The prevalence of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis and the role of interincisal angulation in disease severity in a representative cohort of horses in Switzerland.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is an increasingly diagnosed degenerative dental disease in aged horses. The primary aim of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence of EOTRH in horses admitted to the Equine Hospital, University of Zurich, for dental procedures from 2004 to 2017. A secondary goal was to measure and compare interincisal angles on two-dimensional radiographs of horses with EOTRH to determine whether the interincisal angle is associated with age and severity of the disease. Radiographs were assessed for the presence of lysis and/or

Application of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) as a Healing Aid after Extraction of Incisors in the Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis Syndrome.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a stress-free, relatively safe method supporting the treatment of many different diseases. Although it is widely used in human medicine (including dentistry), in veterinary medicine, especially in the treatment of horses, there are not many scientifically described and documented cases of its use. Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis syndrome is a disease that affects older horses and significantly reduces their quality of life. The only effective treatment for this condition is extraction of the incisors. The described case compares the

Multiple assessment of molars with hypercementosis lost due to periodontitis using X-ray micro-computed tomography, electron microprobe analysis, and histological sections.

This article aimed to achieve a better understanding of cementum hyperplasia in the maxillary second molars lost due to periodontitis. Six maxillary second molars with hypercementosis were measured for the mineral concentration using micro-computed tomography and calcium element distributions using electron microprobe analysis. Calcium was distributed throughout the cementum, although the mineral concentration differed based on the cementum depth. The hyperplastic cementum was of the extrinsic fiber-rich cellular mixed stratified type. These results have implications for future studies aiming

Unraveling the Life History of Past Populations through Hypercementosis: Insights into Cementum Apposition Patterns and Possible Etiologies Using Micro-CT and Confocal Microscopy.

The "teeth-as-tools" hypothesis posits that Neanderthals used their anterior teeth as a tool or a third hand for non-dietary purposes. These non- or para-masticatory activities (e.g., tool-making or food preparation prior to ingestion) have also been described in other past and extant human populations, and other Primates. Cementum is the mineralized tissue that covers the tooth root surface and anchors it to the alveolar bone. Under certain conditions (e.g., mechanical stress, infection), its production becomes excessive (i.e., beyond the physiological state) and is called 'hypercementosis'.

An application of the density standard and scaled-pixel-counting protocol to assess the radiodensity of equine incisor teeth affected by resorption and hypercementosis: preliminary advancement in dental radiography.

BACKGROUND: Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) syndrome is a dental disease where the radiographic signs may be quantified using radiographic texture features. This study aimed to implement the scaled-pixel-counting protocol to quantify and compare the image structure of teeth and the density standard in order to improve the identification of the radiographic signs of tooth resorption and hypercementosis using the EOTRH syndrome model. METHODS AND RESULTS: A detailed examination of the oral cavity was performed in 80 horses and maxillary incisor teeth were evalu

Determination and validation of criteria to define hypercementosis in two medieval samples from France (Sains-en-Gohelle, AD 7th-17th century; Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac, AD 7th-8th century).

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this article was to develop different visual criteria allowing for an objective definition of hypercementosis (cementum hyperplasia). This preliminary study must notably show how to better understand at a later stage the significance of its frequency as well as its aetiologies, especially in past populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: we set up a study protocol (macroscopic and photographic observations) on material consisting of 2 medieval samples from France (1) Sains-en-Gohelle sample-SG (AD 7th-17th century; 407 individuals; 5756 teeth observed, 319 with hypercemen

Irregular periapical radiopacity in mandibular premolars and molars.

Increased deposition of cementum is observed in a wide number of both benign and malignant conditions. Many cases are often diagnosed during routine examination as an incidental finding. Diagnosing correctly without confusing it with other similarly appearing lesions, thus avoiding subjecting the patient to unnecessary investigations and stress, is of prime importance. We report one such case, where the patient presented with the routine complaint of a painful tooth, during the investigation of which he was also diagnosed with hypercementosis affecting the mandibular second premolars and molar

Craniometaphyseal Dysplasia: A review and novel oral manifestation.

