[Effects of vertical banded gastroplasty on weight, quality of life and nutrition].

We examined the long term results of vertical banded gastroplasty 3-10 years after operation. They were assessed by weight lost, incidence and severity of untoward effects and improvement in diet and in quality of life in 75 of 122 who had had the operation. Average weight lost was 28.5 +/- 14.9 kg (p < 0.001) in 5 years and 58.6 +/- 30.4% of excess weight, which brought patients to within 32 +/- 25.2% of ideal weight. According to these measures, in 63-76% the operation had been successful in causing weight loss. The 2 criteria for successful weight loss were loss of more than 50% of weight i

Classification of nutritional status in cystic fibrosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nutritional status impacts on the progression of cystic fibrosis. Current guidelines recommend the use of anthropometric indicators to classify nutritional status and identify malnutrition. However, the current nutrition-classification systems are problematic. I summarize these problems and review recent progress in the development of evidence-based anthropometric criteria for classifying nutritional status in cystic fibrosis patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Percentage of ideal body weight as a malnutrition index is flawed. In children with cystic fibrosis, this index underestima

Body-image disturbances in bulimia nervosa: influences of actual body size.

This study evaluated body-image distortion and ideal body-size preferences in 423 nonbulimic women and 108 bulimics. Analyses of covariance were utilized to compare the bulimic and nonbulimic groups on measures of current and ideal body size. Weight was used as a covariate to evaluate the influence of actual body size on perception of current body size and selection of ideal body size. Bulimics chose current body sizes that were significantly larger than those picked by nonbulimics regardless of actual body size. Bulimics also chose thinner ideal body sizes than did nonbulimics, regardless of

A new way to determine correct depth of central venous catheter insertion using a real-time ultrasound-guided insertion technique in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Several formulae or methods are reported to predict the ideal central venous catheter insertion depth. However, they are complicated and often unsuitable in cases requiring rapid management. AIMS: This study aimed to determine a simple and practical method to predict the ideal central venous catheter insertion depth after the real-time ultrasound-guided right internal jugular vein, or left or right supraclavicular approach in pediatric patients. METHOD: Pediatric patients with congenital heart diseases who underwent cardiovascular surgery between July 2015 and February 2018 in th

Raised serum TSH in morbid-obese and non-obese patients: effect on the circulating lipid profile.

Morbid obesity is associated with a high rate of raised serum TSH associated with normal free thyroid hormones. The body repercussions of this thyroid abnormality, suggesting subclinical hypothyroidism, are still debated. In particular, it is unclear whether the raised serum TSH of obesity results in changes of circulating lipids typically observed in hypothyroidism. Aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a raised serum TSH on the lipid profile in morbid-obese and non-obese patients. Serum TSH, FT4, FT3, Tg-Ab, TPO-Ab and lipids were measured in 55 morbid-obese (BMI > 40 kg/m(2)) and

"Having a non-normative body for me is about survival": Androgynous body ideal among trans and nonbinary individuals.

The present study focused on trans and nonbinary (TNB) individuals who have an androgynous or non-stereotypical body ideal, with attention to how their body ideal is conceptualized and maintained. Data were collected online from 76 TNB individuals. Based on responses to two open-ended prompts, a two-tiered analysis was conducted. First, thematic analysis was used to develop four central themes describing the way TNB individuals conceptualized their androgynous body ideal: 1) Attaining Neutrality and De-Categorizing Gender; 2) Disaggregating Gender Expression; 3) Managing Gender Dysphoria; and

Pharmacokinetic analysis of anti-hemophilic factor in the obese patient.

Standard dosing for individuals with hemophilia A is based on body weight such that 50 IU kg(-1) is defined as a 100% dose, or one attaining 1.00 IU mL(-1) factor VIII (FVIII) clotting activity. No guidelines exist, however, for individuals with hemophilia who are obese, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30, who may actually be 'over'-treated based on higher in vivo recovery based on higher weight. Alternative treatment guidelines are needed for such patients. To determine FVIII pharmacokinetics we retrospectively collected data during ideal-body-weight dosing from six obese (BMI ≥ 30) hemophilia A pati

Impact of obesity on ventricular size and function in children, adolescents and adults with Tetralogy of Fallot after initial repair.

Obesity is epidemic in congenital heart disease, with reported rates of 16% to 26% in children and 54% in adults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of obesity on ventricular function and size in patients after initial repair for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Cardiac magnetic resonance studies in normal-weight (body mass index percentile <85th) and obese (body mass index percentile ≥95th) children and adults with repaired tetralogy of Fallot were reviewed. The left ventricular ejection fraction, the right ventricular ejection fraction, left and right ventricular end-diastolic volume

Therapist adherence to family-based treatment for adolescents with anorexia nervosa: A multi-site exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study is the first to examine family-based treatment (FBT) adherence and association to treatment outcome in the context of a large-scale, multi-centre study for the treatment of adolescents with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: One hundred and ninety recorded FBT sessions from 68 adolescents with anorexia nervosa and their families were recruited across multiple sites (N = 6). Each site provided 1-4 tapes per family over four treatment time points, and each was independently rated for therapist adherence. RESULTS: There were differences in adherence scores within and be

[Correction of severe malnutrition by cyclic enteral feeding].

