Microstructure-Dependent Rotational Wear of Dental Glass-Ceramics Under Low Humidity.

Background: The wear resistance of modern commercial glass-ceramic materials used in dental prostheses was investigated under cyclic contact conditions that included a rotational component. This loading mode has been largely overlooked in conventional in vitro wear testing, yet may be clinically relevant in patients with parafunctional conditions such as bruxism. Methods: Rotational loading was applied using an all-electric testing machine equipped with a biaxial actuator. Loading cycles combined a normal load (50 N) and a rotation (30°), at a frequency of 1 Hz. Microstructure and damage were

Effect of humidity on microwave-based direct air capture under fluidization.

This study explores the effect of humidity on CO2 desorption from a microwave-assisted direct air capture system using Zeolite 13X as a sorbent. Relative humidity of air varied from 25 % to 75 % at room temperature in adsorption. The experiments were performed to investigate potential impacts of water molecules in air, where several adsorption paths (path 1, path 2, and path 3) were developed to mitigate these effects. Adsorption time varied between 30 and 100 min for the proposed adsorption paths. In desorption, a mono-mode microwave unit was used due to its ability of rapid and volumetric he

Colorimetric Fabry-Pérot Sensor with Hetero-Structured Dielectric for Humidity Monitoring.

A full-color colorimetric humidity sensor with high brightness is proposed by using a hetero-structured dielectric film in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) resonator. A humidity-responsive polymer is designed to graft on top of a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) thin film (MOFs-Polymer) as insulator layer in the resonator. Programmable tuning of reflected color is achieved by controlling the polymer thicknesses, and finite difference time domain simulation of light-matter interactions at subwavelength scales proves the dependence of the reflected wavelength on dielectric layer thickness of the res

Strong and tough polysaccharide organohydrogels for strain, humidity and temperature sensors.

To avoid the potential toxicity of monomer residues in synthetic polymer based organohydrogels, natural polysaccharide-based organohydrogels are expected to be used in multi-functional wearable sensory systems, but most of them have unsatisfactory stiffness, strength and fracture toughness. Herein, a cooking and soaking strategy is proposed to prepare novel natural polysaccharide-based organohydrogels possessing outstanding stiffness, strength, toughness, freezing resistance, heating resistance and long-term durability. The agar organohydrogel exhibits a fracture stress of 3.3 MPa, a Young's m

Room Temperature Humidity Tolerant Xylene Sensor Using a Sn-SnO2 Nanocomposite.

Xylene is one of the representative indoor pollutants, even in ppb levels, that affect human health directly. Due to the non-polar and less reactive nature of xylene, its room temperature detection is challenging. This work demonstrates a metallic tin-doped Sn-SnO2 nanocomposite under controlled pH conditions via a simple solvothermal route. The Sn nanoparticles are uniformly distributed inside the SnO2 nanospheres of ∼70 nm with a high specific surface area of 118.8 m2/g. The surface of the Sn-SnO2 nanocomposite exhibits strong affinity toward benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX)

Fabrication of polyaniline/graphene oxide composites for implementation in humidity sensing.

This work reports the measurement of impedance variations under various humidity conditions at frequency ranges between 100 Hz and 5 MHz. An electrochemical polymerization process has been used in the synthesis including varying the mass ratios of graphene oxide (GO) in polyaniline. An electrochemical deposition method has been used to produce a sample film on an indium tin oxide glass slide. The percentage relative humidity (RH%) of the samples has been estimated to be 20-90%. Impedance and humidity had an inverse relationship, i.e. the impedance value decreased with an increase in humidity.

Association of melioidosis incidence with rainfall and humidity, Singapore, 2003-2012.

Soil has been considered the natural reservoir for the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, which causes melioidosis. We examined 550 melioidosis cases that occurred during a 10-year period in the highly urbanized city of Singapore, where soil exposure is rare, and found that rainfall and humidity levels were associated with disease incidence.

Using goggles to increase periocular humidity and reduce dry eye symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of goggles to increase periocular humidity and reduce dry eye symptoms. METHODS: Noncontact lens wearing patients, previously diagnosed with and symptomatic for dry eye, were recruited. All patients, test (n = 100) and control (n = 25) patients, were required to fill out a simple questionnaire to assess their ocular comfort at three time points during the study: immediately before wearing goggles, after 20 minutes of continuous goggle wear, and 15 minutes after the goggles were removed. The test group consisted of 100 patients who wore swim goggles. The rando

Fluctuations in relative humidity provided to extremely low-birthweight infants (R1).

