Helminth infection promotes colonization resistance via type 2 immunity.

Increasing incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease, in developed nations is associated with changes to the microbial environment, such as decreased prevalence of helminth colonization and alterations to the gut microbiota. We find that helminth infection protects mice deficient in the Crohn's disease susceptibility gene Nod2 from intestinal abnormalities by inhibiting colonization by an inflammatory Bacteroides species. Resistance to Bacteroides colonization was dependent on type 2 immunity, which promoted the establishment of a protective microbiota enriched in Clost

Exposure to sewage water and the development of allergic manifestations in Finnish children.

BACKGROUND: The hygiene hypothesis suggests that a decreased microbial load contributes to an increased risk of allergies. In the Finnish municipality of Nokia, sewage water was accidentally mixed with drinking water for 2 days. We studied the association between exposure and the emergence of allergies in children. METHODS: Children aged 2-5 years living in the accident area and an age-matched cohort from the control municipality were recruited. Based on the questionnaires, we identified 139 children exposed to the contaminated water and selected age- and sex-matched controls for them (mean a

Factors associated with the development and remission of allergic diseases in an epidemiological survey of high school students in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases are an important health problem for children and adults. It is important to know how allergic diseases develop and remit from infancy to adolescence. Early intervention is effective in treating allergic diseases. OBJECTIVE: We performed a large-scale questionnaire survey of high school students in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, and analyzed the factors associated with the development and remission of allergic diseases. METHODS: A total of 21,802 students participated in the epidemiologic survey, and the valid response rate was 89.3% (19,461). We applied an inverse pro

Infection: friend or foe in the development of atopy and asthma? The epidemiological evidence.

There is increasing evidence from epidemiological studies to support the "hygiene hypothesis" with regard to the development of allergic diseases. This review will discuss the epidemiological findings relating to atopy and asthma, separately. The strongest arguments in favour of the "hygiene hypothesis" are the findings relating early life day care attendance to a significantly reduced risk of atopy and asthma, and the strong link between sibship size and the occurrence of atopy as confirmed by numerous studies. Furthermore, data relating serological immune responses to certain infections such

Expression of genes related to anti-inflammatory pathways are modified among farmers' children.

BACKGROUND: The hygiene hypothesis states that children exposed to higher loads of microbes such as farmers' children suffer less from allergies later in life. Several immunological mechanisms underpinning the hygiene hypothesis have been proposed such as a shift in T helper cell balance, T regulatory cell activity, or immune regulatory mechanisms induced by the innate immunity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the proposed immunological mechanisms for the hygiene hypotheses are found in farmers' children. METHODS: We assessed gene expression levels of 64 essential markers of the innate and

Immunoregulation of CNS autoimmunity by helminth and mycobacterial infections.

The 'hygiene hypothesis' has been proposed to explain apparent increases in autoimmune disease and allergy in areas of the world with improved health care and sanitation. This hypothesis proposes that the lack of serious childhood infections impairs development of an appropriately educated immune response. Imbalance of Th1 and Th2 responses and lack of regulatory T-cell populations are two of many proposed potential mechanisms for immune failures such as autoimmunity and allergy. We summarize the literature evidence for the influence of infectious organisms on autoimmunity with focus on helmin

Environmental factors in primary biliary cirrhosis.

The etiology of the autoimmune liver disease primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) remains largely unresolved, owing in large part to the complexity of interaction between environmental and genetic contributors underlying disease development. Observations of disease clustering, differences in geographical prevalence, and seasonality of diagnosis rates suggest the environmental component to PBC is strong, and epidemiological studies have consistently found cigarette smoking and history of urinary tract infection to be associated with PBC. Current evidence implicates molecular mimicry as a primary mec

Oral hygiene status and vascular aging in schoolchildren and their mothers.

BACKGROUND: Poor oral hygiene, generally manifesting as dental caries, gingivitis, or periodontitis, is a common chronic condition among both children and adults worldwide and has been reportedly associated with hypertension and arterial stiffness mainly in adult patients. However, these associations have not been well-studied in children and adults in the general population. Therefore, we conducted this cross-sectional study to clarify the associations between oral hygiene indices and high blood pressure (BP)/hypertension and arterial stiffness as assessed by the cardio-ankle vascular index (

Risk factors associated with inflammatory bowel disease: A multicenter case-control study in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is unknown, but it is believed to be multifactorial. The hygiene hypothesis proposes that better hygiene conditions would lead to less infectious disease during childhood and favor the development of immune-mediated diseases. AIM: To test the hygiene hypothesis in IBD by assessing the environmental risk factors associated with IBD development in different regions of Brazil with diverse socioeconomic development indices. METHODS: A multicenter case-control study was carried out with 548 Crohn's disease (CD) and 492 ulcerative coliti

Thumb sucking or nail biting in childhood and adolescence is associated with an increased risk of Crohn's disease: results from a large case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The hygiene hypothesis suggests that a reduction in microbial exposure contributes to an impaired immune response later in life and increases the incidence of immune-mediated diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Thumb sucking and nail biting are two early habits that modulate the oral microbiota composition and antigen load. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized a lower risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults with prior thumb sucking and nail biting. METHODS: 918 IBD cases and their 918 siblings without IBD were asked to fill out a survey containing

Perinatal pet exposure, faecal microbiota, and wheezy bronchitis: is there a connection?