This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of cyclic (nocturnal) enteral nutrition in ambulatory malnourished patients. A ternary polymeric diet was administered to a total of 28 women and 23 men (mean age: 58 years) for a nocturnal period of 12-14 hours during 24.5 +/- 1.1 days. This diet provided an average of 28.3 +/- 0.6 kcal/kg ideal body weight/day. The nutritional program was administered as planned and well tolerated in 50 of the 51 patients. Voluntary oral caloric intake improved significantly during the treatment period (18.2 +/- 1.4 kcal/kg ideal body weight/day

Indexing of Left Atrial Volume by various body size parameters in the Indian non-obese normal subjects: Is there an incremental value ?

BACKGROUND: Left atrial (LA) volume indexing for body surface area (BSA) is the common practice. Since LA volume index is of cardiovascular pathophysiologic significance, it is suggested that indexing for other body size parameters be explored to evaluate a more appropriate alternative method. The aims of this study were to find normal and the best cutoff values for LA volume indexed for multiple body size parameters in normal Indian subjects. METHODS: Data from the multicentric prospective INDEA study conducted through 2018 to 2020 was reviewed and subjects without known cardiac disease and

Body Image Perception, Weight Status and Health Behaviours Among African Immigrant Women Living in Italy: A Cross-Sectional Comparative Study.

Background/Objectives: Body image is influenced by body weight, sociocultural norms, and weight-related behaviours. Migration has been associated with changes in body ideals, potentially through acculturation processes. This study investigated body image perception, weight status, and related behavioural and psychological factors among a group of African immigrant women living in Italy, comparing them with an Italian comparison group. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 131 women (60 African immigrants; 71 Italians). Body image perception was assessed using the Thompson and Gray silho

Motivational processes contributing to disturbances in women's body image and eating.

Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) provides a neurobiological personality framework for understanding approach and avoidance behavioural patterns. Recent research suggests an association between RST personality traits (reward interest and behavioural inhibition system [BIS]) and women's body image and eating behaviours. The current study aimed to extend this research by testing for indirect relationships between reward interest and BIS and eating disorder symptoms, as mediated through thin ideal internalisation. Adult female participants (N = 354, M = 22.06 years of age, SD = 6.78) complet

Obese Children Have Different Forearm Fracture Characteristics Compared With Normal-weight Children.

BACKGROUND: Current estimates suggest that one third of children and adolescents are overweight and 1 in 5 are obese. Obese children are at increased risk of sustaining more complex fractures, failing nonoperative treatment, and experiencing more complications during treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare forearm fracture characteristics, treatment, and complications in grouped overweight and obese [OW+OB; body mass index-for-age percentile (BMI%) ≥85] pediatric patients compared with normal-weight (NW; BMI%≤84) patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective comparative study of pat

The association between body mass index and gastroesophageal reflux disease in the World Trade Center Health Program General Responder Cohort.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing concern about the obesity epidemic in the United States. Obesity is a potential risk factor for a number of chronic diseases, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This analysis examined whether body mass index (BMI) was associated with physician-diagnosed GERD in World Trade Center (WTC) general responders. METHODS: 19,819 WTC general responders were included in the study. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to compare time to GERD diagnosis among three BMI groups (normal (<25 kg/m(2) ), overweight (≥25 and <30 kg/m(2) ), and obese

Testing general sociocultural and coach-related appearance pressures as the factors associated with disordered eating in competitive female athletes participating in various sports.

The aim of the present study was to test the sociocultural Petrie and Greenleaf's (2007) model of disordered eating (DE) in competitive female athletes. Specifically, we tested a model of general sociocultural and coach-related pressures towards body weight and appearance of female athletes as the factors associated with athletes' DE through the mediators such as internalization of appearance ideals and overweight preoccupation. 515 athletes participated in this study. The mean age of the sample was 19.0 ± 5.9 years. Athletes were provided with study measures on general sociocultural and coach

Leptin gene polymorphisms are associated with weight gain during lithium augmentation in patients with major depression.

Weight gain is a common adverse effect of lithium augmentation. Previous studies indicate an impact of genetic variants at the leptin gene on weight gain as a consequence of psychopharmacological treatment. The primary aim of our study was to identify variants at the leptin locus that might predict lithium-induced weight gain. The secondary aim was to investigate if these variants modulate leptin levels. In 180 patients with acute major depressive disorder, body mass index was measured before and after 4 weeks of lithium augmentation, in a subsample also after 4 and/or 7 months. In a subsample