BACKGROUND: In extremely low-birthweight infants, the addition of relative humidity (RH) improves thermal stability, fluid and electrolyte balance. However, during routine care this microenvironment is frequently disturbed. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency, magnitude and direction of fluctuations in RH provided to extremely low-birthweight infants. METHODS: All infants in our study had ambient temperature and RH continuously recorded for 48 h using a datalogger device (RH32S-C2). A clinically acceptable range for RH was defined as the set point ± 10%. A secondary ana

Prenatal exposure to heat and humidity and infant birth size in Ghana.

Previous studies - primarily in high income countries - have shown that high prenatal temperatures are associated with adverse birth outcomes. However, these studies are mostly focused on average exposure across the full gestational period or short-term exposure immediately prior to delivery and may miss important sensitive windows of exposure in utero. Further, nearly all use ambient air temperature data, which neglect physiologically important interactions between air temperature and humidity. The Ghana Randomized Air Pollution and Health Study (GRAPHS) recruited pregnant individuals from 20

Effect of relative humidity on the desulfurization performance of calcium-based desulfurizer.

Low desulfurization efficiency impedes the wide application of dry desulfurization technology, which is a low-cost and simple process, and one significant solution is the development and manufacture of high-performance desulfurizers. In this study, firstly, a steam jet mill was used to digest quicklime; then, we utilized numerical simulation to study the flow field distribution and analyze the driving factors of quicklime digestion; and lastly, the desulfurization performance of the desulfurizer was evaluated under different relative humidities. The results show that the desulfurizer prepared

Impact of aerial humidity on seasonal malaria: an ecological study in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal patterns of malaria cases in many parts of Africa are generally associated with rainfall, yet in the dry seasons, malaria transmission declines but does not always cease. It is important to understand what conditions support these periodic cases. Aerial moisture is thought to be important for mosquito survival and ability to forage, but its role during the dry seasons has not been well studied. During the dry season aerial moisture is minimal, but intermittent periods may arise from the transpiration of peri-domestic trees or from some other sources in the environment. The

Effects of temperature and humidity on peritonsillar abscess volume of emergency patients.

Climate and temperature have long been considered in relation to human diseases and mortality. In this study, we investigated whether daily temperature and humidity and patients' personal history affect the volume of peritonsillar abscesses (PTAs). We included 52 patients with PTAs who were admitted to the emergency department of the study hospital; their computed tomography data were analyzed, and PTA volume was measured. We investigated the possible correlation between PTA volume and mean/minimum/maximum temperature and humidity. Furthermore, we obtained personal history data, including info

Humidity-A Powerful Tool to Customize the Physical Properties of Molecular Magnets.

Since the dawn of the century, people have been fascinated by the mysterious force that draws two pieces of lodestone (magnetite, Fe3 O4 ) to each other as well as by property of stilbite (natural zeolite, NaCa4 [Si27 Al9 O72 ]⋅28 H2 O) to generate huge amounts of steam by rapidly heating the material. Nowadays, we know the first effect is addressed by magnetic attraction whereas the second one is related to the reversible sorption/desorption of water from humid air inside porous materials. For a long time, it was thought that these two, at first glance, were disjunctive properties that cannot

Small ruminant production in the humid tropical zone of southern Nigeria.

A study was made of village goat and sheep production systems in the humid tropical zone of south-west Nigeria. A summary of the herd and flock population dynamics is given followed by a discussion of the importance of goat and sheep production in southern Nigeria and suggestions for methods of improvement. The problems of livestock production in areas of endemic trypanosomiasis are discussed and it is concluded that, where cattle are excluded due to this disease and where human population pressure is high, goats and sheep have a continuing and increasing role to play in providing meat for the

Influence of salts on the microbial activity in arid and simi-humid soils.

The influence of salt mixtures consisting of Ca (H2PO4)2, trace elements, CaSO4, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaCl, and K2SO4 in different combinations on the nitrifying power, evolution of carbon dioxide, and the total number of bacteria was studied in arid soils (sandy and alluvial) and semi-humid ones (chernozem and rendzina). Salt mixtures comprising either monocalcium phosphate or sodium chloride showed highly inhibiting action on the studied microbial activities in sandy, alluvial, and chernozem soils, while monocalcium phosphate stimulated the heterotrophs of rendzina. Trace elements favoured the aut
