Ex vivo humidifying capacity and patient acceptability of stoma cloths in laryngectomized individuals.

BACKGROUND: Heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs) improve respiratory function after laryngectomy, but there is virtually no information on the benefit of traditional stoma cloths or other covers. METHODS: Two sequential studies were performed: (1) an ex vivo test was used to compare the humidifying capacity of stoma cloths to other coverings; and (2) a 4-week randomized trial was then performed to assess patient acceptability of cloths both alone and with an HME (N = 18). RESULTS: The humidifying capacity of the coverings tested varied widely. For stoma cloths, a humidifying capacity of 13.7

Respiratory support with heated humidified high flow nasal cannula in preterm infants.

The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has not decreased over the last decade. The most important way to decrease BPD is by weaning the patient from the ventilator as soon as possible in order to reduce ventilator-induced lung injury that underlies BPD, and by using a noninvasive ventilator (NIV). Use of a heated, humidified, high flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC), which is the most recently introduced NIV mode for respiratory support in preterm infants, is rapidly increasing in many neonatal intensive care units due to the technical ease of use without sealing, and the attending physicia

Peritoneal Tumorigenesis and Inflammation are Ameliorated by Humidified-Warm Carbon Dioxide Insufflation in the Mouse.

BACKGROUND: Conventional laparoscopic surgery uses CO2 that is dry and cold, which can damage peritoneal surfaces. It is speculated that disseminated cancer cells may adhere to such damaged peritoneum and metastasize. We hypothesized that insufflation using humidified-warm CO2, which has been shown to reduce mesothelial damage, will also ameliorate peritoneal inflammation and tumor cell implantation compared to conventional dry-cold CO2. METHODS: Laparoscopic insufflation was modeled in mice along with anesthesia and ventilation. Entry and exit ports were introduced to maintain insufflation u

[High flow, humidified-reheated oxygen therapy: a new oxygenation technique for adults].

Currently conventional oxygen therapy is the first choice symptomatic treatment in the management of acute respiratory failure (ARF). However, conventional oxygen therapy has important limitations which have lead to the development of heated and humidified high-flow nasal oxygen therapy (HFNO). HFNO is an innovative technique that can deliver, through special nasal cannulae, up to 100% of the inspired fraction (FiO2) with heated and humidified oxygen at a maximum flow of 70L/min. The characteristics of this technique (overcoming the patient's spontaneous inspiratory flow, heated humidification

Physiological effects of heated humidifiers versus heat and moisture exchangers in adult ARDS patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), increased dead space with Heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs) may impair carbon dioxide elimination during lung-protective ventilation. To assess its impact, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: After registration with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD420261368917), PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus were searched for studies of ARDS patients receiving IMV comparing HHs and HMEs. Random-effects meta-analyses of paired physiological outcomes were conducted using inverse-variance models, a

Humidifier disinfectant, sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC): assessment of respiratory effects to protect workers' health.

In South Korea, it has been found that biocides used to control and eliminate harmful organisms are used as humidifier disinfectants and cause lung disease in users. Hence, efforts have been focused on studying the toxicity of biocides in workers who handle them. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of inhalation exposure to sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) to protect the health of workers handling NaDCC. F344 rats were exposed to 0.8-, 4-, and 20-mg/m3 of NaDCC for 6 h per day, 5 days per week for 14 days, and the recovery period after exposure was 14 days. In the 20-mg/m3

The Role of Heated Humidified High-flow Nasal Cannula as Noninvasive Respiratory Support in Neonates.

Recently, heated humidified high-flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC) has been introduced and applied as a noninvasive respiratory support in neonates. Although HHHFNC is widely used in neonates presenting with respiratory distress, the efficiency and safety when compared with nasal continuous positive airway pressure or noninvasive positive pressure ventilation are still controversial. This review aims to evaluate the performance and applications of HHHFNC in neonates.

Heated Humidified High-Flow Nasal Oxygen in Adults: Mechanisms of Action and Clinical Implications.

Traditionally, nasal oxygen therapy has been delivered at low flows through nasal cannulae. In recent years, nasal cannulae designed to administer heated and humidified air/oxygen mixtures at high flows (up to 60 L/min) have been gaining popularity. These high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) systems enhance patient comfort and tolerance compared with traditional high-flow oxygenation systems, such as nasal masks and nonrebreathing systems. By delivering higher flow rates, HFNC systems are less apt than traditional oxygenation systems to permit entrainment of room air during patient inspiration. Comb

Quantifying serum antibody class and subclass responses by enzyme immunoassay in humidifier-related disease.

Antibody activity in the major classes and IgG subclasses against antigens in factory humidifier water was quantified by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) in 88 subjects who were exposed at work to the output from these contaminated humidifiers. Those with work-related symptoms had significantly higher mean titres than those who were symptom free, although values overlapped. The individuals with the highest IgG antibody titres also had the highest titres of IgM and IgA antibody, and these parameters did not discriminate between those with and without symptoms any better than the IgG titre. This was als

Transnasal Humidified Rapid-Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange During Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: In electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a generalized seizure is provoked under general anesthesia. Standard airway management is done by face mask ventilation, but this is difficult during generalized seizure. Transnasal humidified rapid-insufflation ventilatory exchange (THRIVE) is a method to increase apnea tolerance and permit apnea oxygenation. We hypothesize that THRIVE can oxygenate the patient during ECT and that it is comfortable for patients. METHODS: In this single-center feasibility study, 13 patients with a pharmacotherapy-resistant depressive disorder underwent 20 ECT se
