We report a 49-year-old woman with neuromyelitis optica (NMO) spectrum disorder coexisting with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). She presented with acute brainstem symptoms and transverse myelitis. Brain MRI showed focal high signal intensity lesions in the hypothalamus and the pontine tegmentum on T2-weighted and FLAIR images. MRA revealed stenotic changes of the bilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA), posterior cerebral arteries (PCA) and basilar artery (BA). Spinal MRI revealed hyperintense lesions within the cord extending from the T4 to the T6 level on the T2-weighted image. The patient fulfilled

Other than from the thalamus and sensory cortex, episodic pain is an extremely rare neurological manifestation in the central compartment. This study reports a middle-aged man who experienced an acute onset of episodic oscillatory burning pain restricted to the cheiro-oral region, who was found to have a singular infarct at the left tegmental pons. A close relationship between his pain attack and an elevation of arterial blood pressure was clearly observed. Blood adenohypophyseal hormones and electroencephalogram did not reveal an abnormality in the ictus. Neuroimaging and clinical studies did

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and results in neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment. White matter (WM) is affected in AD and has implications for neural circuitry and cognitive function. The trajectory of these changes across age, however, is still not well understood, especially at earlier stages in life. To address this, we used the AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F knock-in (APPKI) mouse model that harbors a single copy knock-in of the human amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene with three familial AD mutations. We performed in vivo diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to study h

The efferent connections of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) of the rat have been examined using the autoradiographic method. Following injections of small amounts (0.4-2.0 muCi) of tritium labeled amino acids, fibers from the VMH can be traced forward through the periventricular region, the medial hypothalamus and the medial forebrain bundle to the preoptic and thalamic periventricular nuclei, to the medial and lateral preoptic areas, to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and to the ventral part of the lateral septum. Some labeled axons continue through the bed nucleus

Middle-aged obesity and age-related anorexia leading to sarcopenia present a major public health burden. Similar age-associated patterns are observed across mammalian species, suggesting the involvement of conserved regulatory mechanisms. Age-dependent biphasic shifts in the balance between anabolic and catabolic signals of the adipose tissue-hypothalamus axis may contribute to both trends. Among hypothalamic mediators, neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a key anabolic (orexigenic and hypometabolic) peptide. This review summarizes current evidence on age-dependent changes in the effects of NPY on energy

Artemisia rupestris L. is the perennial herb of rupestris belonging to Artemisia (Compositae), which is wildly distributed in Xinjiang (China), middle Asia, and Europe. It is known to have anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, immune function regulation, and gastrointestinal function regulation effects. AR is used to treat digestive diseases, but the effects of AR on antifunctional dyspepsia (FD) activity have not yet been reported. In this study, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Artemisia rupestris L. extract (ARE) on gastrointestinal hormones and brain-gut peptide in functio

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologically, hypothalamic neurosarcoidosis occurs in middle-aged individuals with pituitary dysfunction. Older patients rarely develop hypothalamic neurosarcoidosis with incomplete hemiparesis.
OBSERVATIONS: MRI in a 75-year-old man with incomplete left hemiparesis revealed an enhanced mass lesion in the hypothalamus and tuber cinereum, with enhanced satellite nodules in the right basal ganglia. Transcortical neuroendoscopic biopsy was performed to confirm the pathological diagnosis. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) of the mass lesion revealed an abnormal vascular structure with a

It has been established that interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) injected into the cerebrospinal fluid inhibits gastric acid secretion in rats. Brain sites of action of IL-1 beta were investigated in conscious rats implanted unilaterally with chronic hypothalamic cannula. Gastric acid secretion was monitored 2 h after pylorus ligation. Human recombinant IL-1 beta (10 ng) microinjected into the medial preoptic area, anterior hypothalamus, and paraventricular nucleus inhibited gastric acid secretion by 76-83%. IL-1 beta microinjected into the ventromedial hypothalamus and other hypothalamic sites out

Unit activity of posterior, tuberal and anterior parts of the hypothalamus was studied during stimulation of the pelvic nerve in anesthetized and immobilized cats. Comparative analysis showed that neurons of the posterior hypothalamus were more responsive (89.6%) and had a shorter mean latency (33.3 +/- 2.4 msec) than neurons of more rostral parts of the hypothalamus. The focus of maximal pelvic-induced unit activity seems to be located in the posterior hypothalamus. The unit responses of the posterior hypothalamus evoked by pelvic nerve stimulation had long recovery cycles and were suppressed

