Hyoid bone and laryngeal movement dependent upon presence of a tracheotomy tube.

The aim of this prospective, consecutive study was to investigate the biomechanical effects, if any, of the presence of a tracheotomy tube and tube cuff status, tube capping status, and aspiration status on movement of the hyoid bone and larynx during normal swallowing. Seven adult patients (5 male, 2 female) with an age range of 46-82 years (mean = 63 years) participated. Criteria for inclusion were no history of cancer of or surgery to the head and neck (except tracheotomy), normal cognition, normal swallowing, and ability to tolerate decannulation. Digital videofluoroscopic swallowing studi

Hyoid bone and atlas vertebra in established mouth breathers: a cephalometric study.

The position of hyoid bone and atlas vertebra in 29 established mouth breathers (17 boys and 12 girls) in the age group of 10-14 years were cephalometrically evaluated and compared with 23 nose breathers (11 boys and 12 girls). The children of both the groups were selected on the basis of history and clinical examination. The comparisons were made using univariate analysis for male and female groups separately as well as combined. It was observed that mouth breathers do maintain an extended head posture, which was evident from a decrease in distance between the occiput and dorsal arch of atlas

Hyoid Bone Syndrome in a Patient Undergoing Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation.

The clinical case describes the presence of hyoid bone syndrome (HBS) in a patient with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, and the resolution of painful symptoms through an osteopathic manual technique (unwinding) applied to the tongue. To the knowledge of the authors, it is the first case report involving an LVAD patient with HBS treated with an osteopathic approach. The article briefly reviews the data relating to surgical therapy for patients with a clinical history of end-stage heart failure and symptoms related to HBS and posits some hypotheses on the presence of pain r

Electrocautery only for hyoid bone removal in pediatric thyroglossal duct cyst excision.

AIM: Surgical excision of hyoid bone is the mainstay of thyroglossal duct cyst removal, to prevent recurrences. Bone excision by cut - bone forceps may prove inaccurate and somewhat dangerous. Therefore, use of alternative methods has been advocated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The proposal of the study is to cut the body of the hyoid bone with the only electric scalpel. Surgical casenotes of 57 pediatric patients operated by our Institution with modified Sistrunk technique and complete dissection of the entire body of hyoid bone and its removal at the cartilage junction with lateral horn with mono

A Novel Laryngeal Preservation Technique following Total Glossectomy with Hyoid Bone Resection.

Despite the recent progress of chemotherapy and sophisticated radiotherapy, surgery still remains the most reliable treatment for advanced tongue cancers in terms of survival. The major disadvantage of this treatment is that it should sacrifice the quality of patients' life. When the tongue cancer is so advanced as to involve the hyoid bone, which is considered a functional part of the larynx, radical operation needs to resect both the entire tongue and the larynx and the hyoid bone en bloc to prevent aspiration pneumonia. As a result of total laryngectomy, the patients will suffer significant

Atypical Pharyngeal Pouch Arising Bilaterally between the Hyoid Bone and Thyroid Cartilage.

Introduction. Pharyngoesophageal diverticuli are a common cause of dysphagia; they are associated with various morbidities and a decreased quality of life. There are several different types of the diverticuli, and they are divided based on the anatomical location of origin relative to the cricopharyngeal muscle; these include Zenker's, Killian-Jamieson's, and Laimer's diverticula. The authors present a unique case of pharyngoesophageal diverticulum that has not been previously described. Case Presentation. A 65-year-old male presented with a 12-month history of dysphagia and odynophagia for so

Traumatic hyoid bone fracture in patient wearing a helmet: a case report.

Fractures of hyoid bone are rare and most of the injuries cause by strangulation. Hyoid bone fractures are usually the result of direct trauma to the neck through manual strangulation or hanging, blunt trauma or from projectiles. But hyoid bone fracture caused by helmet strap has not been reported before. We present a young man wearing a helmet had an isolated hyoid bone fractures after a motorcycle-to-motorcycle accident. So, we should be more aware that helmet wearing riders are prone to have this kind of injury.

[Postural changes of the tongue and hyoid bone following orthognathodontic surgical interventions].

The study was carried out on 28 dysgnathic patients submitted to surgical correction of malocclusion with the use of latero-lateral X-rays pre- and postoperatively. Cephalometry included a tongue and hyoid bone profiles and changes were assessed and quantified. It was interesting to note that aspecific evaluation of progenia patients confirmed the raising of the tongue and the lowering of the hyoid bone. Evaluation of the type of operation carried out led to further considerations. In patients undergoing combined operation there was a prevalence of a raising of the two components; mandible ope

A Rare Isolated Hyoid Bone Fracture: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Isolated hyoid bone fractures are rare and account for a small percentage of all head and neck fractures. The anatomic location of the hyoid bone, which is between the jaw and the cervical spine, is its most essential protective mechanism. In addition to the anatomic protection provided by the mandible, the fusion of the hyoid's bone pieces and the bone's mobile capacity in all directions are other protective factors contributing to the rarity of these fractures. However, this defense mechanism can get compromised upon exposure to blunt traumas and hyperextension injuries. Injury to the neck b

Correction of the glosso-larynx and resultant positional changes of the hyoid bone and cranium.

