[Endemic goiter and inflammatory lesions of the hypothalamus].

Inflammation of the hypothalamus, consisting of perivasal parvicellular sleeves between the paraventricular nucleus rostrally, the mamillary nuclei caudally, 3rd ventricle wall below the sulcus, medially and o sagittal plane taken a little beyond the column of the fornix laterally--i.e. in the space shown to include the hypophysothyrotropic structures by experimental physiopathology--was observed in a woman with endemic goitre. Reference is made to a similar finding in goitrous dogs from enzootic areas of Piedmon. Epidemiological and clinical considerations are put forwary for the view that en

Social Control of Hypothalamus-Mediated Male Aggression.

How environmental and physiological signals interact to influence neural circuits underlying developmentally programmed social interactions such as male territorial aggression is poorly understood. We have tested the influence of sensory cues, social context, and sex hormones on progesterone receptor (PR)-expressing neurons in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) that are critical for male territorial aggression. We find that these neurons can drive aggressive displays in solitary males independent of pheromonal input, gonadal hormones, opponents, or social context. By contrast, these neurons c

Kisspeptin control of hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian functions.

The discovery of Kisspeptin (Kiss) has opened a new direction in research on neuroendocrine control of reproduction in vertebrates. Belonging to the RF amide family of peptides, Kiss and its cognate receptor Gpr54 (Kissr) have a long and complex evolutionary history. Multiple forms of Kiss and Kissr are identified in non-mammalian vertebrates, with the exception of birds, and monotreme mammals. However, only a single form of the ligand (KISS1/Kiss1) and receptor (KISS1R/Kiss1r) is retained in higher mammals. Kiss1 is distributed in the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and its primary

Ghrelin role in hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis.

Based on the available data, it was shown that ghrelin is involved in a series of physiological processes such as regulation of food intake, body weight, and cardiovascular or immune function. Recent studies have shown that ghrelin also plays an important role in the regulation of female reproduction. Information exists that its functional receptor, GHSR type 1a (GHS-R1a), is expressed in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Ghrelin is synthesized locally in the hypothalamus, pituitary and ovaries of many species and has autocrine and/or paracrine effects. Most research indicates that ghre

Prolonged hyperglycemia & hyperinsulinemia increases BDNF mRNA expression in the posterior ventromedial hypothalamus and the dorsomedial hypothalamus of fed female rats.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a key role in neuronal development, synaptic plasticity, and the central control of energy homeostasis. Peripheral metabolic signals such as leptin and glucose regulate hypothalamic BDNF gene expression. However, the effects of long-term hyperglycemia and/or hyperinsulinemia on BDNF mRNA levels in the hypothalamus and other brain regions where BDNF regulates physiological functions have not been investigated. Therefore, using in situ hybridization we examined whether high glucose, high insulin, or both affected BDNF gene expression in vivo. Ovarie

The Integrated Function of the Lateral Hypothalamus in Energy Homeostasis.

The lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) serves as a central integrative hub for the regulation of energy homeostasis and motivational behaviors, including feeding and arousal. Recent advances in single-cell transcriptomics have revealed remarkable molecular heterogeneity within the LHA, identifying more than 30 distinct neuronal subtypes, such as GABAergic (LHAVgat), glutamatergic (LHAVglut2), orexin, melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), and leptin receptor-expressing (LHALepr) neurons. These neuronal populations sense peripheral metabolic signals-such as leptin, insulin, and glucose-both directly

Hypothalamus and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Review.

Humans have lived in a dynamic environment fraught with potential dangers for thousands of years. While fear and stress were crucial for the survival of our ancestors, today, they are mostly considered harmful factors, threatening both our physical and mental health. Trauma is a highly stressful, often life-threatening event or a series of events, such as sexual assault, war, natural disasters, burns, and car accidents. Trauma can cause pathological metaplasticity, leading to long-lasting behavioral changes and impairing an individual's ability to cope with future challenges. If an individual

Morphological alterations of the hypothalamus in idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a condition characterized by raised intracranial pressure, is not well understood. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the hypothalamus might exhibit alterations in patients with IIH, based on its established association with obesity and the potential role of hormonal and metabolic factors in IIH. DESIGN: Retrospective single-center cohort study. METHODS: Thirty-three individuals with IIH and 40 matched healthy individuals were studied, including levels of the hormones and proteins leptin, adiponectin, ghrelin, insu

Characterization of Kisspeptin Neurons in the Human Rostral Hypothalamus.

