Occurrence of integrons and antibiotic resistance genes in cryoconite and ice of Svalbard, Greenland, and the Caucasus glaciers.

The prevalence of integrons and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a serious threat for public health in the new millennium. Although commonly detected in sites affected by strong anthropogenic pressure, in remote areas their occurrence, dissemination, and transfer to other ecosystems is poorly recognized. Remote sites are considered as a benchmark for human-induced contamination on Earth. For years glaciers were considered pristine, now they are regarded as reservoirs of contaminants, thus studies on contamination of glaciers, which may be released to other ecosystems, are highly needed. Spatial pattern and methylation process of mercury enrichment in lake sediments during glacial periods in cold and arid regions.

Underlying surface in lake watersheds and mercury concentrations in lake inflows are key factors affecting the accumulation of mercury in lake sediments. Lake characteristics play a crucial role in the process of mercury methylation in sediments. Lakes in cold regions have unique environmental features, including a long ice-cover period, during which mercury undergoes complex physicochemical processes. However, the extent of mercury accumulation and methylation in cold region lake sediments remains unclear. We studied the concentrations, pollution levels, and ecological risks of mercury and me

Distribution of sedimentary mercury off Svalbard, European Arctic.

The European Arctic, including the Svalbard archipelago, receives mercury loads due to long range atmospheric transport, local contamination, melting of glaciers and as a result of bedrock weathering. Few studies have been devoted to the contamination history and sources of sedimentary mercury in the Svalbard area. This knowledge gap is addressed in this study. Concentrations of total mercury (10-80ng/g), fractions of mercury differing with affinity to the sediment matrix (88-97% refractory, 3-12% mobile), organic and methyl mercury (100-500pg/g) were measured in surface and subsurface sedimen

Ice-core based assessment of historical anthropogenic heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Sb, Zn) emissions in the Soviet Union.

The development of strategies and policies aiming at the reduction of environmental exposure to air pollution requires the assessment of historical emissions. Although anthropogenic emissions from the extended territory of the Soviet Union (SU) considerably influenced concentrations of heavy metals in the Northern Hemisphere, Pb is the only metal with long-term historical emission estimates for this region available, whereas for selected other metals only single values exist. Here we present the first study assessing long-term Cd, Cu, Sb, and Zn emissions in the SU during the period 1935-1991

Viral genetic diversity and functional potential in polar and subarctic sea ice.

Sea ice plays a critical role in regulating the global climate and serves as a unique habitat for diverse microbial communities. Still, our understanding of viruses in these communities remains limited. To further uncover the diversity and functional potential of viruses in polar and subarctic sea ice, we explored the viral component of Arctic, Baltic Sea, and Antarctic sea ice metagenomes. Altogether, 550 viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) were recovered, most of which were putatively classified within the class Caudoviricetes, which comprises bacterial and archaeal tailed double-stran

Multiyear tropical warm pool warming drives slowdown in Antarctic mass loss.

Antarctic mass loss has been a major contributor to global sea-level rise for most of the last few decades, mainly driven by West Antarctica1. During 2021-2023, however, a sharp increase in surface mass balance over Queen Mary Land and Wilkes Land in East Antarctica offset West Antarctic loss and slowed the rate of total ice mass loss2,3. Although this slowdown is consistent with the expected long-term precipitation response to global warming through poleward-shifted storm tracks and Antarctic moistening4, our results point to a different mechanism. Here we show that the recent ice mass gain w

Tracing emerging contaminants in the Arctic cryosphere: Insights from Spitsbergen (Svalbard Archipelago).

The Arctic cryosphere, recognised as a reservoir for pollutants, faces the risk of becoming a secondary source of pollution due to climate-driven thawing and glacial melt. This study presents new data on concentrations and deposition fluxes of contaminants of emerging Arctic concern, specifically phenolic endocrine-disrupting compounds (PEDCs, e.g. bisphenol A and nonylphenols) and 17 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs, including antibiotics, analgesics, hormones, and insect repellents). The samples were collected from snow and shallow ice cores from three glaciers in Svalbard d

Dissemination of genes associated with antibiotic resistance and bacterial virulence during ecosystem succession in two Tibetan glacier forefields.

