Chest wall necrosis and death secondary to hydrochloric acid infusion for metabolic alkalosis.

Central line complications are common, and extravasation injuries related to infusion of caustic substances have been previously described. Although hydrochloric acid has been used for many years to treat metabolic alkalosis, there have been no reported fatal complications. We report the case of a 53-year-old female who received a fatal chemical burn due to extravasation from a subclavian central venous catheter of hydrochloric acid infused to correct severe metabolic alkalosis. This case illustrates the hazards of the infusion of caustic substances through central lines and underscores the im

Reactive airways dysfunction syndrome in housewives due to a bleach-hydrochloric acid mixture.

The sudden onset of asthmalike symptoms and persistence of airway reactivity following an acute exposure to an irritant gas or vapor has been termed reactive airways dysfunction syndrome (RADS). A mixture of sodium hypochlorite (bleach, 40%) and hydrochloric acid (18%) is commonly used as a household cleaning solution in our region. From this mixture, chlorine gas is produced, which can cause airway damage and ensuing RADS. Here we describe findings of patients with RADS due to this cleaning mixture, and determine factors associated with a favorable outcome. Data were collected retrospectively

Croton lechleri Extracts as Green Corrosion Inhibitors of Admiralty Brass in Hydrochloric Acid.

Croton lechleri, commonly known as Dragon's blood, is a tree cultivated in the northwest Amazon rainforest of Ecuador and Peru. This tree produces a deep red latex which is composed of different natural products such as phenolic compounds, alkaloids, and others. The chemical structures of these natural products found in C. lechleri latex are promising corrosion inhibitors of admiralty brass (AB), due to the number of heteroatoms and π structures. In this work, three different extracts of C. lechleri latex were obtained, characterized phytochemically, and employed as novel green corrosion inhib

A Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid-based Method for Complete Recovery of DNA from Bone.

The successful extraction of DNA from historical or ancient animal bone is important for the analysis of discriminating genetic markers. Methods used currently rely on the digestion of bone with EDTA and proteinase K, followed by purification with phenol/chloroform and silica bed binding. We have developed a simple concentrated hydrochloric acid-based method that precludes the use of phenol/chloroform purification and can lead to a several-fold increase in DNA yield when compared to other commonly used methods. Concentrated hydrochloric acid was shown to dissolve most of the undigested bone an

Intravenous lidocaine attenuates acute lung injury induced by hydrochloric acid aspiration in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophils play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of acid-induced acute lung injury. Lidocaine inhibits the function of neutrophils. This study aimed to determine whether lidocaine attenuates acute lung injury induced by hydrochloric acid (HCl) instillation. METHODS: In study 1, rabbits were divided into four groups (n = 7 each). Lung injury was induced by intratracheal HCl (0.1 N, 3 ml/kg) in two groups. The other two groups received saline intratracheally. Lidocaine given intravenously (2 mg/ g bolus + 2 mg x kg(-1) x h(-1) infusion) was started 10 min before intratracheal ins

The effect of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid on pig dermis. A light microscopic study.

In order to compare the dermal changes after exposure to direct current (d.c.) with changes after influence of acid and base influence, the skin of fully anaesthetized Danish Landrace pigs were exposed to acid and basic solutions. Biopsies were obtained immediately after and up to day 7 after the injury. Collagen fibres with increased affinity for eosin and irregular cross-striation in polarized light together with shrunken cells with dark stained nuclei were found just beneath the epidermis immediately after application of 1 N HCl. Immediately after exposure to 1 N NaOH dispersed collagen fib

The effect of intestinal fluid transport of exposing the serosa to hydrochloric acid. A study of mechanisms.

Hydrochloric acid (0.1 M) placed on the serosal surface of a jejunal segment evoked an intestinal secretion (rats) or inhibited a net fluid absorption (cats). In rats it was demonstrated that lidocaine (placed on the serosa of periarterially denervated intestinal segments), hexamethonium (given i.v.; innervated or denervated intestines) and indomethacin (given i.v.; denervated intestines) markedly inhibited the acid induced secretion, while atropine (given i.v.) had no effect. In the cat experiments it was shown that tetrodotoxin (given close i.a. to denervated intestines) returned the rate of

The use of intravenous hydrochloric acid in the treatment of thirty-four patients with metabolic alkalosis.

Since 1972, 34 patients with refractory metabolic alkalosis have been treated with intravenous hydrochloric acid at the teaching hospitals of the Medical College of Georgia. Intravenous hydrochloric acid lacks some of the problems associated with alternative methods of therapy. The acid must always be given through a central vein, and its effects should be monitored closely. The use of intravenous hydrochloric acid is a safe, effective way of preventing the deleterious effcts of severe metabolic alkalosis.

[The effect of a retinol deficiency on the balance of the trace elements that regulate hydrochloric acid production].

Contents of Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+ and Cl- in gastric mucosa of normal and retinol-deficient rats were determined by X-ray spectroscopic analysis. Diet free of retinol was established to increase content of cations Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+ as well as of Cl- anion in rats' gastric mucosa. Accumulation of Ca2+ and K+ ions in gastric mucosa promotes secretion of HCl under the condition of retinol deficiency in the body. Raised content of Cl- anions in gastric mucosa may be a proof of activated hydrochloric acid secretion.

Postoperative metabolic alkalosis and acute renal failure: rationale for the use of hydrochloric acid.

Metabolic alkalosis secondary to chloride depletion, especially following gastrointestinal surgery and associated with acute renal failure, is a frequent clinical occurrence. Management of the resultant acid-base disturbance mandates chloride replacement. The presence of oliguria limits the choice of accompanying cation. The use of intravenous hydrochloric acid to correct and maintain proper chloride balance, secondary to external gastric fluid losses, is recommended as a straightforward approach. Two brief case synopses are presented. Both patients, florid examples of profound chloride deplet

STIMULATION OF FUNDULUS BY HYDROCHLORIC AND FATTY ACIDS IN FRESH WATER, AND BY FATTY ACIDS, MINERAL ACIDS, AND THE SODIUM SALTS OF MINERAL ACIDS IN SEA WATER.

1. Fundulus heteroclitus was found to be a reliable experimental animal for studies on chemical stimulation in either fresh or sea water. 2. The response of Fundulus to hydrochloric, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, and caproic acids was determined in fresh water, while the same acids plus sulfuric and nitric, as well as the sodium salts of the mineral acids, were tested in sea water. 3. Stimulation of Fundulus by hydrochloric acid in fresh water is correlated with the effective hydrogen ion concentration. Stimulation by the n-aliphatic acids in the same environment is correlated with two