BACKGROUND: Kisspeptin (KP) neurons in the rostral periventricular region of the 3rd ventricle (RP3V) of female rodents mediate positive estrogen feedback to gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons and, thus, play a fundamental role in the mid-cycle luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. The RP3V is sexually dimorphic, and male rodents with lower KP cell numbers are unable to mount estrogen-induced LH surges. OBJECTIVE: To find and characterize the homologous KP neurons in the human brain, we studied formalin-fixed post-mortem hypothalami. METHODS: Immunohistochemical techniques were used. RESULTS:

Topological atlas of the hypothalamus in adult rhesus monkey.

The prosomeric model explains the embryological development of the central nervous system (CNS) shared by all vertebrates as a Bauplan. As a primary event, the early neural plate is patterned by intersecting longitudinal plates and transverse segments, forming a mosaic of progenitor units. The hypothalamus is specified by three prosomeres (hp1, hp2, and the acroterminal domain) of the secondary prosencephalon with corresponding alar and basal plate parts, which develop apart from the diencephalon. Mounting evidence suggests that progenitor units within alar and basal plate parts of hp1 and hp2

The hypothalamus and neuropsychiatric disorders: psychiatry meets microscopy.

The past decades have witnessed an explosion of knowledge on brain structural abnormalities in schizophrenia and depression. Focusing on the hypothalamus, we try to show how postmortem brain microscopy has contributed to our understanding of mental disease-related pathologic alterations of this brain region. Gross anatomical abnormalities (volume changes of the third ventricle, the hypothalamus, and its nuclei) and alterations at the cellular level (loss of neurons, increased or decreased expression of hypothalamic peptides such as oxytocin, vasopressin, corticotropin-releasing hormone, and ot

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor originating in the hypothalamus.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumors (RGNT) of the fourth ventricle are slow-growing tumors that primarily involve the fourth ventricular region. We here report the first patient, an 8-year-old girl, with an RGNT originating in the hypothalamus and manifesting with precocious puberty. After partial removal, the remaining tumor showed rapid enlargement, and the pathologic diagnosis at the second surgery revealed histopathologic features similar to those found in the initial samples, including biphasic patterns of neurocytic rosettes and GFAP-stained astrocytic components. These tumor cells had m

Asymmetry in the control of cardiac performance by dorsomedial hypothalamus.

Dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) plays a key role in integrating cardiovascular responses to stress. We have recently reported greater heart rate responses following disinhibition of the right side of the DMH (R-DMH) in anesthetized rats and greater suppression of stress-induced tachycardia following inhibition of the R-DMH in conscious rats [both compared with similar intervention in the left DMH (L-DMH)], suggesting existence of right/left side asymmetry in controlling cardiac chronotropic responses by the DMH. The aim of the present study was to determine whether similar asymmetry is present

Menstrual psychosis: a bipolar disorder with a link to the hypothalamus.

The literature on menstrual psychosis is briefly reviewed in this article. There are about 80 cases with substantial evidence, and about 200 other possible cases. The clinical features are generally those of manic depressive (bipolar) disorder. The diagnosis requires the accurate dating of the onsets of episodes and of menstrual bleeding. Obtaining a baseline of several carefully dated episodes is also important in finding the best way to arrest the periodic illness. Although conventional psychotropic drugs can shorten episodes, they do not prevent recurrences. For this, unconventional treatme

The role of gut hormones and the hypothalamus in appetite regulation.

The World Health Organisation has estimated that by 2015 approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million obese. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular events, stroke and cancer. The hypothalamus is a crucial region for integrating signals from central and peripheral pathways and plays a major role in appetite regulation. In addition, there are reciprocal connections with the brainstem and higher cortical centres. In the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, there are two major neuronal populations which stimulate or inhibit food in

Induction of panic attack by stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamus.

Panic attacks are sudden debilitating attacks of intense distress often accompanied by physical symptoms such as shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Numerous brain regions, hormones, and neurotransmitter systems are putatively involved, but the etiology and neurocircuitry of panic attacks is far from established. One particular brain region of interest is the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). In cats and rats, electrical stimulation delivered to the VMH has been shown to evoke an emotional "panic attack-like" escape behavior, and in humans, stimulation targeting nuclei just posterior or