The release of pathogens and DNA from the cryosphere (glacier, permafrost, and, sea ice) has become a new threat to society and environment. Due to enhanced glacier retreat, the size of glacier forefields has greatly expanded. Herein, we used a combination of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic methods and adopted a sequence-based approach to investigate the distribution and changing patterns of virulence factor genes (VFGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in two glacier forefields. The forefields are separated by approximately 400 km located in the center and north of the Tibetan Platea

Climate change impacts on ocean light in Arctic ecosystems.

Climate change is causing major sea ice losses, leading to increased light availability across polar marine ecosystems, however the consequences are largely unknown. We quantify how future conditions for sea ice and snow, storm-driven waves, clouds, ozone, air and ocean temperature, and chlorophyll-a will affect seasonal absorption and reflection of light in Arctic seas, alongside growth and survival of fish. Using four CMIP6 model inputs and a spectral radiative transfer model, we predict a 75-160% increase in visible light by 2100 in the Northern Bering, Chukchi, and Barents Seas. We predict

Single-cell imaging reveals efficient nutrient uptake and growth of microalgae darkening the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Blooms of dark pigmented microalgae accelerate glacier and ice sheet melting by reducing the surface albedo. However, the role of nutrient availability in regulating algal growth on the ice remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate glacier ice algae on the Greenland Ice Sheet, providing single-cell measurements of carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) ratios and assimilation rates of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium and nitrate following nutrient amendments. The single-cell analyses reveal high C:N and C:P atomic ratios in algal biomass as well as intracellular P storage. DIC assi

Cycles of trans-Arctic dispersal and vicariance, and diversification of the amphi-boreal marine fauna.

The amphi-boreal faunal element comprises closely related species and conspecific populations with vicarious distributions in the North Atlantic and North Pacific basins. It originated from an initial trans-Arctic dispersal in the Pliocene after the first opening of the Bering Strait, and subsequent inter-oceanic vicariance through the Pleistocene when the passage through the Arctic was severed by glaciations and low sea levels. Opportunities for further trans-Arctic dispersal have risen at times, however, and molecular data now expose more complex patterns of inter-oceanic affinities and disp

Ozone-climate interactions and effects on solar ultraviolet radiation.

This report assesses the effects of stratospheric ozone depletion and anticipated ozone recovery on the intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation at the Earth's surface. Interactions between changes in ozone and changes in climate, as well as their effects on UV radiation, are also considered. These evaluations focus mainly on new knowledge gained from research conducted during the last four years. Furthermore, drivers of changes in UV radiation other than ozone are discussed and their relative importance is assessed. The most important of these factors, namely clouds, aerosols and surface refle

Shallow methylmercury production in the marginal sea ice zone of the central Arctic Ocean.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic compound that threatens wildlife and human health across the Arctic region. Though much is known about the source and dynamics of its inorganic mercury (Hg) precursor, the exact origin of the high MeHg concentrations in Arctic biota remains uncertain. Arctic coastal sediments, coastal marine waters and surface snow are known sites for MeHg production. Observations on marine Hg dynamics, however, have been restricted to the Canadian Archipelago and the Beaufort Sea (<79 °N). Here we present the first central Arctic Ocean (79-90 °N) profiles for total mercury

Comprehensive analysis of greenhouse gases emissions and microbial dynamics in glacier-fed lakes across various ablation stages.

Glacier melting, a direct consequence of global climate change, significantly influences lake ecosystem structures and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission in the glacier-fed lake. As glaciers release substantial meltwater containing nitrogen and carbon into lakes, microbial communities and their GHGs emissions could also evolve accordingly. So far, studies on seasonal and diel GHGs emission characteristics and their driving mechanism at high-altitude (> 5000 m) glacier-fed lakes remains relatively constrained. This study has focused on the Lhasa Valley Glacier, a typical continental-type glacier

Integrating multisource data and machine learning for supraglacial lake detection: Implications for environmental management and sustainable development goals in high mountainous regions.

