We aimed to study the incidence and outcomes of WRIs in Qatar. We conducted occupational injury surveillance for all WRI patients between 2010 and 2012. A total of 5152 patients were admitted to the level 1 trauma unit in Qatar, of which 1496 (29%) sustained WRI with a mean age of 34.3 ± 10.3. Fall from height (FFH) (51%) followed by being struck by heavy objects (FHO) (18%) and motor vehicle crashes (MVC) (17%) was the commonest mechanism of injury (MOI). WRI patients were mainly la

ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae: controlling the spread of infection.

Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae were first reported in Europe in the 1980s and have since become a worldwide problem. This has resulted in increased morbidity, mortality and cost in treating the infections they cause (Paterson et al, 2001; Bisson et al, 2002). In the UK the prevalence of ESBL rose from 5.4% in 1997 to 22.7% in 1999 (Goossens, 2000). ESBL are not the only beta-lactamases to present resistance to 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation cephalosporins but are the most important. New strains produce a particular type of ESBL, the CTX-M type, which is able

Molecular investigation of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from inanimate surfaces in Jordanian hospitals.

Staphylococcus aureus is a ubiquitous nosocomial bacterium, which confers hospital-associated infections ranging from moderate to life-threatening disorders. The pathogenicity of the microorganism is attributed to various camouflage mechanisms harbored in its genome. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains have become significant pathogens in nosocomial and community settings. In the current study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of S. aureus, and more specifically, MRSA at different departments in four major hospitals in Jordan. A total of 500 inanimate surfaces located in th