A wide variety of behavioral changes in the female rat have been associated with the estrous cycle, pregnancy, and the postpartum period and their accompanying hormonal fluctuations. Since aminopeptidase activity, that presumably controls the activity of several neuroactive peptides, has been implicated in the control of these hormonal changes, the present study examined the tissue levels of Leu-arylamidase activity (Leu-ArA) in the cortices (frontal, parietal and occipital), striatum, hippocampus, amygdala, pineal gland and medulla oblongata during the estrous cycle, different stages of pregn

Obesity represents a global health issue and major socioeconomic burden. As a multifactorial disease, obesity is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, with maladaptive eating habits and high-fat, high-sugar diets (HFD, HFHS) overconsumption being major contributors. While traditionally studied in the context of adipose tissue and peripheral metabolism, the brain is at the centre of this pathology. In the central nervous system, circulating free fatty acids (FAs) are taken up directly, while brain lipoprotein lipases break down triglyceride-rich particles, providing an additional sou

AIMS: Daily and seasonal rhythms coordinate the endocrine and metabolic functions. The pituitary gland is the master regulator of several endocrine activities, and its function is classically regulated by endocrine signals from its target glands as well as from the hypothalamus. The growth hormone (GH) produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary presents a pulsatile secretion throughout the 24-hour cycle. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating the daily pattern of GH secretion are still unclear. Herein we investigated whether circadian GH mRNA and protein synthesis is modulated by ac

It has been demonstrated in our previous papers that in the anterior part of medial basal hypothalamus (AM BH) in sheep a stimulating, while in the caudal part of MBH (CMBH) an inhibiting centre of prolactin release are situated. These results suggested that CMBH might be the site of PIF production and prompted us to investigate the effect of dopamine (DA) on the concentration of prolactin in the peripheral blood (p.bl.) in animals in which CMBH had been previously lesioned and this concentration was very high. Stroke at the acute stage is a major cause of disability in adults, and is associated with dysfunction of brain networks. However, the mechanisms underlying changes in brain connectivity in stroke are far from fully elucidated. In the present study, we investigated brain metabolism and metabolic connectivity in a rat ischemic stroke model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) at the acute stage using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography. Voxel-wise analysis showed decreased metabolism mainly in the ipsilesional hemisphere, and increased metabolism mainly in the contralesion

OBJECTIVE: Priapism refers to a condition with persistent abnormal erection of the penis, which is usually caused by disease or injury in the brain or spinal cord, or obstruction to the outflow of blood through the dorsal vein at the root of the penis, without sexual desires. The effect of cerebral ischaemia on sexual function is unknown. The aim of this study is to explore whether priapism occurs in adult mice. Furthermore, we examined the relationship between priapism and the region of infarct in the brain.
DESIGN: Adult male CD-1 mice who underwent permanent middle cerebral artery occlusio

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The internal carotid artery (ICA) in the rat has a single extracranial branch, which supplies the muscles of mastication. The rat ICA also has multiple intracranial branches including (from proximal to distal): multiple small perforating arteries which supply the hypothalamus and the anterior choroidal artery which supplies the choroid plexus and part of the basal ganglia. At the ICA terminus, the vessel bifurcates into the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate selective injection of ICA branches in the rat.

1. The effect of electrolytic lesions of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (v.m.n.) on the lordosis reflex has been investigated on ovariectomized female rats. Lesions were made through chronically implanted platinum-iridium electrodes. 2. V.m.n. lesions did not disrupt lordosis immediately, but induced a gradual decline in the reflex. Lordosis performance reached it minimum no less than 12 hr after the lesion, and typically after 36--60 hr. 3. The magnitude of the lordosis deficit was related to the amount of v.m.n. damage. Destruction of other hypothalamic regions was without appr

BACKGROUND: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN) is a progressive fatal disorder caused by deposition of mutant transthyretin (TTR) amyloids mainly in the nerves and heart. Autonomic dysfunction is a major disabling manifestation, affecting 90% of patients with late-onset ATTRv-PN. The current study aimed to investigate brain functional alterations associated with dysautonomia due to peripheral autonomic nerve degeneration in ATTRv-PN.
METHODS: Resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from 43 ATTRv-PN patients predominantly of A97S (p.A117S) genotype, and

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether thalamic strokes presenting with a central Horner's syndrome (HS) show specific clinicoanatomic patterns.
METHODS: From the Lausanne Stroke Registry (period 1993 to spring 2002), the authors selected all patients with thalamic stroke presenting with ipsilateral HS. Patients with complete infarction of the posterior cerebral artery territory, with involvement of middle cerebral artery territory or bilateral lesions, were excluded. Lesions on brain MRI were correlated with standard neuroanatomic templates.
RESULTS: Nine patients with thalamic infarction presenting