Craniometaphyseal Dysplasia (CMD) is a sclerosing osseous dysplasia characterised by hyperostosis of craniofacial and long bones, resulting in distortion and cranial nerve palsies. We present a case report on the management of a 63 year old female with Craniometaphyseal Dysplasia. This report describes an additional clinical manifestation of hypercementosis, which although well recognised in other sclerosing osseous dysplasias, is not reported in the literature for Craniometaphyseal Dysplasia. We discuss established in vivo studies in mice which link the genetic mutations found in Craniometaph

The oral pathological conditions of the Broken Hill (Kabwe) 1 cranium.

The Broken Hill (Kabwe) 1 cranium exhibits dental caries on ten teeth, multiple periapical lesions, periodontal disease, severe anterior dental wear, and hypercementosis, conditions all little-studied in Middle Pleistocene humans and making Broken Hill 1 of great value to discussions of the antiquity of oral pathological conditions. These individual pathological conditions, however, have never previously been described in detail; the focus has been on diagnosing an overarching syndrome connecting the temporal and oral lesions. This case study examines the individual dentoalveolar pathological

Enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia (EDHFH) syndrome: suggested pathogenic mechanisms.

The syndrome of enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia (EDHFH) is an unusual syndrome and is unique to black South Africans. Major criteria for the syndrome are enamel dysplasia with generalized amelogenesis imperfecta-like features and atypical hyperplastic dental follicles with microscopic features of central odontogenic fibroma WHO-type (follicle analogue) attached to the crowns of multiple impacted teeth. Minor features of some cases are anterior open-bite malocclusion, supernumerary teeth, pulpal calcification, aberrant roots with hypercementosis, and hypodont

Odontoma associated with mandibular transmigrated canine in a geriatric patient: Second case report.

OBJECTIVE: This report discusses the clinical relevance of a novel case of an odontoma and transmigrated canine in the setting of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD), hypercementosis and moderate to severe periodontitis in a 66-year-old patient. BACKGROUND: An odontoma may infrequently impede tooth eruption and rarely has been implicated with canine transmigration. COD is a benign fibro-osseous lesion associated with decreased vascularity and poorer surgical intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A partially edentulous woman, in no acute distress, underwent clinical and radiographic evaluat

Selection of Filtering and Image Texture Analysis in the Radiographic Images Processing of Horses' Incisor Teeth Affected by the EOTRH Syndrome.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is one of the horses' dental diseases, mainly affecting the incisor teeth. An increase in the incidence of aged horses and a painful progressive course of the disease create the need for improved early diagnosis. Besides clinical findings, EOTRH recognition is based on the typical radiographic findings, including levels of dental resorption and hypercementosis. This study aimed to introduce digital processing methods to equine dental radiographic images and identify texture features changing with disease progression. The radiogr

Rough hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta with follicular hyperplasia.

This report documents a unique case of rough hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta with apparent anterior oligodontia and multiple anomalies of the associated mesenchymally derived tissues. Multiple unerupted teeth showed hypercementosis, distorted roots with aberrant dentin formation, and marked follicular hyperplasia. The hyperplastic follicles had a complex histopathologic appearance that recapitulated some features of the WHO-type odontogenic fibroma. The features of these teeth, the nature of the associated follicular lesions, and their relationship to the unerupted teeth are discussed.

In the light of the thesis of J. Thibault, the authors suggest, in association with transplantation of wisdom tooth buds into the alveolus of the first molar, a technique consisting of placing the graft in its pre-eruptive position, removing in a block the bud, the gubernaculum and the sub-jacent gingival mucosa. Under these conditions, eruption occurs at the same time as development of the roots, which represents the most physiological solution. At the same time as formation of the root, the authors noted a paradoxal rhizalysis, hypercementosis resulting in ankylosis and conservation of vital

[Evaluation of the periapical tissue lesions by roentgenogram].

Most of the periapical tissue lesions appear as radiolucent areas in a reontgenogram. However, several lesions of pulpal and periodontal origin as well as lesions caused by benign or malignant tumors appear in the roentgenogram as radiopaque areas. This article deals in detail with the classification, differential diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases which appear radiopaque in an X-ray film. Special attention is given to apical condensing osteitis, hypercementosis, chronic osteomyelitis and odontogenic tumors. These lesions are fairly common and the general practitioner should be familiar