In ankyloglossia with deviation of the epiglottis and larynx (ADEL) the tongue is located forward and as a result the epiglottis is elevated and leans towards the mouth. The larynx is also raised and curves ventrally. Various symptoms have been observed as a result of this condition. Correction of the glosso-larynx (CGL) is the operation performed to treat ADEL. The CGL procedure and the results obtained with it are reported in this paper. In addition, we studied the following six parameters using head and neck X-rays before and after CGL (the changes in these parameters as a result of CGL are

Is there a potential role for hyoid bone compression in pathogenesis of carotid artery stenosis?

BACKGROUND: Blood flow turbulence and increased shear stress, particularly at sites of sudden, marked arterial wall changes, are significant hemodynamic parameters in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We present a case in which we found the hyoid bone protruding into the carotid vessels and may have been contributing, in part, to atherosclerotic carotid stenosis. CASE PRESENTATION: An 85-year-old woman presenting with left arm and leg weakness consistent with right hemispheric transient ischemic attack. Magnetic resonance arteriography (MRA) and carotid non-invasive studies revealed a 90%

[The role of the hyoid bone in the act of deglutition after horizontal epiglottic laryngectomy].

Results of ++roentgeno-cinematographic studies of the deglutition act in patients after horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy are presented. The analysis of the material has been expected to provide an answer to what an extent the removal or the preservation of hyoid bone does influence the disorders that involve the swallowing. The entire elaborated material comprises 51 deglutition acts, having been divided into 3 groups. In the I group of studied subjects it was observed that there was a more sizable shortening of the pharynx, as well as a greater upward and forward movement of the remaining

The Role of the Hyoid Bone in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Severity: A Systematic Review.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has numerous complications that negatively impact patients' quality of life. Early diagnosis can significantly reduce these complications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the hyoid bone position and the severity of apnea, and to determine if hyoid-related cephalometric variables can be used as predictors of apnea severity. A systematic review of the literature was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The search was conducted across databases including Medline, ScienceDirect, BVS, and WOK. Two researchers analysed the results applyin

[A Case of Carotid Artery Stenosis Associated with Repetitive Stimulation of the Hyoid Bone].

A 40-year-old man presented with left-arm weakness, facial palsy, and dysarthria. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)revealed acute-stage cerebral infarction in the internal watershed area of the right hemicerebrum and MR angiography(MRA)demonstrated 56% stenosis of the right common and internal carotid arteries. Computed tomography(CT)scan showed no calcification and a stenotic lesion of the right common carotid artery, adjacent to the prolonged greater horn of the right hyoid bone. Because no other causes were found for the cerebral infarction, the compression of the stenosis of the right caroti

[Objective evaluation of the influence of the hyoid bone resection on the disorders in the act of swallowing].

Laryngographic, manometric and videorentgenocinematographic examinations of swallowing were conducted on 49 patients after partial laryngectomy and on 35 subjects being a control group. The results of examinations indicate that the mobility of remaining after the surgery parts of the larynx have the great influence on the efficient swallowing. The larynx mobility is closely related to the remaining of the hyoid bone. Resection of the hyoid bone or its part is the factor that causes intensified difficulty during swallowing and increase in the frequency of the occurrence of aspiration. The study

[The hyoid bone and its preservation in the framework of supraglottic partial resection of the larynx].

BACKGROUND: Whether to remove the hyoid bone as part of the horizontal partial laryngectomy is a question which is discussed controversially. Pathohistological examination of the region involved should help to answer this question. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Regarding the involvement of the hyoid bone, 71 surgical specimens of supraglottic carcinoma invading the pre-epiglottic space were studied by whole-organ serial sections. RESULTS: Only four specimens demonstrated mandatory resection of the hyoid bone because of its proximity to the advancing border of the tumor. In these cases, large tumor m

Posture of the head, the hyoid bone, and the tongue in children with and without enlarged tonsils.

The purpose of this investigation was to analyse whether there were any differences between children with and without enlarged tonsils with regard to the posture of the head, the hyoid bone, and the tongue. Twenty-two children with enlarged tonsils were compared with a matched normal control group. Of the children in the tonsil group, 59 per cent were mouth-breathers during the day and 82 per cent during the night. None of the control children was a mouth-breather. The results showed that, compared with the control children, children with enlarged tonsils had an extended posture of the head, a