Background. The hygiene hypothesis suggests that high hygiene standards have led to an immune dysfunction and an increase in allergic diseases. Farming-related exposures are associated with a decreased risk of asthma. Since the gut microbiota may be a pivotal component in the hygiene hypothesis, we studied whether perinatal exposure to pets, doctor's diagnosed wheezy bronchitis (WB), and compositional changes in the gut microbiota are interrelated among urban infants. Methods. Data were collected prospectively from a mother-infant nutrition study. Data on perinatal pet ownership, WB, and the m

Do task and item difficulty affect overestimation of one's hand hygiene compliance? A cross-sectional survey of physicians and nurses in surgical clinics of six hospitals in Germany.

BACKGROUND: One barrier to hand hygiene compliance is overestimation of one's own performance. Overconfidence research shows that overestimation tends to be higher for difficult tasks, which suggests that the magnitude of overestimation also depends on how it is assessed. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that overestimation was stronger for hand hygiene indications with low compliance (i.e., high difficulty), and the hypothesis that self-reported overall compliance based on a single item is higher than based on "5 Moments of Hand Hygiene" (WHO-5) items, since the single item implies an aggregati

Relationship between oral hygiene state and levels of oral sensory perception and motor ability.

It has been postulated that subjects with high levels of oral sensory perception and motor ability are able to achieve higher standards of oral hygiene even under different dietary regimes. In this study, eleven dental personnel volunteers were started on a low-sucrose diet for one week, followed by a high-sucrose diet for another week, while eleven others followed a reverse-order dietary regime. Oral sensory perception and motor ability were assessed by the oral stereognosis test and a test for oral motor ability. There was a greater trend for subjects to have more plaque on their teeth when

The microbial peace-signal hypothesis: distributed immune "peace hubs" across the human body.

The human immune system depends on microbial partners to maintain restraint. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), produced by anaerobic fermenters in the gut, mouth, and skin, act as biochemical "peace signals" that calm immune activation and promote tolerance. In this hypothesis, "peace signals" refer primarily to microbially derived SCFAs; additional microbial metabolites are discussed as possible but more speculative contributors to immune restraint. This Microbial Peace-Signal Hypothesis proposes that immune homeostasis is not a static legacy of early-life microbial exposure, but a continuous

Hygiene levels in a contemporary population cohort are associated with wheezing and atopic eczema in preschool infants.

BACKGROUND: The hygiene hypothesis states that insufficient exposure to certain infectious agents during childhood increases the risk of developing asthma and atopic diseases. Improvements in hygiene levels may be partly responsible for this decline in exposure. AIMS: To assess whether hygiene levels in infancy are associated with wheeze and/or atopic eczema, independent of a number of possible confounding factors. METHODS: Data were gathered from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Parental self completion questionnaires provided symptom data on infant wheeze and a

Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and multiple sclerosis susceptibility: A multiethnic study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity is associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) in blacks and Hispanics and to what extent measures of the hygiene hypothesis or breastfeeding could explain these findings. EBV and CMV have been associated with MS risk in whites, and the timing and frequency of both viruses vary by factors implicated in the hygiene hypothesis. METHODS: Incident cases of MS or its precursor, clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), and matched controls (blacks, 111 cases/128 controls; Hispanics, 173/187; whites, 235/256) wer

Sacro-coxxygial hygiene, a key factor in the outcome of pilonidal sinus surgical treatment?

BACKGROUND: Surgical wound infection contributes to prolonged recovery time after pilonidal sinus excision. As a standard procedure after surgery, we recommend our patients to perform water irrigations in the intergluteal cleft 4 to 6 times a day during the post-operative period. Our hypothesis is that this should reduce healing time and complication rates. The aim of this study was to measure the importance of sacro coccygeal hygiene in the management of pilonidal sinus disease. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data after surgical management of pilonidal sinus (sinusectomy procedures) i

Household hygiene practices in relation to dampness at home and current wheezing and rhino-conjunctivitis among school age children.

Good household hygiene practices may improve indoor air quality in the domestic environment. Conversely, a 'hygiene hypothesis' is challenging the importance of hygiene and sanitation at home. This study aims to investigate the relationship between household hygiene practices and dampness at home and current wheezing, asthma and other allergic conditions among Australian children. Nine hundred and ninety-six children from four primary schools in Perth, Western Australia, were recruited for a domestic environmental and health survey during March and April of 2002. The results showed that high c

Vocal Hygiene Habits and Vocal Handicap Among Conservatory Students of Classical Singing.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess classical singing students' compliance with vocal hygiene practices identified in the literature and to explore the relationship between self-reported vocal hygiene practice and self-reported singing voice handicap in this population. The primary hypothesis was that increased attention to commonly recommended vocal hygiene practices would correlate with reduced singing voice handicap. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional, survey-based study. METHODS: An anonymous survey assessing demographics, attention to 11 common vocal hygiene recommendations in

Association of Strongyloides stercoralis infection with the development of diabetes mellitus: a meta-analysis.

Previous studies have shown that helminth infection protects against the development of diabetes mellitus (DM), possibly related to the hygiene hypothesis. However, studies involving Stronglyoides stercoralis and its possible association with DM are scarce and have shown contradicting results, prompting us to perform this meta-analysis to obtain more precise estimates. Related studies were searched from PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Cochrane Library until 1 August 2024. Data on the occurrence of DM in patients positive and negative for S. stercoralis were obtained. All analyses w