The accurate detection and monitoring of supraglacial lakes in high mountainous regions are crucial for understanding their dynamic nature and implications for environmental management and sustainable development goals. In this study, we propose a novel approach that integrates multisource data and machine learning techniques for supra-glacial lake detection in the Passu Batura glacier of the Hunza Basin, Pakistan. We extract pertinent features or parameters by leveraging multisource datasets such as radar backscatter intensity VH and VV parameters from Sentinel-1 Ground Range Detected (GRD) d

Paradoxical escape responses by narwhals (Monodon monoceros).

Until recent declines in Arctic sea ice levels, narwhals (Monodon monoceros) have lived in relative isolation from human perturbation and sustained predation pressures. The resulting naïvety has made this cryptic, deep-diving cetacean highly susceptible to disturbance, although quantifiable effects have been lacking. We deployed a submersible, animal-borne electrocardiograph-accelerometer-depth recorder to monitor physiological and behavioral responses of East Greenland narwhals after release from net entanglement and stranding. Escaping narwhals displayed a paradoxical cardiovascular down-reg

A Submersible, Off-Axis Holographic Microscope for Detection of Microbial Motility and Morphology in Aqueous and Icy Environments.

Sea ice is an analog environment for several of astrobiology's near-term targets: Mars, Europa, Enceladus, and perhaps other Jovian or Saturnian moons. Microorganisms, both eukaryotic and prokaryotic, remain active within brine channels inside the ice, making it unnecessary to penetrate through to liquid water below in order to detect life. We have developed a submersible digital holographic microscope (DHM) that is capable of resolving individual bacterial cells, and demonstrated its utility for immediately imaging samples taken directly from sea ice at several locations near Nuuk, Greenland.

Purification and biochemical characterization of a cold-active lipase from Antarctic sea ice bacteria Pseudoalteromonas sp. NJ 70.

An extracellular cold-active lipase from Antarctic sea ice bacteria Pseudoalteromonas sp. NJ 70 was purified and characterized. The overall purification based on lipase activity was 27.5-fold with a yield of 25.4 %. The purified lipase showed as a single band on SDS-PAGE with an apparent molecular weight of 37 kDa. The optimum temperature and pH were 35 °C and 7.0, respectively. The lipase activity was enhanced by Ca(2+) and Mg(2+), while was partially inhibited by other metals such as Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Ba(2+), Pb(2+), Fe(2+) and Mn(2+). The lipase had high tolerance to a wide range of NaCl conc

Dynamics of microbial communities succession in freeze-thaw soils of the Yangbark Glacier, Muztagh Ata.

The freezing and melting of glaciers cause significant changes in environmental and ecological conditions, while microbial community succession reflects the direction and pace of ecosystem transformation. To investigate the ecological functions and adaptation mechanisms of microbial communities in glacial melt zones under extreme conditions, sampling points were established along the Yangbark Glacier, Muztagh Ata. The community succession of soil microorganisms was analyzed by using Illumina NovaSeq technology. A total of 46 phyla, 760 genera, and 371 bacterial species, along with 12 phyla, 24

Bacterial community characterization of Batura Glacier in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan.

High-altitude cold habitats of the Karakoram are rarely explored for their bacterial community characterization and metabolite productions. In the present study, bacterial communities in ice, water, and sediments of Batura Glacier were investigated using culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. Twenty-seven cold-adapted bacterial strains (mostly psychrotrophic) were isolated using R2A, Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA), and Luria-Bertani (LB) media, at 4 °C and 15 °C. Most of the isolates exhibited growth at a wide range of temperature (4-35 °C), pH (5-12), and salinity (1-6%). Among the bacter
