Distinct transmission cycles of Leishmania tropica in 2 adjacent foci, Northern Israel.

Transmission of Leishmania tropica was studied in 2 adjacent foci in Israel where vector populations differ. Only Phlebotomus sergenti was found infected with L. tropica in the southern focus; P. arabicus was the main vector in the northern focus. Rock hyraxes (Procavia capensis) were incriminated as reservoir hosts in both foci. L. tropica strains from the northern focus isolated from sand flies, cutaneous leishmaniasis cases, and rock hyraxes were antigenically similar to L. major, and strains from the southern focus were typically L. tropica. Laboratory studies showed that P. arabicus is a

Feeding behavior and activity of Phlebotomus pedifer and potential reservoir hosts of Leishmania aethiopica in southwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a major public health concern in Ethiopia. However, knowledge about the complex zoonotic transmission cycle is limited, hampering implementation of control strategies. We explored the feeding behavior and activity of the vector (Phlebotomus pedifer) and studied the role of livestock in CL transmission in southwestern Ethiopia. METHODS: Blood meal origins of engorged sand flies were determined by sequencing host DNA. A host choice experiment was performed to assess the feeding preference of P. pedifer when humans and hyraxes are equally accessible. E

Ecology and seasonality of sandflies and potential reservoirs of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ochollo, a hotspot in southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ochollo is a village in southern Ethiopia burdened with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), where Phlebotomus pedifer is the only vector for Leishmania aethiopica and hyraxes are confirmed reservoir hosts. A detailed description of the different players of transmission, and the ecology and seasonality of the vector needs to be established in order to accomplish efficient control programs. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Between March 2017 and February 2018, a monthly sandfly collection was carried out in different habitats and records of temperature and humidity were taken. Rodents and hyraxes we

Comparative biomechanical analysis of three rapid maxillary expanders in BCLP patients: A three-dimensional finite element study.

Maxillary expansion in bilateral complete cleft lip and palate (BCLP) poses unique biomechanical challenges due to disrupted anatomy and scarred sutures. This finite element study compared three expander types-conventional Hyrax, pre-positioned Hyrax, and fan-shaped-in a patient-specific BCLP model derived from CBCT data. We evaluated 3D dentoalveolar displacement, craniofacial suture strain, and periodontal ligament (PDL) stress. The fan-shaped expander achieved greater anterior expansion and vertical control but induced higher von Mises stress and buccal tipping, raising concerns over period

Ecology of Leishmaniasis in an urbanized landscape: Relationship of sand fly densities, and Leishmania tropica infection rates with reservoir host colonies.

Urbanization may influence the transmission of leishmaniasis, which is as a serious public health issue in Palestine. Semi urban environments can provide suitable habitats for the reservoir host species and the vector sand flies to create favorable condition for disease transmission. This study was aimed to evaluating the effect of distance from hyrax (reservoir host) colonies on sand fly (vector) abundance and its relationship to Leishmania infection within a semi urban landscape. In the Aleskan neighborhood the town of Tubas, sand flies were collected in July and September of 2016. Five trap

Does expander design influence the risk of asymmetric palatal expansion? A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned asymmetric palatal expansion following Surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion (SARME) can result in a poor esthetic outcome or an unstable occlusion. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between expander design and asymmetric expansion. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, preoperative and postoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of patients treated with SARME were randomly selected from the Radboud University medical imaging database. Patients were divided into two groups according to the used expander: (1) bone-borne d

Dental eruption in afrotherian mammals.

BACKGROUND: Afrotheria comprises a newly recognized clade of mammals with strong molecular evidence for its monophyly. In contrast, morphological data uniting its diverse constituents, including elephants, sea cows, hyraxes, aardvarks, sengis, tenrecs and golden moles, have been difficult to identify. Here, we suggest relatively late eruption of the permanent dentition as a shared characteristic of afrotherian mammals. This characteristic and other features (such as vertebral anomalies and testicondy) recall the phenotype of a human genetic pathology (cleidocranial dysplasia), correlations wit

Maxillary deficiency treatment by fixed tongue appliance--a case report.

This case illustrates orthopaedic treatment of a 12.1-year-old girl with class III malocclusion and maxillary deficiency. The patient was treated by a fixed tongue appliance in the upper jaw. First maxillary molars and premolars were banded and a hyrax was mounted on them in order to achieve lateral expansion. A fixed tongue appliance comprising of a few cribs was soldered to the anterior side of the hyrax with the purpose of pushing the maxilla in forward position. The orthopaedic stage of treatment lasted for 5 months after which favourable correction of the malocclusion was observed. The SN

A reproducible and repeatable digital method for quantifying nasal and sinus airway changes following suture palatine expansion.

PURPOSE: The airway complex is modified by palatine expansion. Computer tomography has been used in the past to determine the change in volume, but there was a lack of a specific, reproducible method for this purpose. The present study sought to determine the accuracy, reproducibility, and repeatability of an innovative digital measurement technique for analyzing the volume of maxillary and nasal sinus airways following suture palatine expansion performed with the Hyrax disyuntor appliance. METHODS: Patients underwent preoperative and postoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans.

Effects of food processing on masticatory strain and craniofacial growth in a retrognathic face.

Changes in the technology of food preparation over the last few thousand years (especially cooking, softening, and grinding) are hypothesized to have contributed to smaller facial size in humans because of less growth in response to strains generated by chewing softer, more processed food. While there is considerable comparative evidence to support this idea, most experimental tests of this hypothesis have been on non-human primates or other very prognathic mammals (rodents, swine) raised on hard versus very soft (nearly liquid) diets. Here, we examine facial growth and in vivo strains generat
