Amiodarone is an iodine-rich drug used to treat cardiac dysrhythmias. The structure of amiodarone resembles that of thyroxine, and treatment with amiodarone may alter thyroid function. The effects of antenatal amiodarone use on fetal/neonatal thyroid function have only been addressed in a limited number of patient reports. We describe two cases of transient neonatal hypothyroidism due to in utero amiodarone exposure, followed by a brief review of the available literature.

Physicians demonstrate differing attitudes about the management of hypothyroid patients on optimal replacement with thyroxine (T4) who have persisting symptoms. The use of liothyronine (T3) as combination therapy (T4+T3) has been promoted, and some patients demonstrate a compelling benefit. They can be identified by delayed relaxation of tendon reflexes, that is, a positive Woltman's sign. This is specific for T3 responders. A generation of Endocrinologists has neglected this useful clinical sign. Patients with autoimmune symptoms and elevated anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies show

The reported incidence rate of primary congenital hypothyroidism (CH) has been increasing in the United States over the past 2 decades. We have considered the possibility that the inclusion of cases of transient hypothyroidism has inflated the reported incidence rate of CH. Assessing the effects of cases of transient hypothyroidism on the incidence rate is problematic, because the definitions, diagnostic criteria, and differentiation from transient hyperthyrotropinemia vary widely among state newborn screening programs. Among the 4 etiologies for transient hypothyroidism (maternal thyrotropin

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Decompensated hypothyroidism (DH) is a rare endocrine emergency with a high mortality rate, particularly challenging to distinguish from hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in patients with cirrhosis due to overlapping symptoms.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 79-year-old woman with advanced cirrhosis and a history of multiple HE-related admissions, who exhibited altered mental status, hypothermia, bradycardia, and unusually high blood pressure. Laboratory findings revealed a severely elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone level (335.10 µUI/mL; reference range, 0.40-4.50 µUI/m

This study investigates the intricate relationship between neuroinflammation and adult-onset hypothyroidism, exploring the potential therapeutic role of chrysin, a flavonoid known for its beneficial effects on neuroinflammatory modulation. Hypothyroidism was induced in female C57BL/6 mice using a 0.1 % methimazole (MTZ) treatment in drinking water for 31 days. After confirming reduced thyroid hormone levels, mice received either a vehicle or chrysin (20 mg/kg) via intragastric delivery once daily for 28 consecutive days. Brain samples from the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were collected f

BACKGROUND: Few population-based studies report the changes with time in thyroid function tests in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism. We compared the risk for developing overt hypothyroidism in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism and euthyroid controls from the same population of elderly Japanese. We also sought associations of selected parameters with the development of overt hypothyroidism in the subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid groups.
METHODS: We measured thyrotropin (TSH) and free thyroxine (T4) levels at baseline examinations performed from 2000 to 2003 in the cohort of

Acquired hypothyroidism is generally also referred to as juvenile hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is due to the deficient secretion of thyroid hormones causing metabolic and neurological sequelae at the cellular level. It can present as overt hypothyroidism wherein the thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) secretion fall and thyrotropin (TSH) rises. Acquired hypothyroidism frequently presents between 9 and 11 y of age and is rarely seen before 4 y of age. Approximately 80% of the children and adolescents are asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Children with moderate to severe hypothyroidism often pre

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is the most frequent neonatal endocrine disorder. CH is due to thyroid development or thyroid function defects (primary) or may be of hypothalamic-pituitary origin (central). Primary CH is caused essentially by abnormal thyroid gland morphogenesis (thyroid dysgenesis, TD) or defective thyroid hormone synthesis (dyshormonogenesis, DH). DH accounts for about 35% of CH and a genetic cause is identified in 50% of patients. However, TD accounts for about 65% of CH, and a genetic cause is identified in less than 5% of patients. The pathogenesis of CH is largely unknown

BACKGROUND: According to Statistics Poland (GUS, 2021), 15.8% of women and 2.5% of men suffer from thyroid disease. Although pharmacotherapy is the primary treatment, there is evidence that some vitamins and minerals can alleviate the symptoms of thyroid disease. A well-balanced and varied diet should cover the individual demand for energy and all necessary nutrients. However, dietary supplements are prevalent in Poland. This study aims to evaluate the frequency and reasons behind dietary supplementation in patients with hypothyroid diseases.
METHODS: 232 volunteers (203 women and 29 men) fro

Thyroid dysfunction is a common incidental finding among healthy individuals. It can affect various organs of the body, including the heart. Among many other heart complications, it can lead to pericardial effusion by causing increased permeability of albumin across the pericardial membrane that leads to exudative pericardial effusion. In hypothyroidism, the fluid collection process occurs over a period of months, giving enough time for the pericardial membrane to stretch and accommodate the fluid within itself without causing any symptoms. Eventually, the pericardial membrane stretches to its

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review summarizes recent advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with congenital hypothyroidism.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although most newborn screening strategies are designed to detect severe primary hypothyroidism that presents shortly after birth, some infants display a pattern of delayed TSH rise despite normal initial newborn screening. Recent studies suggest that delayed TSH rise may be more common and more severe than previously recognized. Although much less common than primary hypothyroidism, central congenital hypothyroidism is as likely to be o

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Congenital hypothyroidism is a common worldwide condition. Due in part to increasingly widespread newborn screening, the number of patients with this diagnosis is increasing. In this review, we discuss currently available imaging techniques and the benefits and limitations of these techniques in evaluating congenital hypothyroidism.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work has demonstrated an increasing diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism with normally located glands and mildly decreased thyroid function. Increasingly more genetic abnormalities have been recognized in the hormone sy

IMPORTANCE: Subclinical hypothyroidism, defined as an elevated serum thyrotropin (often referred to as thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH) level with normal levels of free thyroxine (FT4) affects up to 10% of the adult population.
OBSERVATIONS: Subclinical hypothyroidism is most often caused by autoimmune (Hashimoto) thyroiditis. However, serum thyrotropin levels rise as people without thyroid disease age; serum thyrotropin concentrations may surpass the upper limit of the traditional reference range of 4 to 5 mU/L among elderly patients. This phenomenon has likely led to an overestimation o

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of latent/subclinical hypothyroidism is between 3% and 10%, according to epidemiologic studies that have been carried out in the USA, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. As persons with latent hypo - thyroidism are often asymptomatic, the diagnosis is often made incidentally in routine laboratory testing.
METHODS: This review is based on a selective search in PubMed for publications on the diagnosis and treatment of latent hypothyroidism. All pertinent articles and guidelines published from 1 January 2000 to 31 July 2016 were included.
RESULTS: The diagnosis of latent

Thyroid disorders have been found to be associated with multiple organ systems and thus have a broad spectrum of presenting symptoms and clinical conditions. Certain aspects of the gastrointestinal (GI) system have yet to be fully understood and documented. Hypothyroidism and even hyperthyroidism have been identified in patients with motility symptoms involving the GI tract. These symptoms can vary and can be a complication of undertreated or undiagnosed condition involving the thyroid. Unfortunately, the mechanism in which these hormones can impact intestinal motility remains poorly understoo

Polymyositis-like syndrome in hypothyroidism is a rare condition characterised by proximal muscle weakness and elevated muscle enzymes. Patients with this condition can initially be misdiagnosed as having polymyositis due to similar characteristics of both diseases; however a response to thyroxine is the main differentiating feature. This report highlights the case of a 30-year-old male who had severe myalgia and proximal muscle weakness. In addition to raised creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) levels, his biochemical profile showed hypothyroidism. Initially thought to be suffering from polymyosit
